2 Page 2 THE LION S ROAR 1. When in a public facility always supervise your children, and ALWAYS accompany young children to the restroom. Make certain your children know to stay with you at all times while shopping and always CHECK FIRST with you or a trusted adult before they go anywhere. It is important to know where your children are and who they are with at all times. 2. If older children become separated from you while holiday shopping, have them meet you in a predesignated spot such as the sales counter of the store you were in or the mall s information booth. Teach younger children to look for people who may be sources of help within the store or mall such as a uniformed law-enforcement or security officer, store salesperson with a nametag, person with a nametag who is working in the information booth, or mother with children. They should stay close to where they first became separated and EVER leave the store/mall or go to the parking lot to look for you or your vehicle. 3. Make an outing to a mall a teachable experience in which children practice checking with you; locating the adults who may be able to help if they need assistance; and, for older children, going to the restroom with a friend. Practice having them CHECK FIRST with you before going anywhere within a mall or store. Remember, allowing your children to wear clothing or carry items in public on which their name is displayed may bring about unwelcome attention from inappropriate people looking for a way to start a conversation with your children. 4. Parents and guardians should not leave children alone at public facilities such as video arcades, movie theaters, or playgrounds as a convenient babysitter while they are holiday shopping. Never leave children in toy or specialty stores expecting store personnel to supervise and care for your children. They are not trained in this role, and it is not a function of their employment. 5. If you allow your older children to go to the mall or other activities without you, they should TAKE A FRIE D. It s more fun and much safer. Older children should check-in with you on a regular basis while they are out. Make certain a clear plan is in place to pick them up including where, what time, and what to do in case of a change in plans. 6. Nothing takes the place of your supervision when you are in a public place with your children. If you are going holiday shopping and feel you will be distracted, make other arrangements for the care of your children. It s easy to get distracted with all the sights, sounds, and crowds of holiday shopping, so make certain your children stay with you at all times. For more information about child-safety topics, please visit our website at or contact us at THE-LOST ( ). 3 Volume 5, Issue 5 Page 3 Papel Picado means pierced paper in Spanish. It is a decorative craft made out of paper cut into elaborate designs. Although it is a Mexican folk art, Papel Picado is used as a holiday decoration in many countries. The designs are commonly cut from tissue paper using a guide and small chisels. They can also be made by folding tissue paper and using small, sharp scissors. Common themes include birds, floral designs and skeletons. They are commonly displayed for both secular and religious occasions such as Easter, Christmas, the Day of the Dead, weddings, quinceañeras, baptisms, and christenings. Papel Picado comes from Chinese paper cutting and it was made in Europe during the sixteenth century. In Mexico, during the middle of the nineteenth century, people were forced to buy products from hacienda stores, where they encountered China paper. During the Aztec times, Aztecs used mulberry and fig tree barks to make a rough paper called Amatl. When tissue paper became available, artisans usually used 40 to 50 layers of tissue and punched designs into them using fierritos, a type of chisel. Papel Picado are hung with strings and are called banderitas. During our Clase de Español, students were able to make this Mexican craft and use them to decorate our new Spanish Classroom. Here s how we made them. What you need: colored tissue paper scissors string a pencil a glue stick What you do: 1. First, decide what colors of tissue paper you want to include in your banner. In Mexico, different colors are used for different holidays. For example, shades of purple are used at Easter time, and rainbow colors are used for Christmas and other holidays. 2. Now, cut your tissue paper into squares. They can be any size you want. (A good size is 12 x 12 inches.) 3. Fold one piece of tissue paper in half. Fold it in half again, and then in half again. 4. To make your design, cut shapes into all four sides of the tissue paper. Make sure to leave a small space between each of your designs. 5. You can also draw lines for your design before you start cutting. It's important to experiment with your designs because you don't know what they'll look like until you unfold your paper. In Mexico, people use all different kinds of symbols that are important to them in their Papel Picado. 6. When you're done cutting out your shapes, open the piece of tissue paper to see what you've created. 7. Once you have four or five panels, you can attach them to the string to make your banner. To do so, put some glue on the top of the first panel, and then fold it over the piece of string. Leave about an inch of space on the string between the panels. Also, make sure you leave at least six inches of string at each end so you can hang your banner up when you're done. 8. When your Papel Picado banner is finished, you're ready for the party to begin! 