Comparative Study My Comparative study focuses on analyzing two different artists and a total of four pieces of work. The artists have similar and contrasting meaning, art movements, elements, and principles. I will be critiquing the use of form and color along with other elements and principles. The artists Cindy Milner and Odilon Redon have influenced my work. Cindy Milner is a local artist whom I ve met at Gallery Night in the Third Ward. Cindy Milner Odilon Redon Created by: Cheyenne Coad

Cindy Milner Milner often creates pieces including landscapes, portraits and still lifes. Most of the pieces are created by oil pastels. The people and places in the artworks are things that she has actually experienced during her travels. The many portraits of African Women and men are created to highlight what is currently happening in Congo, Sudan and Sierra Leone (Civil War in Angola). The civil war in Angola began in 1975 and ended in The war began when Angola became independent from Portugal. The war impacted many civilians. During Milner s travels she wanted to capture emotions and the impact the war had on communities and families. She wanted to shed light on a negative situation and express the hope that the people of Angola had. "Cindy Milner Artist." Cindy Milner Artist. N.p., n.d. Web. 23 Jan <

Odilon Redon Odilon s work is associated with the anti-materialistic and anti-rationalistic trend in art during the end of the 19th century. Over 100 works of Redon can be seen in the Museum of Modern Art. Odilon often creates pieces with dark visions and bizarre fantasies. He wanted to create mystery within his pieces. Redon started off making charcoal drawings and later expanded to different types of mediums. "Beyond the Visible: The Art of Odilon Redon, Studio International." 4 Artist Summary of artist Odilon Redon Rendon s work symbolizes his internal feelings and psyche. Many of his pieces include strange beings which are meant to represent the ghosts of his own mind. In 1870, Redon joined the army and served in the FrancoPrussian War. Odilon Redon became well known in 1884 when a novel by Joris-Karl Huysmans, A Rebours- featured Redon s drawings. "Littrature." 5 Similarities and Differences between Artist Overviews Cindy Milner Similarities Odilon Redon One way that Milner differs Both of the artists use Odilon Redon has the element from Redon is that she primarily oil pastels in all of of mystery within his piece. chooses to has clear and their pieces. Both Milner and Redon also wants his work to defined pieces. Her pieces are Redon started off with one inspire rather than be well also based off real people and career and didn t do well in defined. 6 Untitled 1 by Cindy Milner Untitled 1 by Cindy Milner is a piece that was created during her travels to Africa. The piece was created by using oil pastels. The piece is symmetrical and features a contrasting background with orange and purple focuses. By using the pastels, Milner gets a variation of values to create dimension which can be seen within the facial features such as the cheek and the nose- along with the headscarf. The artist also created movement in the piece- the headscarf is displayed in a way that frames the face and helps guide the audience s eyes to the subject in the piece. Cindy-Milner-Art. N.p., n.d. Web. 19 Apr

Untitled 2 by Cindy Milner Untitled 2 by Cindy Milner is a piece created by oil pastels. Milner uses symmetry and space to create a reflection of the sky onto the water. She also included contrast in her piece by adding the vibrant yellow color to the mellow blue and purple tones. The artist also uses movement within the piece through the yellow line in the water- guiding the audience s eyes across the piece as a whole. The piece includes unity because all of the lines she includes in the sky are also reflected within the water. Cindy-Milner-Art. N.p., n.d. Web. 19 Apr

Similarities Both of these pieces feature vibrant colors. Similarly both of the pieces have contrast within them. Another similarity is that both of these pieces were created by using oil pastels. Another similarity is that both of these are inspired by actual things that Milner experienced during her trip to Africa. Both of these pieces are very simple. 3 Untitled 2 by Cindy Milner This piece does not have a figure while Untitled 1 does. This artwork contains more cool colors when compared the the other piece. This piece is a majority of cool colors with hints of warm yellow to create contrast. Untitled 1 by Cindy Milner This piece focuses on a figure and has a simple background whereas Untitled 2 is only a background. The figure is this piece is purple tones which is a cool color but has hints on orange within the details.

