Course Overview Small paintings are ideal to give as Christmas presents or to have printed as Greeting cards in time for Christmas. We will paint a variety of subjects with plenty of choice from photographs that John will bring, or you may prefer to bring your own. Course Description Winter landscapes, snow, boats, winter flowers, birds and animals, for example. The course will start with a demonstration on Friday evening to show you oil painting techniques and give you some ideas. Each day will have short demonstrations to show you ideas for how to paint various subjects. Expect to paint several pictures on a fun and productive weekend

2 S m a l l O i l P a i n t i n g s f o r C h r i s t m a s About the Tutor John Shave, previously based in Australia, is English born and now lives in England and paints throughout the English countryside and abroad. His individual style reflects the more simplistic and impressionistic styles of artists such as Seago and Wesson and especially Constable s oil sketches and more recently influenced by the work of the Australian impressionists, Sorocca and John Singer Sargent. His paintings of portraits, life studies, still life and landscapes in oils, watercolour and charcoal have been sold privately and at numerous exhibitions in both England and Australia. He is an active member and Fellow of the Royal Art Society of South Australia and the Adelaide Art Society. He s also a member of the Wapping Group and exhibits at the Mall Gallery and other London art galleries. John has been visiting Flatford Mill for many years now and, as in previous years, this should prove an enjoyable and exciting experience for students and tutor alike. What to Bring PLEASE BRING AT LEAST 8 SMALL CANVAS OR CANVAS BOARDS ABOUT 6 by 8 inches or 10 by 8 inchesfor PAINTING: Please bring your usual equipment and enough spares to last for the length of the course. If you are unsure what to bring, the following list is suggested: linseed stand oil and gum turpentine (also available from the tutor) course tutor - try to include soft hair (mongoose) as well as hoghair; flat, round and rigger will be useful trowel/raked type

Start and finish times Check in is from 1600, but the first formal activity is dinner at 1900 (with the bar open from 1845!)followed by an evening session Residents: Please aim to arrive between 1600 and 1800 on the Friday to allow us sufficient time to show you to your accommodation and around the communal areas. Non-residents: You do not need to arrive quite so early but please can you be here by 1800 as we need to show you the communal areas as well. The course ends at 1600 on Sunday.
