December Meeting: Lighthouse Church, Rosemount, Tues, December 11 th, 630 pm. Directions to the Eagan Community Center: The community center is off of Pilot Knob Road between Lone Oak Road and Yankee Doodle Road in Eagan. Turn west off of Pilot Knob onto Central Parkway. Follow Central Parkway to the sign for the Eagan Community Center and turn right. Follow the signs for All Deliveries (second right turn). The road winds around to the lower level of the parking lot. Enter through the lower-level door and look for the sign indicating where we are meeting. Note: No outside food or beverages are allowed in the community center. Concessions are available. See you at the Eagan Community Center, Tuesday, November 13th, 7pm. A Note from DCSQ Chair Karen Asmundson Has anyone else noticed that TV and radio ads are now focused on holiday gift shopping? It seems as soon as the clock struck midnight on Halloween, the flood gates of advertising switched over to holiday mode. While I m not going to be disappointed when election ads are over, hearing holiday messages still makes me a little anxious. Christmas is less than two months away. To help quell that anxiety, our November program will feature four DCSQ members who will demo Quick Gift ideas for the holiday season, or just great ideas for gifts in general. Join us to learn how to make an apron out of a dress shirt (Karen Murray), make a fortune cookie bag (Beth Kobliska), make a pillowcase out of a yard of fabric (Jeannette Root) and use up your fabric scraps to make nifty clothesline bowls (Nicole Anderson Davis). Thank you to these talented women for sharing these nifty ideas! It is certain to be an inspiring program. Calling All DCSQ History Buffs/Stuff Karen If you are a keeper of any DCSQ binders, old documents or other stuff of historical significance, please bring the items to the November meeting or drop off at Karen s house. The Board will review and organize the info and use it for updating Board position job descriptions. January 2019 Program Tips, Tricks & Techniques Karen Do you have a tried and true tip or trick that makes quilting easier or more fun? We are requesting members to share their Tips, Tricks & Techniques at the January 2019 program. We are looking for people to share their ideas in five minutes or less. Please contact/sign-up with Karen Asmundson if you are interested. 1

2 October Meeting Minutes Sunny Kline It was a dark, rainy autumn night, and we had a great gathering of 30 members and guests. Our speaker was Rachel Montez, of SewTrendy. Rachel has been quilting for 15 years, and also loves to knit and do needlepoint. At her Sew Trendy studio in Eagan, she specializes in Minky items, including scarves, shawls, blankets, pillow cases, baby items, and is constantly designing new items. She sells the Minky fabric, patterns, and finished items at her studio and on her Etsy shop online and Facebook. She had a fabulous trunk show for us, featuring many of her year-round and holiday-themed items (see photos in this newsletter). She also offered many helpful tips on sewing with Minky always use a ball point needle (for knits), seam with a long narrow zig-zag stitch instead of a straight stitch, don t cut the selvedges off, and always sew WITH the nap, selvedge first! Thanks Rachel! December Pot Luck Susie Smidt Our annual Christmas potluck will be Dec 11 and the time will be 6:30 instead of 7:00. Stay tuned for the location of this event and think about your favorite dessert or salad that you would like to bring for the potluck Small Quilt Auction Susie Smidt It s time to begin thinking about what you would like to contribute to the small quilt auction for this year s quilt show. We will begin collecting your creative donations at the January meeting. As most of you know, the store and small quilt auction are our fundraisers for the year that allow us to pay to have fun speakers at our monthly meetings. Think about what you could make Quilt Show Fabric Challenge Arlette and Jackie Let s have some fun! The theme of our 2019 Quilt Show is Color Makes Me Happy. In keeping with the theme of color, our Fabric Challenge for the show will be fun and bright and colorful! 1. Select one Kaffe Fasset fabric (You may use more than one. One is a minimum.) Kaffe fabrics can be found at Quilt Cove, Eagle Creek, on line, in your quilt stash, and at other quilt stores you visit. 2

