2 Page 2 THE LION S ROAR For who I am there s not much to tell, but here are some clues that might keep you busy for a spell. Columbus is the capital of the state from which I was born. I have lived in six states and have visited 25! I have cruised around Greece, skied down Mont Tremblant, pedaled around Stanley Park, kayaked in the Pacific, and walked around Denali. Can you tell I love to travel? It doesn t matter if it is by car, boat, train, or plane! My first concert was Huey Lewis and the News, but my favorite was Billy Joel. Animals are great, I ve had quite a few. I love lasagna, strawberries and dark chocolate. Growing up I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. God granted me that wish. Guess who! DON T FORGET. THE LION S STORE IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS EVERY TUESDAY FROM 8AM-8:30AM WE ARE NOW FEATURING A CAFÉ! YOU CAN HAVE A MUFFIN AND HOT CHOCOLATE TO START YOUR DAY! CHECK OUT THE NEW ITEMS THAT ARE COMING IN ALL THE TIME!
3 Volume 6, Issue 15 Page 3 Middle School Science An Update by Mrs. Lutz Now that spring is here, our science thoughts turn to mud, machines, and munchies! In Earth Science, eighth graders are learning about how water travels through natural materials like sand, soil, and clay. We will next be thinking about how pollutants move with water. To this end, our students will be designing their own sludge-cleaning machines. We will test our ideas by having students clean a homemade sludge mixture made of water, dirt, pebbles, food coloring and oil. In Physical Science, seventh graders have just finished an engineering challenge to make parachutes! After reading about gravity, air resistance, and the history of parachutes, students took on the challenge of designing a chute that would float slowly down, and land inside a hula hoop target on the ground. We tried seven different designs in all. Pictured here is Chris with his winning parachute, modeled after a military design. In Life Science, fifth and sixth graders are using their knowledge of food materials and digestion to analyze meals, including meals that they like to eat at home, and also the lunch menu here at ILS. Our ideas about balancing a meal come from a site you can visit at We look forward to the upcoming Ed Fair evening. Please visit our science room then to see exhibits on mud, machines, and munchies--- and much more! Let s Go Fly a Kite Fresh Air & Fellowship at Kenosia Park FAMILY FUN DAY Sunday, April 7th 1:30pm Kenosia Park, 10 Christopher Columbus Dr. Bring a blanket, camp chair, a friend and a kite! Light snack will be available

5 Volume 6, Issue 15 Page 5 All our young artists have been very busy learning about different artists and techniques and creating lots of art. Pre-K has just finished a mixed media owl collage. In this piece they used oil pastels to create the background; the owl was made from cardboard and yarn with chenille claws and paper wings and eyes. Details were added with colored pencil. Each owl is unique, just like their creators! Kindergarten students have just begun a new piece based on the work of the Impressionist artist Claude Monet. They are using tissue paper collage to create a garden scene, layering bits of color to experiment with mixing colors just in time for Spring. Our first graders are doing a piece of art based on the Post-Impressionist George Seurat. He is famous for developing the style of painting called Pointillism and they are using the eraser end of a pencil to create the dots in a landscape painting. One of the things they have learned is that this type of art may look simple but takes a long time to do. The second and third graders have just finished their dragonfly masterpieces. The bodies are made of clay painted with iridescent paint and the wings were created with ink designs drawn on vellum. They are truly beautiful and will be finished when they are resting on a Georgia O Keefe inspired flower. The fourth graders have just begun a very challenging still life piece. They are drawing a pencil, paintbrush and an open palette/box of watercolors. Next week they will paint the individual oval sections using different watercolor techniques for each one wet on wet paint, wet on dry, salt, blotting, resist - there will be a total of eight techniques. I m very pleased with how hard they have worked to create a good drawing; painting it should be fun. Our final group, fifth through eighth grade, has been working on a long term project based on the art of Jasper Johns. Johns was a member of the Pop Art movement, where artists took objects from popular culture and reworked them into art. In Johns case it was often flags, targets and maps, which he worked up using collage and encaustic. Encaustic is a very old method of painting from the Byzantine era using melted wax to imbed and preserve pigments. The students have done a collage base and are currently cutting and using stencils to apply their chosen design. The final step will be an application of cold wax to seal the work and replicate Johns process. So in spite of the bad weather, the creative process goes on! Submitted by Mrs. Nemergut CASUAL DRESS DAY REMINDERS: MONDAY, APRIL 1ST Baseball Opening Day: Wear your favorite baseball teams colors or team logo wear FRIDAY, APRIL 12TH Coins for Comfort Dogs Thank You! We reached our goal of $1,000!
