St. Louis, Missouri July/August 2012 President s Message Hello all, Boy did we jump into the frying pan early this year! We all had a good time at fun night at the June potluck! Thanks to everyone who came we had a great meal and fun games. I have been staying in because of the heat. I will be having surgery on my rotor cuff again July 2. 3 PROGRAM OFFICER AND COMMITTEE REPORTS THANK YOU to all who participated in the "end of year" Potluck we had at the June general meeting. The food was delicious and the games stimulating!!!!!! As of the preparing for this newsletter, the August Tea will NOT take place this year. The organization of the programs for the year at the General Meeting are under way. Susan will be in touch with those that have signed up to present/organize a program for a monthly General Meeting. September Program Buttons Buttons Buttons Does anyone have buttons? Bring 6 buttons to the September meeting to trade. Bring your interesting buttons or collections to share their stories as we learn about this utilitarian item in our lives. SUNSHINE If you know of a member that should receive a card (get well, thinking of you, sympathy, etc.) from Show Me Stitchers, please contact Sharon King. MEMBERSHIP A total of 22 members renewed their membership with Show-Me Stitchers. We also added one plural member. A plural member is a person whose primary membership is though another chapter but also participates in other chapters. Our plural member is Solveig Walstrom who is the Regional Director. The Annual Member Roster is included in this mailing for chapter members. For chapter members that were not at the pot luck, membership cards are attached with removable glue. If anyone would like an electronic copy of the roster, please contact Janet Garvin and she will to you. Stitch Challenge... At the February 14, 2012 general meeting a "Stitch Challenge" was offered to the membership. The piece is a heart Linda Dorrill designed to support the American Heart Association. The blackwork bands are stitched in the double running stitch. With the weather as HOT as it is, this would be a good time to just sit in the air conditioned house and work on the stitch challenge. Janet Garvin is just about finished with her piece and I am so proud of myself...i have gathered all the supplies I will need to start the project. Yes, I know gathering the supplies doesn't qualify for the wonderful reward that will be presented to those who FINISH the challenge!!!!!!!!! BUT, it is a start!!!!!!!!!!!!the deadline to qualify for the reward for the stitch challenge is the February 2013 meeting. It might seem months away but time flies and the COOL days of February will be here before you know it,soooooooooooooo get started!!!!!! If you have questions regarding the Challenge or if you need a pattern, please get in touch with Susan Meyland-Smith.

4 Page 4 July/August 2012 CHAPTER NEWS Janet Garvin and Helen O Mara attended the South Central Regional Seminar in Shreveport, LA from Jun 5 to June 10. On our first day there we attended the Region Day event where Carole Lake and Michael Boren lectured about Elizabeth I of England. They showed pictures of the fashion of the time which included a great deal of needlework. It was very interesting. During our free time we toured a wonderful merchandise room, and mingled with the very friendly people of the SCR region. We saw Eileen Chalk (current Show-Me Stitcher) and Kathy Scioneaux and Jane Cornue who are former chapter members who now live in the SCR. Janet took a 3 day class with Michael Boren with a needlepoint project called Frankie. It is a beautiful piece which pays homage to Frank Lloyd Wright. It uses wonderful fibers and we learned several great stitches Helen took 2 classes at the SCR seminar in Shreveport. The 2-day class taught by Kay Stanis was called 'Copper Illumination.' She showed us how to add copper to our piece as stems for flowers or to make a design on a piece of copper using stippling to add to our piece. The design she taught had blackwork in turquoise silk, 3 colors of kreinik, purple seed beads for the flowers and copper for the flower stems and leaves. The tulip design on the copper was stippled. The 1-day class was 'Knotta lotta trouble' taught by Carole Lake. This class was more informal as Carole demonstrated different knots and stitches. It was fun to laugh with other stitchers as we practiced our knots. The accommodations were very nice and the hospitality was warm. SCR region sure knows how to have fun. Show-me Stitchers minutes of the meeting on Jun. 12, members in attendance The June meeting was our potluck supper. After supper we had a short meeting. PROGRAMS: Susan asked for members to sign up to plan the program for that month. She has ideas and plans to share if anyone needs suggestions. So far the following months are covered Sept.--Sharon; Oct.--Janice; Dec.--Luncheon; Feb.-- Helen; March--Ursel; April--Janet; May--Ann; June--Potluck supper. If you can cover November or January please contact Susan. Work continues on the Christmas stocking. Helen will work on it next. The August tea will be at Ursel s. Susan passed out some helpful stitching information. SUNSHINE: Sharon brought the newsletter acknowledging our gift in Jane s name. SHOW AND TELL: Florence and Helen had items to show. Don't miss the behind-the-scenes treasures featured on many tours; these experiences are not accessible when touring on your own. Because these tour opportunities are so unique, space is limited. This exhibit, unique to the RMR seminars, showcases original, creative, and adventurous stitching based on a theme. The theme for this year is Visions of Santa Fe. And as a bonus, this year will include an Encore of past Prospectors entries! You will certainly need to make time to see each piece. Another not-to-be-missed special event is the President's Farewell Exhibit of Helenn Rumpel's "Embroidery Enlightenment: an Artist's Concept". This event will reveal Helenn's unique fiber art and what it is that leads her to incorporate diversified techniques into her brightly hued and gem-like interpretive works. Her stitchery and innovative framing of embroidery enhance her compositions of beauty, and show how teaching renews the artistic experience. Then, you must remember to be first to arrive at The Trading Post! This merchandise event has our experts combing the New Mexico area for distinctive items unique to the South West. Look for kits, beads, tools, materials, accessories and trinkets. Will you find that exceptional and rare handmade item you need? 9 July/August 2012 Page 9 The Show-Me Stitchers Chapter is a member of the Embroiderers Guild of America, Inc. EGA is an educational, non-profit, and non-discriminatory organization founded in The mission of the Embroiderers' Guild is to stimulate appreciation for and celebrate the heritage of embroidery by advancing the highest standards of excellence in its practice through education, exhibition, preservation, collection and research. Embroidery is defined as an art form using a variety of threads, a needle and different types of stitches to achieve texture, embellishment and ornamental interest on fabric. Membership is open to all stitchers amateur or professional beginner or advanced. Dues are $45 per year and include NeedleArts magazine and the chapter newsletter ThreadLines. Guests and visitors may attend two meetings free of charge before being invited to join. Meetings are held the second Tuesday of every month at the Ladue Chapel, 9450 Clayton Road, Ladue, MO The meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. Meetings are not held in July and August.
