I have been a girl on the go since our last publication and it has been all about quilting! Early May saw me touring the guilt shops and mountains of WV with Virginia S., culminating in a quilting retreat at Blackwater Falls State Park. We had a wonderful time even though Spring was very late arriving in the mountains. I was home just long enough to unpack and do my laundry and repack for a great Spring into Summer QSC retreat at White Oak. In mid-june Virginia and I traveled to Westminster, SC for a private retreat and we also enjoyed driving around to see waterfalls and other sights. The Fourth of July weekend my hubby and I did another trip to WV for his 50 th high school reunion. I made it a quilty trip for me by visiting some longarm quilters that I had met through Facebook. And later in July I flew off to Kalispell, Montana and a Judy Neimeyer retreat on beautiful Flathead Lake. The views were spectacular the retreat house sits up on a hill overlooking the lake which is surrounded by mountains. It was hard to sew! But sew I did and I also made new quilting friends from all over the country. That is my favorite thing about going on retreats getting to meet new quilters and making new friends. As we head into Fall I am getting ever more excited about our upcoming Pieceable Retreat in October. For the most part, our foray into online registration went quite well. We know there were some problems and we are working with Constant Contact to get those ironed out before next year. Pieceable Retreat 2014 is going to be just fantastic. We will be celebrating out 20th year with some special goodies and some surprises!! I hope you are working on my final President s Challenge: Smiling Faces...Beautiful Places Quilting across SC. Your piece should measure 24 by 36 in either landscape or portrait orientation and depict what is special to you about South Carolina, QSC, and quilting. We will display the challenge pieces at Pieceable Retreat and then make the display available to quilt guilds around the state for display. By the way.before I see you at Pieceable Retreat I will have traveled to Florida for another retreat and back to West Virginia for the first wedding in my family. And yes, I did a quilt for the happy couple. In fact I did TWO!! Happy Quilting from your traveling President! Karen Mark Your Calendars. 2 2014 Pieceable Retreat Oct I hope you are looking forward to another fun weekend at White Oak Conference Center. QSC is so happy to be able to provide such an enjoyable, affordable event for everyone. I am excited about the new teachers we have this year; Debi Bacon, Teresa Pietras, Heather Tighe, and Cheryl Keith. We have some teachers who have taken a rest from teaching for a few years an there are some veteran, proven teachers retreat wouldn t be complete without. There is a good mix of traditional and modern techniques and designs along with mixed media and surface design. I think there is something for everyone. Vendors will open at 10am on Friday morning for those early arrivers. It will be so much fun to welcome new comers and see old friends again. Be on the lookout for first time retreat attendees and answer any questions they may have. QSC board members will be on hand to direct and assist you to your classrooms. Registration opens at 11:00 am in the lobby of the Classroom Building. You can then go to the White Oak Administration desk to pick up your room keys and meal tickets. PLEASE do not leave your car parked in the circle in front of this area unless you are in a parking space. This area is patrolled by State Troopers and we cannot block the NO PARKING areas for even one minute. A parking ticket is no way to begin your fall retreat. Be sure to wear your official fall retreat name tag at all times. Only QSC members with confirmed registration are allowed on the campus. If you are not registered for fall retreat you cannot come to White Oak just to shop with the vendors. Thanks for helping us honor our contract. also tell you where class rooms are located and the schedule for the weekend. The HUB café will be open after evening meetings for your snacking needs. You may also get ice there. It s hard to believe that Pieceable Retreat is just a few weeks away. I m looking forward to another great time with some of my favorite people quilters! If you have any questions, feel free to me at lbaker@comporium.net. Lynn Baker, Pieceable Retreat Chair 2014 Pieceable Retreat Registration The first annual online registration for Fall Retreat was a great success. As usual, the Retreat committee brought together a wonderful collection of teachers and classes! With more than 150 registrations in the first thirty minutes Retreaters were able to sign up for classes as well as their room choice with little or no problems. We did experience a few hiccups but these were handled with great efficiency by our registrar and any person who needed help registering were walked through the process until success was achieved! If you missed registration this year, plan to join us next year! Darlene Roberts, Registrar When you see Darlene Roberts, be sure to give her a pat on the back and tell her what a great job she did handling registration. It s quite a task and she does it with such grace and patience! Please thank both Darlene and Donna Royson and congratulate them on their hard work coordinating registration online. Once again Mary Carlton, Licensed Massage Therapist will be offering chair massages for $1.00 per minute for minute sessions. This will feel good after sitting in a chair sewing for umpteen hours! Look for the poster when you pick up your registration packet and sign up. We will be using all available classrooms for classes. Signs will be posted to direct you to where you need to go. Your retreat booklet, inside your registration packet will Page 2

