Vol. 36 No. 5 Tucson Chapter May 2018 ELECTED BOARD PRESIDENT Helen Salkowski VICE-PRESIDENT Betsy Smullen/ Lydia Reichard SECRETARY Sandy DeBolt TREASURER Maura Robinson REGION REP. PRESIDENT S LETTER Helen Salkowski Hello dear members, Well, the heat is on and it s only May! Guess the only thing to do is stay indoors and stitch, with a glass of something cool to drink. I know I m not alone when I see summer time as an opportunity to work on (and even possibly complete!) a few UFO s. Of course, that doesn t mean to exclude starting a new project... I am especially looking forward to learning what Betsy has in store for us next meeting as our Summer Challenge. Unfortunately, I will be out of town for the June meeting, but I plan to participate in the challenge nonetheless, and I m hoping some of our snowbirds will as well. The program last meeting about the EGA National website opportunities was very informative, thank you Laura for a fine presentation. Since many of you missed the meeting, and May is our membership renewal month, I want to share this information on logging into the National website egausa.org and about updating your address with EGA National (since you need to do this separately from updating it on your membership renewal form). See Education section. It s important to do this if you have moved so that you will continue to receive the NeedleArts magazine (it does not get forwarded). One last reminder: Tucson ANG has invited all EGA members to their meeting on May 24 from 12-2PM to participate in their sale of all things needlepoint. Meeting is held at the Mini Time Machine Museum. Since I will miss the June meeting I will look forward to seeing some of you at our informal stitch-in on Thursday, July 5th at Ellie Towne, our usual meeting place and time. Til then, wishing you many peaceful hours of stitching. Helen BREAK-OUT GROUPS Beading: Jane Matter

2 PROGRAMS Vice President Betsy Smullen June Program: Embroidered Bell We will begin our summer challenge! Print out the page with the shape for transferring, bring supplies and questions and we ll have some fun. July and August Programs: Stitch-in. Come relax in the cool air and enjoy embroidery with friends. September Program: What I did this summer! Bring in pieces that you have worked on this summer, including our summer challenge. Embroidered Bell This is the image that started it all: from Inspirations 47 (2004), a beautiful ornament stitched with a variety of gold threads and beads on a white fabric. Our summer challenge for 2018 is to embroider the bell shape. Embroider the bell onto fabric and stitch with gold thread and add beads like the photo Embroider the bell in wool felt Embroider the bell into a crazy quilt Stitch the bell on congress cloth canvas Embroider the bell onto denim pants in rainbow-colored floss or on a tea towel as redwork Bead the bell entirely using peyote stitch Pulled work, anyone? Render the bell in stumpwork Bead the bell on leather using the Athabascan style technique Create the bell in Romanian Lace Our recent workshops have introduced us to lots of new techniques! Bring your work to our September 6 th meeting, regardless of its state of completion to share with everyone. Winter visitors are welcome to mail pieces to Betsy Smullen who will share them at the September meeting and then return them when you arrive back in Tucson. Design size is 3-1/2 x 3-1/2 Transfer design onto 7 x7 ground fabric Supplies Select ground material of your choice (canvas, evenweave, twill, quilting cotton, etc.) Choose threads to suit ground fabric Add beads, couched threads, sequins, charms and other embellishments as needed Needles, scissors, and other normal stitching tools

6 Pacific Southwestern Region Group Correspondence Course Registration May 1 June 30, 2018 Spring Splendor Teacher: Kay Stanis Finally, after that long cold winter and the long cold drizzle that melted the gray snow and rinsed the earth clean, comes the time of generous sun. Blossoms exuberantly play in the golden light and spring walks among us again. The foundation for this bouquet is Dupioni silk and the silk fibers used are soft twist silk and silk sewing thread. These threads combine with pearl purl, check purl, Japanese twist, Grecian twist, passing thread, and Japanese golds to create the butterfly, blossoms and leaves. The stitches include vertical, radiating, horizontal, voided, and diagonal satin; long and short over padding and split stitch; normal and pattern couching. Students will also learn how to transfer their own patterns and twist flat silk. The focus of the class will be on couching, filling areas with purls, and blending long and short over padding. Course information Proficiency Level: Intermediate to advanced Prerequisites: Some experience working with silk Project: Framed picture Size: 8 x 10 design on 13.5 x 18 silk foundation Fabric: Dupioni silk Threads: Silk: five skeins of soft twist silks, four values of red, one of gold; Silk sewing thread. 8 Pacific Southwestern Region Group Correspondence Course Registration May 1 June 30, 2018 Maharajah s Elephant Teacher: Mary Long This glitzy elephant is a Maharajah s fantasy creature. Perhaps it is a jeweled decoration in a wonderful palace. It could be a toy for the Maharajah s son and heir. Or maybe a Maharajah really can have a brightly colored elephant with gold feet and tusks! Let your imagination loose when choosing your colors and threads. The decorative border is optional. Although the primary goal of this project is to teach you the technique of canvas appliqué by attaching the ear to the elephant, you may complete the project by stitching the ear directly on the canvas ground fabric. Stitches used include tent, rice, eyelet, swirl, alternating Scotch, mosaic, Rhodes, satin, and brick as well as several cross stitches including double, upright and Smyrnas. The background is a bargello pattern. Course information Skill Level: Intermediate. Prerequisites: The student should be comfortable using compensation and reading stitch diagrams and charts. 10 LIBRARY Suzanne Knepper The new library on line catalogue system is now available. Access is available through this link: ihttps://cloud.collectorz.com/egalibrarytucson/books. Our hope is that our membership will use this resource more by having this computerized access. Please check out the site. We appreciate your feedback. The Tucson EGA library on line catalogue is a work in progress. The books are being cataloged by subject, which is determined by the computerized program, not by stitchers, which means some are not where they are supposed to be in the list. Please be patient with this cataloging process. We already have over 200 books catalogued, but with over 1000 books in our library, the process will take some time. If you are looking for an older book, they are being placed into the system as time permits. All the books can still be checked out via the old list on our chapter website. WORKSHOPS Barbara Lewis Maura Robinson Deborah Mitek will be teaching a workshop sponsored by the Tucson Chapter on October 30 th and 31 st (Tuesday and Wednesday) at the Mini Time Museum. Deborah is a needlework designer and teacher specializing in silk ribbon embroidery and surface stitching on both fabric and canvas. The class will be A Garden View. This is a 5 X 7 photo transfer design, which features Silk Ribbon Embroidery. It is a study in perspective and the knotted stitch Cost of the Class for Tucson EGA members is $135. This includes a kit fee of $115. Deadline for sign up is September 15. A $25 deposit is required with sign up. Space is limited so sign up early with Barbara.

11 BEADING Jane Matter For June, Sharon Marchant will have patterns (and probably some assistance!!) for Peyote with a Twist (not crochet). Here is some information from Sharon, photos are attached: Class pattern will be $1.00. You will need 2 colors of size 11 round seed beads, needle thread and scissors, supplies will be available if needed. The gray and purple bracelet with the starfish charm (see below) shows basic pattern in gray with single purple stripe (purple accent strip is size 15 peyote with a twist). Other patterns will be available at the meeting. For anyone wanting a head start, Jill Wiseman's YouTube video Peyote with a Twist Basic video is helpful to see the technique. If you want to start with a basic Kumihimo rattail cord for an internal core you can make it in advance. MEMBERSHIPS Deedee Stockman Memberships are due in May. Please renew today to continue having access to the many resources available through the EGA and our local Guild.