Christ by Odilon Redon was created in The piece was created by using lithography. This piece is asymmetrical and the main focus of the piece is the right side where the figure of Christ is. Redon uses a variation of different values between black and white to give details to his piece. The piece has an emphasis on the eyes which are very detailed and give emotion. There is texture created in the piece which can be seen on the figures forehead, the crown of thorns, and the background. Jones, Victoria Emily. "Christ Crowned with Thorns interpreted by Symbolist artist Odilon Redon." Art & Theology. N.p., 14 Mar Web. 19 Apr Christ by Odilon Redon

Red Boat with Blue Sail by Odilon Redon Red Boat with Blue Sail by Odilon Redon is a piece created in 1907 by using Oil on Canvas. The piece has an emphasis on the boat and sail which is created by using brighter and more vibrant colors within those sections. The piece is balanced and symmetrical since the boat is centered in the painting. Movement is created in the painting which can be seen in the water since waves and dimension can be seen. Movement is also created within the sky by the clouds. By using different tones in the clouds it created texture. Red Boat with Blue Sail (160 Kb); Oil on canvas, 54 x 73 cm; Private collection

Similarities Both pieces feature some type of contrast within the colors and tones of the paintings. Untitled 1 by Cindy Milner has contrast between the colors used on the figure and the color in the background. Christ by Odilon Redon has contrast between the figure and the crown of thorns. Both uses of contrast draw emphasis to the figures. Untitled 1 by Cindy Milner This piece features vibrant tones.cindy Milner s piece is symmetrical whereas whereas Redon s piece it asymmetrical and off to the right side. The figure in this piece is making eye contact with the audience that views the piece. Overall, this piece looks happier due to the vibrant colors and the facial expression on the figures face. Christ by Odilon Redon This piece features different variations of tones between black and white. The figure in Redon s piece is tilting his head to the right while the figure in Milner s piece has her head straight forward. Christ in this piece is looking away and not making eye contact with the audience. Overall, the figure in this piece looks very distressed due to the grayscale of values and the emotion which can be seen through the eyes.

Similarities Both of the pieces feature both warm and cool colors. Another similarity between the two is that they are both symmetrical and have the main focus of the piece in the center. Movement is created in both pieces. In Milner s piece movement can be seen through the headscarf on the figure. Similarly, movement can be seen in Redon s piece through the water and clouds. Untitled 1 by Cindy Milner This artwork features more warm colors compared to Odilon s piece. This piece seems very happy due to the bright colors whereas the other piece has very muted tones and seems not as joyous. This piece also features more highlights and values to the figure whereas the piece by Odilon does not give as much dimension in the figure. Red Boat with Blue Sail by Odilon Redon This piece uses mostly cool colors besides the red boat. The boat is a bright red to draw emphasism to it. This piece uses space differently compared to Milner s work because it shows the background whereas Untitled 1 does not show a detailed background.

Similarities There aren t many similarities between the two pieces. One similarity is that they both use a variety of values and tones. Another similarity is that they have contrast within the pieces. Untitled 2 by Cindy Milner has contrast between the yellow and blue tones within the piece. Christ by Odilon Redon has contrast between the pale figure and the dark crown of thorns. Untitled 2 by Cindy Milner In comparison to Redon s piece, this one features very bright colors. This piece also gives off a different feeling to the audience. This piece contains more unity than Redon s piece. The piece is only a sky and water scene whereas Odilon s artwork is an asymmetrical figure and a background. Christ by Odilon Redon Christ by Odilon Redon does not include vibrant colors, it features different values between black and white. This piece gives off a very dramatic message whereas the piece by Milner is more simple and does not have a main focus within the piece.

