One trunk show will be in the morning and one in the evening. She dresses in period costume during her presentations. Come see them both. PLEASE NOTE THAT WE WILL BE AT THE FARMINGTON MUSEUM, 3041 E. MAIN ST. AM Program: GATHER UP THE FRAGMENTS CIVIL WAR QUILTS. Quilts and the Civil War are interwoven in a way that will enlighten and entertain the audience. This trunk show features quilts, including authentic Civil War quilts. Find out what kind of quilts were made for the soldiers and what kinds might have been used on the Underground Railroad. PLEASE NOTE THAT WE WILL BE AT THE FARMINGTON MU- SEUM, 3041 E. MAIN ST. PM Program: UNCOMMON QUILTS FROM COMMON THREADS: FEEDSACK QUILTS & MORE. Take a nostalgic journey through the 1940s, 50s and 60s as Jeananne traces the nation s history, reviews styles and trends, and explains why this time in quilt history is often overlooked. Jeananne brings her collection of feedsack quilts.

3 Page 3 August September 2014 Hey Guild Friends, I missed you all at the July guild meeting. I am at the moment in Alaska visiting my daughter and her family. Quilting has been put on the back burner for a couple of weeks. Fishing has taken it's place! I was able to stop in Palmer, Alaska at a very nice shop for just a couple of minutes. Maybe I can stop again when we head back to Anchorage? We just got back to my daughter's in Delta Junction. We went on a day cruise out of Seward and saw so much!! We were able to see whales jumping out of the water, otters swimming along, porpoise playing alongside the cruise ship. We were able to watch a huge chunk of glacier fall into the ocean and listen to the "groaning" of the glacier. We saw a lot of jellyfish and even a bear. What an awesome day! We then went to Valdez where just this last winter a huge avalanche went across the road. It is amazing how they were able to clear the road and get the river back on course!! Sorry to give a travelogue but what an amazing time we are having! Attached is a picture of my little fisherman... 4 Page 4 August September 2014 San Juan Quilters Guild Board Meeting Minutes July 10, 2014 The meeting was called to order by Vice-President Kim Duke The May minutes were read and approved as published. Cathy Korzan made the motion to accept the minutes as read and Shellie Purcell 2 nd the motion. Treasurer Shellie Purcell reported the balances as of June 30 with approximately $5800 in checking and $10,300 in CD Savings. New Business: Recently some rumors and inaccurate speculation has presented itself within the Guild creating hurt feelings and discontent. Concerns over this were brought to the Board. There were statements made regarding discrepancies between the 2013 Quilt Show Budget and the Audit findings. These statements are inaccurate and reflect poorly on the integrity of the Board, the Auditors. and the Committee. Shellie Purcell and Kim Duke as present and past Treasurers will be putting together a clarifying statement to be published and shared with the membership. Other concerns brought to the Board involved misunderstandings and hurt feelings that occurred over Programs. One issue overheard was that the Evening members do not want a program in the evening. This is not the case. The other issue involved Kids Day and how it didn t result as in years past there is no blame to place regarding this. Kim Duke, by default, has stepped up in the interim until we have a 2015 Program Chair volunteer. She will be determining what needs to be done to secure a spring and fall known-name speaker and also address the remaining months with member suggestions. It was decided that Board Minutes will be shared as part of the monthly meetings. Committee Reports: San Juan County Fair: Gail Hoffman reported that passes would be provided and collected daily for those that volunteer to work. Free admission is Canned Food Day on Monday 8/11, and Senior Citizen day on Wednesday 8/13. There are 7 donated quilts so far. Newsletter: Cathy Korzan will send out at the end of next week submissions needed by then. Programs: Nancy Mitchell reported on behalf of Dixie Jackson. The next workshop is Portrait Quilts, given by Michelle Jackson from Albuquerque. The date is August 13 and there are still seats available. Quilt Show Committee: Nancy Mitchell has the entry forms for the 2014 Quilt Show these need to be turned in by September 24. Sign-up sheets are available for the required work positions from Wednesday s take in to Saturday s take down. A motion to adjourn was made by Gail Aspromonte and 2 nd by Nancy Mitchell. 5 Page 5 August September 2014 Quilt Show Information 2014 Quilt Show News Show dates and times: Friday, October 10, 10:00 AM 5:00 PM and Saturday, October 11, 10:00 AM 5:00 PM Admission - $5/day, $1/day for children and our special needs groups attendees Guild Members may pre-purchase a $5 nametag pass good both days of the show. Those who sign up to work the show will be provided a nametag pass. The Quilt Show venue will also be open on Friday, October 10, 5:00 PM 9:00 PM during the Farmington Art Walk. Admission is free. Reminders: Pick up your quilt entry forms a guild meeting or contact Nancy Mitchell, to get them. Quilt entry forms are due by September 24! VOLUNTEERS NEEDED to prep for the show (Wednesday and Thursday) and to work the show (Friday and Saturday). Please sign up on the Volunteer Duty Rosters at a guild meeting or call Nancy to sign up! Quilts Check-in Day for your quilt(s) to hang in the show is Wednesday, October 8, 10:00 AM 7:00 PM. You ll need to drop off your quilt(s) at the Civic Center during that time. If you can t make that time please arrange for someone you trust with your quilt(s) to do that for you! And remember if you didn t submit you quilt entry form(s) by September 24 you will have to save that quilt for the next show. Contact Gail Hoffman, , to help with take in of quilts on Saturday, August 9 and hanging quilts on Sunday, August 10. Contact Joanne Oakes, , regarding making contributions to the fair raffle quilts. San Juan Quilters Guild Members Reminders 1. Our mission statement is: The purpose of the Guild is to educate and create a community of quilters to share ideas, develop skill and encourage the tradition of quilting. (Article II) 2. To show a quilt in the SJQG annual quilt show a member must be in good standing with dues paid by the yearly roster deadline of March Read the San Juan Quilters Guild Bylaws and Policies for ALL members responsibilities. 4. Quilt Guild Newsletter Policy 2014: The newsletter will be ed to everyone providing an address. There will not be a USPS mailing to those members. The newsletter is available on the website for those who say they haven t gotten their ed copy. The newsletter will be USPS mailed to those people without addresses. This policy was first published in the December 2013 January 2014 newsletter.

7 Page 7 August September 2014 Programs MARK YOUR CALENDARS: WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 13 TH, 2014 WORKSHOP: LIGHT THE PORTRAIT WITH COLOR Learn how to make your portraits shine with color! This is a one day workshop designed to help the student create a portrait that expresses the personality of the person in the portrait. We will discuss choosing a good photo, how to expand the range of flesh tones, drawing to give dimension, how to add color to show personality, and how to manipulate value to direct the viewer.

8 Page 8 August September 2014 To: Members of San Juan Quilters Guild From: Gail Aspromonte, SJQG President 2013 Carol Spangler, SJQG President 2012 As past presidents of the San Juan Quilters Guild, we have become very concerned about statements being made that the Guild is in financial straights. Members are being told that the Guild is very short of money thus many activities and services are being curtailed. The audit of the Guild s financial books done March 11, 2014 showed that the Guild has funds in a checking account, a sizable savings account and a CD adding up to a substantial amount of money (ask treasurer for amount). The last few audits have shown that the Guild has kept a healthy amount of money in our bank account. We feel that the membership should be made aware of the funds that are available for the Guild to use and not be led to believe that the Guild is in financial trouble. These statements need to be curbed since they reflect poorly on past officers and Board members. It is prudent to be careful with Guild funds but not at the expense of the Guild functioning as a worthwhile and meaningful organization.
