President s Message Well, by the calendar...it is spring...some days are warm, some still wintery. I did see a forsythia bush just about ready to pop, so it won't be long. Spring always brings new growth, new beginnings, and maybe some new inspirations. In April our speaker will be Catherine Redford, and she will be teaching two workshops. In May we have Suzi Paron with her lecture and workshop on Barn Signs. We will also hold our elections in May. Our June meeting is an all day sew in, always a fun time. Please visit our website for more information. It may seem that this NSQG year is winding down, but we still have many more events and happenings. Leading up to our quilt show September 23-24, 2017, our beautiful raffle quilt, "Snails in the Blueberry Patch" and doll, Samantha, will be traveling quite a bit. Find out about our quilt challenge in this newsletter. The salt water taffy block fits well with the title of our quilt show, Sweet Inspirations. We will be promoting the guild and selling raffle tickets at the Rosemont show in April and at the Spring Fiber Fling in Woodstock, Illinois, in May, as well as many other Guild meetings and community events. So put away your turtlenecks and get out your sandals...there are many opportunities to get out and enjoy the wonderful weather ahead and be a part of our quilting community. Quilt On... Marcia Bowen, President April 20 Catherine Redford Lessons I Learned While Quilting Program Line Up Catherine Redford is fiber artist who brings her wide knowledge of quilting, embroidery, and other fiber arts to her presentations along with her great sense of humor and adventure! You can check out Catherine s website for more information about Catherine and her eclectic approach to all things fiber.
April 21 Friday Workshop: Steps to Successful Free Motion Quilting 9:00-4:30 Elk Grove Library 1001 Wellington Avenue, Elk Grove Village This full day workshop is designed to give the beginning or hesitant machine quilter a confidence boost. For those of us who have been checkbook quilters, it s a great opportunity to move on to doing the quilting ourselves on our home machines. Catherine has recently published, Modern Machine Quilting which is rated 5 stars on Amazon. This workshop gives you an opportunity to learn from a master. There are still a few places available, contact me at marnechil@gmail.com if you are interested. April 22 Saturday Workshop Saturday Workshop: Folk Art Stitching 9:00-4:30 Schaumburg Township District Library - Rasmussen North 130 S Roselle Rd, Schaumburg, IL In this full day workshop you will learn basic embroidery stitches using a preprinted sampler and then learn embellishment techniques. Catherine has used her embroidered pieces in art quilts, and learning her techniques may inspire you to do so as well! There are still a few places available, contact me at marnechil@gmail.com if you are interested. May 18 Suzi Perron Barn Quilts and the American Trail Movement Learn more about the beautiful barn side quilt paintings you have seen when you are driving through farm land. Suzi is an in demand speaker, visiting 23 states this year, and an author of books documenting the barn quilt movement. Her books are rated 4.5 stars on Amazon. Don t miss this lecture! All materials will be provided as part of the $40 kit fee. This workshop is currently booked to capacity, but if you want your name added to the waiting list please send me an . marnechil@gmail.com June 17 Meeting and Sew-in Rolling Meadows Community Center 9:00 4:00 Instead of our regular meeting on the 3 rd Thursday in June, mark your calendar for Saturday, June 17. We are meeting for a day of sewing. Bring along your machines or hand sewing. The challenge quilts are due this day and will be voted on before lunch. After the lunch break, the winner will be announced. Remember a sack lunch.
2017 Winter Picnic THANK YOU to all who participated in this year s Winter Picnic on March 4. Everyone was busy and well fed! We d especially like to thank our teachers this year: Joyce Drenth, Gail Gregory, Kathy Isaacks, Marla Margelewski, Kevin Stankewicz, Sue Tapp, Sharon Terpstra, and Debbie Yates. Without you, we would not have had the success we had. Maria and Tomi Bee News In a beehive, bees share the sweetness of friendships as they work to get things done. If you would like to get involved in a bee, see Linda Wallin at the guild meeting, write her an , or give her a call. She will connect you to a 'beehive' in your area. You ll bee happy if you do. lwallin@dwna.net, Charity Projects If you are wondering where all of the fabric comes from that is used for charity projects, here is the answer. The fabric is mainly from two sources: 1) Guild members donate fabric 2) We periodically get s from people who have fabric to donate because they see on our website that we do charity projects. I contact them and arrange to pick up the fabric and sewing items. The various donations are combined, sorted and disbursed. Christmas fabrics typically go toward the stockings that Pat Flaherty coordinates. Smallish scraps go to the group collecting them for the quilt show. Childlike fabrics make kits for Project Linus quilts. Clothing type fabrics are offered to the folks making doll clothes for the quilt show doll. Most fabrics are used to create kits for hospice quilts. Upholstery or heavier fabrics are given to folks that make other things such as tote bags. So.. if you have a charity project that you are working on and can use fabric donations, please let