While preparing for this last newsletter of 2018, time has slowed a bit. Even though we are in the midst of crafter and holiday-show frenzy, the daily pace has slowed with another snowfall and chilly evenings. What better time to work on gifts, last-minute or new, and what a grand time to reflect on the activities of the past year. Perhaps you have begun a new craft and suffered through the growing pains of trial and error, achievement and successes. Maybe you are working on projects--the gift of hands which hold the memory of stitches, paints, cloth or fibers. It is a time to share all the warmth this season brings, a time to share with others in any way that suits our beliefs and values. The board of the ABQ Fiber Arts Council wishes all a peaceful and prosperous end of year AND all the best that 2019 can bring. (And, don't forget that entries open for fiber Arts Fiesta 2019 on the 5th of January. The link will be OPEN and Working!!) May your holiday traditions only grow and bring shared peace and prosperity to others-- and to our younger generations of fiber artists! QuiltWorks adds SEW-DAY to regular calendar-- December 17 "We have been asked to add daytime sewing days to our calendar days when we can share the experience of sewing and quilting. During these days, we may sew on our own UFOs (unfinished objects), and perhaps also on charity quilts such as Quilts of Valor, quilts for kids in Title One programs, etc. We are dedicating the first and third Mondays of each month. Loom Dancer Odysseys Weaving in Canyon de Chelly April 22 - May 2, 2019 Mixed Media Textile Artists of NM was treated to a wonderful class and program presented by Libby Williamson, a mixed media textile artist from Villa Park, CA. 25 MMTA members participated in the class. Founding member, Donna Dixon, was the primary "Instigator" of the event. Sincere thanks are due to Libby, AFAC (guild scholarship) and Donna without whom the event would not have happened. A great time of learning and creating was had by all!

Shelly will talk about knitting sweaters & constructing your own garments, including getting off to a good start when making a sweater, hings to consider when choosing a pattern, different types of construction & some easy modifications to customize your sweater. And, put on your 2019 calendar Spiders Market - Silent Auction and Reception: 5 to 7 PM. Arts Alive!, a brand-new self-guided monthly event held its inaugural soft opening on November 30th. Beginning in January, 2019, Arts Alive! will be held on the last Friday of every month. Where: 30 minutes from ABQ and 10 minutes from Rio Rancho on SR 448, Corrales Road. Look for the colored blinking lights and starbursts as you travel along Corrales Road. Shop a bazaar featuring Native artists selling handcrafted clay ornaments, Nativity sets, jewelry, art, and gifts. Meanwhile, kids will have fun with holiday arts and crafts. At day s end, enjoy a special nighttime Native dance while sipping hot cocoa beside the bonfire or strolling among hundreds of luminarias. Free for members, or with museum admission. Bits and Bobs and in-betweens... (just a couple this month...) **************** The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science Exhibit through January 4, 2019 Picturing the Past of Paleo Art An exhibit of "art of prehistoric images" seven pieces of fiber Check out a tapestry weaving by Elizabeth Buckley, three quilts by Sally Williams (both from Albuquerque) and three pieces of paper (Including a huge trilobite!) from a woman from Colorado (I think). The exhibit is included in the museum entrance fee. There will be classes from New Mexico s Master Spinner, Sharon Ewing, New Mexico s preeminent natural dyer, Ric Rao, crochet with Kim Willis, weaving with Myra Thompson, and knitting with Jeannie Fagerstrom, and more! Mandala making from 10:30am-12:30pm Storytelling from 12:30pm-2:00pm The Solstice Seed Mandala creation is an annual community art-making event to celebrate the coming of the winter season. We will gather for the creation of a Mandala using different kinds of grains and seeds. The seeds of the mandala serve to feed migratory songbirds and the mandala remains in place for about a week. Participants contribute to the design and help to build the Mandala. A mandala is...an integrated structure; organized around a unifying center; Longchenpa.
