2 KINDERGARTEN Junior Jellyfish Jellyfish are remarkable creatures. Did you know that jellyfish don t have brains? Some jellyfish don t have tentacles, while others look like trash bags. Some jellyfish can even glow in the dark and eat peanut butter! These amazing ocean-dwellers were the theme for our first kindergarten project. Averie Patrick A verie Patrick is our featured kindergarten artist this quarter. Isn t her jellyfish painting wonderful? Averie used a warm color scheme to paint it with watercolors. This means she used red, pink, orange, and yellow to unify her painting. Notice too how she cut the tentacles and rolled them up to make them look 3-D! Averie s smiling jellyfish brightens my day and I hope it brightens your day too!

3 GRADE 1 Flower Power C ompare these two awesome paintings. One is done by a professional artist named Debra Hurd. The other is by Applewood first-grader Christian Warner! How are the two flower vases similar? How are they different? What about the flowers? What about the style? How about the background? Christian used warm colors in his background while Debra used mostly cool colors. Christian chose to use repetition in the color and shape of his flowers, while Debra varied the color of her tulips. Christian chose to center his composition while Ms. Hurd aligned her composition to the left. Christian Warner Artists can learn a lot from each other. Students can compare their work with that of other artists and incorporate facets of others work that they admire while putting their own creative flare on their work. We are all wired differently and therefore our artwork is all unique. Debra Hurd

4 GRADE 2 Precious Pumpkins Avery Plesec A very Plesec is the artist who painted the fantastic pumpkin watercolor above! Don t Avery s pumpkins look like they are spherical? She accomplished this by using curved lines and different values of orange. Check out her background notice how she created contrast by using a solid dark bottom half and a patterned light top half. Her spectacular pumpkin painting really gets me in the mood for fall! I hope it does the same for you!

5 GRADE 3 Northern Lights Out of Sight! Did you know that the Northern Lights are visible from space? Jaelynn Scullen H ave you ever seen the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis? You may have if you ve travelled to Alaska, Canada, Finland, Sweden, or Iceland. This is a magical natural phenomenon of streaming lights that appears near the northern and southern magnetic poles. Applewood third-grader Jaelynn Scullen did a marvelous job of capturing this breathtaking wonder. She used paint for the night sky, stars and silhouetted trees and chalk pastels for the streaking, colorful northern lights. The result beauty!

6 GRADE 4 Edvard Munch Scream for Svana! U sing her own creative twist, Svana Johnson did a marvelous job of recreating Norwegian artist Edvard Munch s iconic painting The Scream. Doesn t she look scared? Interestingly, Munch made four different versions of The Scream, two pastels and two paintings. One of the most recognized paintings in all of art history, it has come to represent man s anxiety and I am anxious for more of Svana s artwork! The Scream / Edvard Munch The Scream / Svana Johnson

7 Evi Talley GRADE 5 Regal Eagle E vi Talley, a fifth grader at Applewood, is the amazing artist who painted the eagle to the right. Texture is one of the seven key elements of art, and Evi skillfully created a feathered texture with her various brushstrokes. Notice how many different gray tones she mixed up and how they enhance her painting. Wow Evi! Did you know that there are around 60 different species of eagles? Eagles have keen eyesight and can spot their prey up to two miles away! Some eagles actually prey on monkeys and sloths.

8 ART SPOTLIGHT Shine Your Light Madeline Deiotte W e don t typically use lanterns a whole lot anymore we use flashlights or even our smart phones to light our path. Fifth grader Madeline Deiotte used a vintage lantern as the subject matter of her latest drawing. Remarkably, Madeline only used a black crayon to shade in her entire drawing! She used a variety of values. Value is how light or dark something is. Notice how she created dark shadows and light highlights. What kinds of unique objects do you have at home that would make for a great drawing?
