Respect Giraffe Craft

Fun and creative way of reminding young people to exercise respect! Instructions are given for three (3) kinds of respect giraffe crafts. Choose the one that fits your time and resources best. (Picture on last page of this file may be printed and displayed as an example for children.) COOKIE GIRAFFES: 1 Purchase 1 giraffe cookie cutter (available on the Internet for $1 and up). Alternatively, use one of the templates we provide, cut of thick cardboard. 2 Mix plain sugar cookie dough ahead of time, or purchase rolls of sugar cookie dough. 3 Children roll out cookie dough to desired thickness and take turns cutting giraffes. 4 Use a fork or similar tool to add texture to manes and tails. Add a short roll of dough for a tail, two more bits for horns. 5 Bake your cookies, and let them cool completely. 6 When cookies are cool, paint spots, manes, tails, and facial features with frosting or food paints. Be sure you use only colors that are safe for eating. 7 Talk about respect while working on your cookies. 8 Have a respect party when your cookies are done - or send them home with children. 9 Be sure no child has an allergy that will be affected by eating the cookies. the cookies and talk about ways that children can show respect.

2 CLAY or PLAY DOUGH GIRAFFES: 1 Purchase 1 giraffe cookie cutter (available at for $1 and up. Alterntaively, use one of the templates we provide, cut of thick cardboard. Templates differ in size so that you can have smaller or larger giraffes. 2 Children roll out light yellow clay to desired thickness and take turns cutting giraffes with the cutter or template. Smaller children will need help. Larger children should use plastic knives to cut around the outline. For less expensive play dough, use our free Salt Clay recipe below. 3 Use dark brown clay for mane, end of tail, hooves, horns, eyes, and nose. 4 Add texture to manes and tails with a plastic fork or similar object. 5 Use orange clay to add spots. Paint a red mouth with red food coloring paint. 6 Bake your giraffes, or let them air dry until hardened. 7 Talk about respect while working on your cookies. 8 Have a respect play with your completed giraffes. Allow children to act out, with their giraffes, the story: Georgey Giraffe s Giant Respect. 9 Have children use their giraffes for original stories about respect. Encourage them to tell stories that show when they should exercise respect in daily life. the giraffes and talk about ways that children can show respect. Salt Clay Recipe Ingredients: 1 cup white flour 3/4 cup table salt 1/4 cup fresh vegetable oil 1/2 cup room-temperature water food coloring Directions: Place flour, salt and vegetable oil in a large plastic or metal mixing bowl. Mix well with a wooden spoon or electric mixer. In a separate bowl, mix water and food coloring. Your water color should be darker than the clay color you desire, as it will lighten when mixed with the other ingredients. Add the colored water to the flour mixture gradually, mixing well after each addition. Bake completed objects 1 to 2 hours in moderately hot oven (150ºC or 300ºF).

3 CONSTRUCTION PAPER GIRAFFES: 1 Purchase 1 giraffe cookie cutter (available on the Internet for $1 and up). Alternatively, use one of the templates we provide, cut of thick cardboard. Templates differ in size so that you can have smaller or larger giraffes. 2 Using light tan or yellow heavy construction paper, children draw around the cookie cutter or template, and then cut out their giraffes. Smaller children will need help. (For sturdier giraffes, cut from heavy cardstock, or back with cardboard.) 3 Cut tail and horns of the same paper or card and glue in place. Color horns. 4 From dark brown paper, cut tail end, eye, and nose. Glue in place. 5 Color mane and hooves dark brown. Draw a red mouth. 6 Tear orange paper for spots. Glue to giraffe body, upper legs, and upper face. 7 Talk about respect while working on your paper giraffes. 8 Have a respect play with your completed giraffes. Allow children to act out, with their giraffes, the story: Georgey Giraffe s Giant Respect. 9 Have children use their giraffes for original stories about respect. Encourage them to tell stories that show when they should exercise respect in daily life. the giraffes and talk about ways that children can show respect. RESPECT GIRAFFE DISPLAY Respect Giraffes make a memorable display when placed in a paper jungle on a display table or bulletin board. Construct your jungle of paper or card stock trees, ground, and rocks. Add vines of green string with paper leaves attached. You will find ideas for your paper jungle in Georgey Giraffe s Giant Respect. Construct scenes for each part of the story, helping children recall what Georgey learned about respect. When your jungle is ready, place the children s Respect Giraffes in it.
