A wonderful group of youth called Captive Free will be conducting the Wednesday Chapel service on April 13th. We will need families to house the youth ministry group on Tuesday, April 12th. Please contact the school office if you can help. The group consists of 3 men and 2 women. You may choose to house one, two, or all of them. Mr. Palkewick and Pastor Joel took them in the night we had to cancel due to the snow storm in February. Mr. P says that they were excellent house guests and were great with his son. This is a great opportunity to show our guests the great Christian community we have here at ILS. Thank you for your help!

2 Page 2 Think Spring! While the calendar said that Sunday, March 20th, was the first day of Spring, the thermometer certainly isn't showing it! However, Spring sprung last Thursday afternoon in the ILS cafeteria during Cooking Club. To celebrate the beginning of Spring, the Cooking Club prepared one of their favorite recipes, Dirt Cake. You may think that Dirt Cake is made out of mud, twigs, and bugs, but, it's not! Dirt Cake is a delicious mix of Oreos, pudding, cream cheese, Cool Whip, and gummy worms! Dirt Cake can be made in a clean flower pot, and a clean garden trowel could be used to serve it. Dirt Cake is always a big hit in Cooking Club, and we would like to share our recipe with you for your springtime celebrations! Dirt Cake 1 to 1 1/4 lb. pkg. Oreo cookies 1 (8 oz.) pkg. cream cheese 1/2 cup butter, softened 1 cup powdered sugar 3 cups milk 1 (12 oz.) tub Cool Whip (can use chocolate) 2 (3 1/2 oz.) pkg. instant vanilla or chocolate pudding 1/2 tsp. vanilla 4 gummy worms and/or other critters Crush Oreos. Put 1/3 of the crushed Oreos into a new, clean flower pot. Set aside. Mix butter, cream cheese, sugar and vanilla together. Set aside. Combine milk and pudding mix. Fold Cool Whip into the pudding. Fold together pudding mixture and cream cheese mixture. Layer this mixture (about 1/3 of it) onto the crumbled cookies in the pot. Next, add another layer of the cookie crumbs, then a layer of the pudding mixture, continuing until all ingredients are used. As you're layering the ingredients, decoratively place several gummy worms and critters in the "soil" so they will be seen emerging. If you have a toy (clean) garden trowel, a plastic daisy, or some edible flowers, these can also be used creatively to embellish the presentation. ***Taken from Cooks.com*** Cooking club hopes that you will enjoy this recipe! 3 Volume 4, Issue 14 News From the Art Room! Page 3 Time for an update on all the activity in the Art Room we ve been very busy! Preschool students have painted an owl and made leaves for the branch he will perch on. The next thing they will do is draw cars and trucks. Kindergarteners have learned how Piet Mondrian developed an abstract tree and have done a piece of work in his style using paint in primary colors and black construction paper strips on white paper very sharp looking. Today, the first graders used air dry clay to form owls which they will paint next week when they are dry. The owls have loops imbedded in them so they can hang as ornaments. Second graders have been working on an abstract piece using mixed media paint, paper and markers. Next week these collages will be cut into two inch squares and rearranged to form a pleasing design, like a crazy quilt. Third and fourth graders have been working on a different kind of self-portrait. Using magazine words and pictures they have assembled a collage that tells something about who they are and what they like. The next step is for them to tie it all together with some drawn designs. The older classes are all working on sculpture projects. The fifth graders are just finishing up their three dimensional fish. The fish were created from cardstock lightly stuffed with paper, two layers of paper mache and then decoupaged with abstractly painted tissue paper the students had created in a previous lesson. They have fancy paper fins and sparkly eyes. Sixth graders have made paper mache birds. The bodies were formed from crushed paper and several layers of paper mache. They were then painted with acrylic paint. They are standing on their wire legs on a wooden base eating bird seed! Last but not least, the seventh and eighth graders are working on sculptures of athletes in motion. They started with a wire armature (the skeleton); they wrapped the wire with foil to fill out the form (the muscles) and are now applying paper mache (the skin layer). They are finding the paper mache to be very messy! When the pieces are dry they will apply several layers of paper to make it look metallic and add whatever accessories they need to complete the piece. The finished pieces are sure to be wonderful! Hopefully they are all looking forward to their next Parents should be at the school by 4:30pm to pick up the kids. They will be brought up to the front foyer of the church for pickup. TRACK REMINDER: When you pick up your children after track practice, please make sure that they have all of their belongings! Please be sure to put your child s name in their clothes. Thanks to all who joined us at Mannen s Japanese Hibachi Restaurant on Sunday, March 27th to help support ILS. We raised $250 at the event! Be sure to join us on May 2nd for ILS Night at Elmer s Diner! A big THANK YOU! to Mrs. Calabrese-Gavay for her efforts in coordinating these events that have helped to raise $2,294 towards the Playground Fund! Square 1 Art orders have been placed. We have orders for 58 tiles for our Great Wall of Art! Spring Fling is coming Friday, April 8th. This is a fun social complete with games, crafts, snacks, and a DJ. The PTL is in urgent need of help to make this event a success. If you can help coordinate, set up, clean up, and/or to bring snacks for the event, please contact us.
