Needlepoint Now News Between the Threads FROM ELI ZABETH April 2016 All the signs of Spring! Spring has sprung here in Elmira, Oregon, home of Needlepoint Now.

I live for my weekend trips to the garden store where I load up on seeds, flower and vegetable starts while keeping in mind that I should only buy as much as I can plant that day.

The pieces in the magazine reflect the season s theme so we always feel that we get an early start on all the seasons and holidays.

The birdhouse is adorned with spring flowers and accented with small birds. Sew Much Fun! has even designed small three-dimensional birds to accompany the birdhouse.

The weather has cooperated with my gardening urges so on my day off I have been spending a lot of time outside digging in the dirt. It s been wonderful. I live for my weekend trips to the garden store where I load up on seeds, flower and vegetable starts while keeping in mind that I should only buy as much as I can plant that day. The Needlepoint Now team loves spring because we can take our lunches outside and sit on the patio while enjoying the sunshine. The pieces in the magazine reflect the season s theme so we always feel that we get an early start on all the seasons and holidays. The May/June issue cover has a wonderful birdhouse designed by Sew Much Fun! and stitched by Cindy Saltzman of Cindy s Needle Art. The birdhouse is adorned with spring flowers and accented with small birds. Sew Much Fun! has even designed small three-dimensional birds to accompany the birdhouse. We are seeing more three-dimensional elements and designs in needlepoint. The industry has risen to the challenge of finding more creative ways to design with needlepoint and Sew Much Fun! is one of the companies that has been leading the charge. Their 3-D animals and people have been delighting stitchers for years. Saying goodbye to a great teacher On a sad note, the industry lost one of our creative designers recently. Caela Conn Tyler passed away suddenly on March 24 th from an aneurysm. Micaela C. Tyler March 5, March 24, 2016 Caela was the first needlepoint teacher that I hired to teach a workshop. She came to Oregon twenty years ago to teach her design Water Lilies to the Willamette Chapter of ANG. She was a wonderful teacher who did a lot to further people s interest in needlepoint and embroidery. She inspired me to be more creative with my stitching and think outside of the box. Among other things, Caela was known for the threedimensional elements that she added to designs. She was adding beads, tassels and other embellishments to her canvases in her early years of needlepoint design, a career that spanned over 40 years. Water Lilies featured 3-D flower petals on the lilies that were stitched on a separate piece of canvas and appliquéed to the main canvas. Caela introduced me to this technique and I have used it ever since. Back in 2008 Caela contributed a small ornament to be published in Needlepoint Now called The Starburst Ornament. The design features a round acrylic jewel that is attached to the ground with detached buttonhole stitch. In honor of Caela, I have included the article for you. It is a fun, easy project that won t take you very long. When you stitch it, think of Caela. The original ornament was stitched on a perforated paper form that was available through a company called Tokens and Trifles, which were later bought out by Kreinik. The shape, Bonbon, is no longer available but we have a package to raffle. Send in your customer ID number and we will enter you in a drawing to with the package of four shapes. The drawing will be held May 6, The ornament can be stitched on canvas as well as paper. Ad Reminder!