Similarities Both of these pieces feature a water and sky scene. The pieces also both have water that reflects the sky, even though this is more evident in the piece by Milner it can still be seen in Redon s work. Untitled 2 by Cindy Milner This piece does not contain a figure and focuses more on the sky and its reflection within the water. This piece features colors that are more vibrant and gives off a peaceful feeling while Redon s piece gives a feeling of confusion and isolation. Red Boat with Blue Sail by Odilon Redon This piece features more muted tones compared to the piece by Cindy Milner. This piece also contains a figure whereas Milner s piece is only a water and sky scene. This piece has more defined clouds and waves while Untitled 2 has clouds that aren t as defined and the water reflects the clouds more.

Christ by Odilon Redon This piece features grayscale values. This piece has a plain background whereas Red Boat with Blue Sail has a detailed sky background and water scene. This piece gives a feeling of distress. Similarities Both of these pieces created by Redon feature muted tones. Both pieces have a contrast between the figure and the Red Boat with Blue Sail by Odilon Redon background. Christ features a This piece has vibrant colors on the pale figure surrounded by dark boat and muted colors within the toned thorns and a dark background. This piece also has a background. Red Boat with Blue horizon whereas Christ has no skyline, Sail has a Dark figure with a it is a close up of the figure. This muted toned background. Both artwork gives a feeling of confusion. pieces give a feeling of isolation.

Connections to Personal Art Both artists- Odilon Redon and Cindy Milner have influenced my art pieces throughout the year. The two artists have helped me explore different art mediums and techniques. I used a different medium that I haven t in the past, oil pastels. Both Milner and Redon have used oil pastels for a majority of their pieces which is differing from my own pieces. One piece that I chose to create was a girl with a rose.. I used common warm colors with a slight contrast of cool colors seen in Milners pieces I also incorporated a red rose. Both inspirational artists have influenced my pieces but I also have my own twist to the concepts since I chose to do close ups of the figures rather than having them off in the distance which is seen in Milners work.

Technique Comparison Redon creates abstract flower figures that aren t defined as clear as Milners work. I wanted to incorporate this aspect into my work. Having the clusters of flowers not clearly defined helps create a calm mood. To contrast with the two artists composition wise, I chose to create a more precise rose rather than abstract. I also chose to only have one flower since I wanted the focus to be on the figure. Milner uses many colors to define the leaves and give them form. I wanted to incorporate this into my piece. Having definition and details creates depth within the objects and helps define them. The backgrounds between Milner and Redon are very similar which I chose to recreate in my piece.

Odilon chooses to uses very dull colors contrasted with bright ones. The background to the piece shown below is very dull with brown and grey tints. The vase is a dull blue color contrasting with high saturated yellow and orange flowers flowing out of the vase. Odilon also uses warm colors with a pop of cool tones. The vase is blue which contrasts with having primarily warm toned flowers. Color Comparison Colorwise my piece was more inspired by Redon. The girl has muted colors which is seen in Milners pieces. The contrast in colors that Redon uses is seen with the red rose and yellow background. In contrast to Redon, Milner uses a variety of different shades and tones to add dimension to her figures. Redon often uses a simple shade and tone range but uses variety of different colors. Milner uses a variety of different tones but tends to keep the shade range limited. The picture above sticks to different shades of reds, greens, purples etc.

MILNERS CLOUDS Composition For the clouds I was heavily influenced by both artists. I chose to make my clouds individual rather than clusters which is seen in some sections of Milners pieces. Redon chooses to cluster his clouds but add dimension using different tones to show the figures. Redon make his clouds white and he blends them with the sky which can be seen in my piece. Unlike Milner I chose to do white clouds. Milner used colors similar to those in the sky but darker to give depth to the piece. MY CLOUDS REDONS CLOUDS

Reflection Comparison The research that was conducted has helped me improve my portfolio and myself as an artist. I have become more aware of techniques, composition, mood, and use of colors. Redon and Milner are two similar artists but different at the same time which is similar to myself. The IB Programme has helped me grow as not only a student but also as an artist. It has helped me become a well rounded global person. Without all the research done within this programme I wouldn t have been aware of the different global artists. Becoming aware of the global artists there are have helped me to diversify my portfolio and my techniques.
