Heidi Parkes Artist Statement In my work, I create a scaffolding of fabric, piecing, and quilting that allows me to reference many ideas on a single plane. The raw materials are textiles from domestic culture, fashion, family heirlooms, and scavenged prints. I integrate them with fabrics that I have embroidered, stained, dyed, or designed. These materials are pieced together to create the main imagery of the quilt, like a collage. This cloth is then beset with hand stitches, evocative of the slow process involved in construction, and functioning as a layer of drawing on the quilts surface. 2 Page 2 Board Positions Open Apprentice Wanted: Treasuer Do you have a little knowledge of Microsoft Home Office, and access to the software at home? Jim is looking for someone to learn the Treasurer s job and represent him at meetings when he is traveling this winter. You might even be interested in becoming the Guild s next Treasurer. Give Jim a call or send him an , or jkinwi@hotmail.com. It is pretty easy and will be greatly appreciated. Web Page Position: We will need a new person to take over the web page starting in April. You need a computer attached to the Internet. You do not need any special software as the software is already inbedded in the web page. The software Word Press is relatively easy to use and Nancy is willing to help a new person learn how to use it. Call or Nancy Ware if interested. ( or nware1953@gmail.com) Newsletter: We will need a new person to take over the newsletter starting in April. Nancy used Microsoft Publisher, but other people have used Microsoft Word. You really only need a word processor to create the newsletter. You do not have to be able to upload it to the web page. That was something we started to do with Jadine, but in the past the newsletter person would send the completed newsletter to the Webmaster and that person uploaded it to the web page. Either the newsletter person or webmaster has to keep the bulk mailing list. That would be up to those two people to determine who sends out the bulk s. Call or Nancy Ware if interested. 3 Upcoming February Program and Afternoon Workshop February 21 Pa Guest Speaker: Sara Lawson Owner and Designer at Sew Sweetness Guest speaker for February 21, 2018 is Sara Lawson of Chicago, IL, designer and owner of Sew Sweetness, a pattern company that features unique fabric bag and tote patterns for today's seamstresses. Her lecture will include information on her pattern line. She will also be bringing books and patterns for purchase. At the December holiday party, the pattern, Arabesque, was chosen for the workshop. Sara says this is one of her simpler designs and feels that the students should be able to complete their bag during the Wednesday afternoon workshop. (Cutting of pattern pieces must be completed before the workshop and steps 1 & 2 on the pattern instructions.) There are 2 ways you can obtain the FREE pattern for the "Arabesque." 1. By registering at Craftsy.com 2. By signing up for the class, your will be sent to Sara, who in turn will send you a PDF of the pattern. Class will be held after the morning lecture, and as stated above, should be completed on Wednesday. Fee for class is $30. Fabric requirement for this bag are 1.5 yards. You will also need; 1 2/3 yds. 20" Pellon SF 101 Shape Flex Interfacing 1/2 yd. Annie's Soft and Stable 14" zipper Thread Optional coordinating grosgrain ribbons in 5/8", 7/8", and 1 1/2"W. 18" long and 30" long for straps. You will also need your sewing machine, zipper foot, iron, pressing cloth, rotary cutter and mat, scissors, disappearing ink fabric marker, and turning tool. 4 In Memory of Roberta Williams Many NSQG members were able to attend the visitation and service for Roberta Williams. Roberta was an extremely gifted quilter and wonderful person. Her daughters displayed her quilts throughout the funeral home and the pews in the chapel were also draped with quilts. It was an incredible tribute to Roberta and I m sure she had a big smile on her face sharing her work. I was talking to one of her daughters and she jokingly said Roberta had piles of quilts in all of her closets so they had a hard time picking which ones to display. Many they had never seen. I think we can all relate to that! One of Roberta s daughters told Linn Woodard that Roberta meant to write a letter to the guild saying how much she d enjoyed her membership, how warm and welcoming everyone was and how much the friendships meant to her. A special thank you to the guild and any members who sent special cards her way over the past few months..it made her days brighter when she got that kind of mail. She never got a chance to write that letter.but her daughter wanted the guild to know. Page 4

5 Members in the News Schmitz Audubon Nature Center: Myra VanUxem has a one-woman show at the Schmitz Audubon Center in Bayside until the end of January. If you want to just see the quilts, you can tell the person at the ticket gate and they will let you in for free. The Audubon Center is at 1111 E. Brown Deer Road, Milwaukee, WI Hours are 9-5PM everyday. Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts: We have four members of NSQG in the current exhibit at the museum. The exhibit is the Third Biennale: Keeping Warm. Wisconsin ar sts have entered their handcra ed fiber artworks and the museum has selected, through a jury, the fiber arts media portraying the unified theme Wisconsin s winters are cold, but we know how to keep warm. The exhibit tle, Keeping Warm, is a playful look at the way we deal with the winter months - in practical and whimsical fashion. Our members selected for this exhibit are Terri Sankowitz, Judy Zoelzer Levine, Therese Chambers and Jane Walton. Our 2017 Raffle Quilt was also selected to be displayed in the foyer of the museum. The exhibit is open from December 7, 2017 March 11, Address is N50 W5050 Portland Rd, Cedarburg, WI. Museum hours Wednesday thru Saturday 10AM-4PM, Sunday Noon-4PM. Frank L. Weyenberg Library of Mequon-Thiensville: Marla Morris Kennedy has a one woman show at the Weyenberg Library. Her work will be on display from now until March. Address is N. Cedarburg Rd. Mequon, WI. Hours are 10-8 Monday Thursday and 10-6 Friday and Saturday. Love and Comfort Help We need one or two Love and Comfort Helpers to meet at the church to reorganize the fabric/bins/tops etc!! The church said it s fine if we come on Wednesday, February 7th about 10:00 until noonish. Trish, Mary Kay and I will be there but we could use one or two more people to make the task go quickly!