4 Page 4 THE LION S ROAR By the time you read this article, the first 50 days of school will have passed. A lot has happened in those first 50 days.two devastating storms, hundreds of math homework problems, and lots of learning. For those of you not familiar with the middle school math classroom, all this learning takes place in the basement of the school, right off of the cafeteria and next to the computer room (Hi Mrs. Lutz!). And as I was pointing out to the eighth grade just the other day, you may leave the math classroom but math doesn t leave you behind. It follows you and is around you every day---whether you are at home, in the grocery store, at the bank and even in the mall. Imagine that.math at the mall---shocking! We have been busy in middle school math with the sixth grade learning general mathematics, seventh grade studying pre-algebra and the eighth grade focusing on algebra. By following this curriculum, we can reach our goal of preparing all middle school math students for Geometry when they enter high school. Specifically, in sixth grade, we have started our progression to that goal by working on place value, properties of mathematical operations and the ever-wonderful order of operations----everyone remembers Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally. Next up for sixth grade: decimals. Meanwhile, in seventh grade, we have worked with all types of ways to display information---line graphs, pie charts, histograms, stem-and-leaf plots and more. To quote Ms. Murphy, Cool stuff. Coming up for the seventh grade are a bunch of wonderful things like scientific notation ( is that a special kind of note-taking Mr. B? ) and fractions. Finally, the eighth grade has explored graphing, negative numbers and recently, two variable equations. Nice! To spice things up a bit, we have thrown in a bit of Roman numerals and Greek letters, so that these students have some fun and get a taste of high-school math and beyond. Next up at bat for them: linear equations, slopes and intercepts. Across all three grades, we have been practicing writing in math. Students have a math journal where they have written about various topics. Among the topics students have written about are what the floor plan of their house looks like, how they would pick the better buy at a grocery store, and what it would be like if math teachers took over the world---a scary thought indeed. Lastly, I would like to thank all of the students, parents, teachers and church members who have really welcomed me to Immanuel Lutheran School and made this a great place to be. Thanks! Submitted by Mr. Bochniak Build the Pumpkin Patch is still going on now through November 30th. Pick up a form in the school office or us at ptl.sec@immanueldanbury.org to order your pumpkin today! The PTL would like to thank the many people who made our Veteran's Day Assembly a success. Thanks to Gina Tonner and Joel Wardenburg for coordinating, Ciara Tonic for helping to emcee, TJ Keller for playing trumpet, Taylor Dice for playing his flute, Diane Wardenburg for helping in the sound booth, Miss Cadmus for musical direction, and of course to our wonderful teachers and students for their songs and testimony. Many thanks to the parents who helped to set up, serve, and clean up, as well as those who donated cupcakes, juice, and items for the Veteran's brunch. We really appreciate it. Thanks also to Bagelman for their generous donation of bagels. On Tuesday, November 22nd, students, teachers and staff will be enjoying a Thanksgiving Feast sponsored by the PTL. We need help with set up the Monday prior at 3:00pm, help serving the lunch at 11:30am, and help with clean up. We can also use donations of apple cider and desserts. If you can help in any of these ways, please return the form that came home earlier this week, or drop a note to PTL.SEC@immanueldanbury.org SAVE THE DATES! 5 Volume 5, Issue 5 Page 5 It is hard to believe the holidays are just around the corner. As I m writing this, there are 8 days until Thanksgiving, 38 days, 15 hours, 35 minutes until Christmas, and 45 days, 10 hours, 54 minutes until New Years. With that said, the 4 th and 5 th grade classes would like to focus on Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving began in 1621 when the 53 remaining Pilgrims celebrated with a feast and gave thanks for their successful harvest. What are we thankful for? We started the year off with a bang school began with Hurricane Irene and Halloween was overshadowed by Storm Alfred. Storm Alfred caused school to be closed for a week and left many of us shoveling driveways, clearing fallen trees, and being without power for days (and winter hasn t even started). For many, it was a time to live like Pilgrims, experiencing life without modern conveniences of running water, heat, or electricity, which meant, much to the chagrin of the children, no TV, video games, or computers. How did we ever survive? Well, we did, day by day. So again, we ask, What are we thankful for? Michelle: I am thankful for the life God gave me! Amby: I am thankful for the life the Lord gave me. Lawrence: I am thankful for my mom, dad, and brother. Joshua: I am thankful for a home, my parents, food, video-games, my parents have jobs, and cars. Vikram: I am thankful for having parents and God being with me. Nicholas: I am thankful for God, food and water, a house, and a family! Deeksha: I am thankful for my parents and the things I have. Mrs. Puglisi: I am thankful for my faith, family, love, and career. "As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them." --John F. Kennedy Submitted by Mrs. Puglisi THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP! Thank you to everyone who came and supported our Book Fair. It had a rocky start because of the electricity outages the week before as even the Scholastic people had to work in the dark. We did not get the books delivered until Monday morning when normally everything is set up on Sunday evening. Thanks to the heroic efforts of Mrs. Amy Santoro and Mrs. Kelly McCormack the book fair was set up and ready for viewing that afternoon. We did not meet our sales goal this year but we came very close and we thank all of you for your purchases. Thanks also to the parents and friends of our school that manned the book fair during school hours as well as the hours of parent conferences. The teachers are all very thankful for the generosity of those families that purchased books for the classroom libraries from the teacher wish list book baskets. Happy Reading Everyone!