me know what you need. At the Winter Picnic, one room was devoted to making Christmas stockings. Pat had them precut and ready for sewing. I m told that a good time was had by all. So far in 2017 Marne Chilstrom has dropped off thirty-nine quilts at Rainbow Hospice and another nine children s quilts for Project Linus. At each meeting members drop off more beautiful quilts and are able to pick up kits of either fabric or completed tops along with batting and backing. Please stop by the table at the next meeting and pick up one to finish and return. It is a great way to try out new quilting patterns! The need for charity quilts is unending. Please consider taking a kit home at the next meeting, and donating your time to finish it and bring it back. Thank you for all that you do, Deb Szott daszott1@comcast.net and Jonnie Staggs Charity Co Chair jonnie_staggs@yahoo.com Pat Flaherty is asking for donations of fleece, not scraps, but pieces large enough to be tied into quilts. Students at St. Viator High School in Arlington Heights are making quilts to be given to Mercy Hospital in the city. Call Pat
Our 2017 Raffle Quilt and Samantha Sell Raffle Tickets. We need everyone s help. These tickets will practically sell themselves! Stop by and see Valerie Kuster to pick up your packet of tickets. Our raffle quilt Snails in the Blueberry Patch is a clever two block two colors of blue quilt. Samantha is our doll, complete with a very large wardrobe and storage bed! Each member should consider selling a minimum $25.00 worth of tickets. The more tickets we sell the more $$$$ for our programs Quilt Show The Sweet Inspirations Quilt Show Committee has been hard at work preparing for this big event. We are entering April; the 6 month countdown to opening day has begun! Let's use the time now to make plans to finish up our projects. Some deadlines you'll want to put on the calendar are: June 17 Your entry into the Salt Water Taffy Guild Challenge is due. Janice Cronkright has come up with a sweet and simple little challenge for us. Let s see what you come up with! We'll be judging those at our Saturday, June 17 meeting. Find the rules in this newsletter. July 20 Show Entries forms are due at our July 20 meeting. Beginning at the April meeting, we'll have a camera ready to take a photo for you if you need help. Remember, each entry requires a color photo. You can find our Sweet Inspirations registration form on our website. Please enter your submission any time up until the July deadline. Make a Mini Collection for mini quilts has begun, and we are off to a good start. We ask that every person in the guild (180 + members) donate at least one for the sale. So far we have collected twenty-nine minis from ten members. If each of our members donates one mini, we would raise a lot of money to support our activities. If you need some inspiration, try pinterest.com and search miniature quilts. You will find lots of ideas and some free patterns. Guidelines for the mini are: maximum size is 18 inches, minimum size is 12 inches. It is better to use thin batting rather than thick batting. If your mini has a binding, single fold is best. A hanger is required: hanging sleeve, split sleeve or plastic rings. Please include a label with your first name and date. Volunteer Sign-up to work the show! Stop by the quilt show tables and talk to Beverley Enright, she'll get you signed-up for one of the many many shifts for the show (never too early to claim your preferred shift!).
Save those Scraps, UFO s and Books - Are you doing any spring cleaning? Save those scraps, UFO s and books and bring them to the guild meeting! Sally Schlatter is collecting books and UFO s. Susan Leverenz and Kathleen Haaker are collecting scraps. These donations turn into $$$ for our guild. Please be generous. Sponsor a Raffle Basket For the first time, we will be having a basket raffle. Please consider donating items to put in the baskets. Remember our theme, Sweet Inspirations, so jelly rolls, layer cakes or turnovers will be especially appropriate. The donated items should be new and in packaging. If you want to do more than donate one or two items, you may make up a basket on our own, with a group of friends, or with your bee. Have fun and choose a theme for your basket. Some good ideas are All that Glitters, Tools of the Trade, Black and White and Red all Over, or Tea for Two. Quilters have many ideas, so let your creativity show. Baskets have been donated, so bring your donations to the meetings. If you have any questions, contact Maria Ross nsqg.info@gmail.com or Kathy Isaacks kiquiltsmsn.com. Visit a Guild Jennifer Evans is coordinating our Quilt and Doll Travel, please stop by to sign up and take a road trip! Adopt a Shop! Nancy McAtee is coordinating locations to bring our advertising cards to area shops. Need some extra cash? Let us help make that sale with our Consignment Quilt Sale! Cindy Olsen is coordinating the sale of full size quilts on consignment. If you have a quilt you would like to sell, talk to Cindy. Thank you all for the wonderful work you are doing to make this Quilt Show a success. Keep it up. Together this sweet little show is coming to life! Your Quilt Show Chairs, Cathy Steiner cathy.steiner@sbcglobal.net Cindy Olsen cindyolsen61@gmail.com 2017 NSQG Quilt Challenge Sweet Inspirations Join the fun, the rules are simple. Challenge quilts will be featured at our 2017 Quilt Show. Judging will take place at our Saturday, June 17, meeting/sew-in. Check in the quilts between 9:00 10:00.