3 2. Make a table topper of some kind, a wall hanging, or a 3-dimensional figure that answers the question: What s on your table? (The ideas are limitless. Be as creative as you want using any other fabrics or embellishments you like.) 3. Limit the perimeter or circumference size to 80 inches or less. Add a hanging sleeve, please. 4. Place your entry in a brown paper bag with the completed entry form found at the end of the newsletter. 5. Bring your bag to the Dakota County Historical Museum (where our show will be held) on drop off day of February 14 or And most important have fun! If you have questions, contact Arlette Kreager at kreachers@sbcglobal.net or Jackie Grinde at jackie.grinde@comcast.net Quilt Show 2019 Updates Sunny Kline and Arlette Kreager Plans for the quilt show are progressing on schedule! We will have lecture tickets for members who join or renew at the December holiday gathering and at the January meeting. We will soon have flyers that members can take to quilt shops, other guilds, and long arm quilters studios. It is time for everyone to start planning what to enter in the show! We have the Gypsy Wife Challenge, and the What s on Your Table Challenge that will be great exhibit as well as the wonderful quilts you will be entering. This year we are going to expect that everyone who enters quilts and is available will help with either set-up or take-down, or some other aspect of the show, including store setup and working in the store. There are plenty of jobs for everyone, even those who have physical limitations, such as helping to serve lunch, pinning the tags on the quilts, folding up the sheets we spread on the floor to keep the quilts clean, and others. And it s fun to work together and have a hands on opportunity with beautiful quilts. We are also working to find students to help with the heavy lifting, who would then earn community service hours for their contribution of time. The Speaker Workshop is going to be exciting, learning to work with Ombre (graduated color) fabric to make a beautiful throw-size quilt! See the picture of the quilt we will be making in different color-ways! 3

Our printable label fabric is nonadhesive and some Wonder Under would do the trick to secure our label to quilts we donate. Quilts for children/teens will be donated to Gillette Children s Hospital. The most common size for baby/toddler is 54 x54 and for teens 54 x72 but other sizes will be greatly appreciated. Please continue to make the nine patches, we will assemble those into a twin size quilt for the Minnesota Veteran s Home next spring. 4

5 Website Information - dcsq.org Sue Tobias Want an easy way to look through the quilts from the show? Go to our website, under "annual quilt show" to see the 2018 show as well as past years shows. As always, Members Only page has a password, i am a member, with spaces and not caps. Mentoring Opportunities Karen Asmundson At the Sept meeting, the Board discussed establishing two different leadership opportunities. Read on for more info. Mentoring--Big/Little Quilters Are you a new quilter who would like to ask a more experienced quilter for help? Are you interested in sharing your quilting expertise with others? If so, we have a deal for you! We would like to establish an informal mentoring program so that new quilters can work with experienced quilters to become better quilters. The program will be called Big Quilter/Little Quilter (taking suggestions for a better name, if necessary). Please contact Karen Asmundson to sign up to be a Big or Little. We will publish the list of Bigs and Littles in November and ask everyone to pair up. Karen can help with assignments if necessary. Mentoring Make a Difference! Would you like to be more involved in the Guild but aren t sure how? We are looking for members who are interested in learning more about specific DCSQ positions with the hope to create continuity in our Guild leadership. Those interested would meet with existing Board members to learn more about each job function to increase confidence and knowledge of the position. It s like Apprentice without the risk of being fired. If you are interested, please contact/sign-up with Karen Asmundson. DCSQ Job Descriptions - Secretary The position of Secretary will be coming open next May, when Dakota County Stars has its elections. The Secretary position is perfect for someone who likes to work at home and doesn t have to do a lot of errands and tasks outside the house for her volunteer activities. It does require some computer skills. There is a Secretary s Binder that contains current member list, copies of articles of incorporation and bylaws, and other official documents of the Guild. The Secretary has the following responsibilities to do for the guild: 5

6 1. Attend Board meetings a few times a year, and take minutes. Then type up the minutes and distribute to the Board members by , for edits or additions. Once the minutes have been edited, the final version goes out to the Board members again, and gets posted on our website by the Website chair. Being on the Board is a fun way to get to know others, work collaboratively on the Guild s projects and decision-making, and keep our Guild vital and active. 2. Attend monthly meetings, and write up a paragraph or two summary for the newsletter. Take pictures of the presentation if suitable. Send the summary and pictures to the Newsletter editor by . If you need to miss a meeting, usually someone else can help you with the summary and pictures. 3. Make sure someone can take pictures of Show-and-Tell. At present, the Secretary and Newsletter Editor share that task, but anyone can do it. 4. Once a year, we have to renew our Non-Profit status with the Minnesota Secretary of State s office. This is done online, in October or November, and takes about 10 minutes. You log on to the site, enter the guild s number, and click the appropriate boxes. Renewal is free. Then you update the president s info (for mailings) and print the certificate that appears on the screen, which is then placed in the Secretary s notebook. 5. Keep an archive of the newsletters (printed and/or electronic) and other neat things about the guild. DCSQ Job Descriptions Newsletter The Newsletter position will become available next May also. This is the perfect job for someone who likes to use a computer, but does not have extensive word processing skills. 1. The Newsletter Chair is responsible for editing and printing/distributing/ ing a monthly publication containing pertinent information about meetings, events, and membership. 2. Maintaining a mailing list and list of members (although the membership list is currently maintained by the Treasurer). 3. Sending out mass s to members as requested. 4. Taking pictures of the guest speakers and Show-and-Tell as appropriate. 5. Attend Board Meetings and provide input to decision making as able. 6