6 Landrum Quilters, Landrum We are coordinating an August 16 Airing of the Quilts in downtown in cooperation with the City of Landrum and the Landrum Area Business Association. The Airing is one of Landrum's Third Saturday Morning special summer events. A team from LQ works, on behalf of the City of Landrum, with those sponsoring quilt blocks for the Foothills Quilt Trail in Landrum. To date, 24 blocks are hanging on buildings in the city limits. The 25th, School House, sponsored by LQ, is installed at the Gowensville Community Center (a former school) where the quilt club meets. Program chairs Sybil Radius and Diane Hollis have presented two excellent programs this spring: one on creative uses of 2 1/2 inch strips to make quick quilts and the second, Christmas in July, on combining mug rugs with inexpensive items for thoughtful holiday gifts. The club's biennial quilt show is set for June 11-13, 2015 at Landrum Middle School. More information will be announced at DISTRICT 3 ABBEVILLE, AIKEN, EDGEFIELD, GREENWOOD, LAURENS, MCCORMICK, NEWBERRY, SALUDA Susan Congdon, Aiken swirlc@bellsouth.net (803) Note: All the District III guilds have been challenged to come up with a door prize donation for Pieceable Retreat. It was suggested that they use their guild name as a theme for their prize. These creative quilters are sure to come through with some fun ideas Carolina Pine Quilters, Aiken Guild members recently made drawstring bags from fat quarters and stuffed them with toiletries that were then donated to the Cumbee Center for Abused Persons. They were much appreciated. A recent meeting focused on bindings, borders and other finishing techniques. These are the areas that quilt judges often suggest improving. Future programs include a placemat challenge for Meals on Wheels, an art quilt trunk show from SAQA and preparing for the annual quilt show at the Aiken County Historical Museum in November. The Berry Patchers, Newberry Could you come up with a quilt block for every letter of the alphabet? This group has been working on a new letter each month and has managed to find one for each letter. Other projects are sock monkeys and a pincushion challenge issued by Sharon Golden. The Emerald City Quilters, Greenwood MaryJo's was the destination for this group's latest field trip along with a stop at Sew Much Fun quilt shop. They are getting ready for their third annual retreat in Tennessee in August. Two projects for the retreat are the Stitch and Slice Scallops jelly roll quilt by Jenny Doan (as seen on Fons and Porter Love of Quilting), and the quilted pot holder for bowls that was demonstrated at the QSC spring meeting. Loose Threads Quilting Guild, Clinton The June meeting was a barbeque held at the home of Betsi Dinger. The program, presented by Betsi, was a bed turning. Quilts, wall hangings, table runners and flimsies were viewed. Lynn Parker was the guest in July, presenting a lecture on Color Values. August will be Susan Fiero with her lecture on creative backings. Members continue to make quilts for Butterfly Ministries. These quilts are given, along with dolls, to girls in foster care. Pieceful Hearts Quilters, N Augusta In September the guild welcomes back former member, Tonya Ricucci, author of Word Play. She will be presenting a trunk show of her Unruly Quilts as well as teaching two workshops. They are also looking forward to a workshop by Marilyn Wall and a miniature double wedding ring class by Linda Yehle. DISTRICT 4 CALHOUN, FAIRFIELD, KERSHAW, LEXINGTON, ORANGEBURG, RICHLAND Margaret Caughman, Leesville quiltedapron@aol.com (803) Devine Quilters, Columbia In June, representatives from the 3 charities we support came and talked about the use of the quilts we donate. In July, members Beth Karr, Judy Carrol and Nancy Adylet conducted 20 minute round robin quilting tip. We hosted the Quilters Gallery (Pizza Ladies) in August with a trunk show and sale. Member Pat Whittle taught an appliqué class to us on a Saturday in August. Every Thursday Quilters We are doing a BOM with the Women of influence series. Several members attended Knitting & Quilting Expo at Jamil Temple, and the AQS quilt show in Charlotte. Greater Columbia Quilters, Columbia Page 6

7 In August, we have nationally known quilter, Joan Derylak, teaching us her Batik Blues jacket and also showing us how to fit the perfect jacket to our particular bodies. September is our annual fundraiser and Silent Auction. Anyone who would like to come and shop, we will always welcome you with open arms. October is Author Marie Bostwick who will be lecturing and signing any of her best-selling books that anyone would like to have autographed. We will also have some of her novels for sale on that day. Threads of Time, Lexington We continue to grow and have 112 members. We encourage continued learning through programs and classes, demos by members to members and even bus trips to quilt shows. We incorporated The Good of the Order into our monthly agenda to call out what members see as good that we as a Guild are doing. We try to know each other so we can support and help in good times and bad. Members have dealt with terrible losses but, with the help of friends, realize they are not alone. To see the infectiousness of kindness is an amazing thing! For example, an Elf started leaving gifts and surprises for members. More and more people have been visited by the Elf. Many are living the pay it forward principle, helping others, not for what they will get in return but because it s the next right thing to do. And it appears to be contagious. Yes, we share love of quilting and that spills over into all aspects of our lives. We have fun and we look forward to the next new members who walk through our doors. Lake Marion Piecemakers First my apology to Dee Doebler, my computer incorrectly printed "Directions" for title of her pattern and this was listed in the Summer Newsletter. The correct name is "Reflections". We are rolling along with appliqué practice and in August will decide on our personal pattern since some members may want a short project and others may want a larger project. We had our Charity Blitz -- layering quilt tops, constructing tops and had a good old sew fest. Many members have been assisting in binding QOV quilts to help Annie Mixon (QOV) with completion so they may be awarded to worthy individuals Logan Lap Quilters, Columbia Our annual auction in June to raise money for the guild was a huge success! Thanks to Jane Gold, our auctioneer. Tommy Leightner gave a humorous talk in July on keeping our machines serviced. In August, a physical therapist gave us tips on keeping ourselves in shape while sewing. Also, our Hole in the Wall (Quilt in a Day Pattern) quilts made form a class taught by Donna Royson in May were revealed. See pictures under Hole in the Wall Gang. Orangeburg Quilt Guild, Orangeburg In May some of the guild volunteered to put binding on QOV s. Barbara Simmons did a program on split hole-inthe-barn- door block. Info found at Missouri Star Quilts. In June, Pat Bartholomew did a program on a Featherweight tote. Harriett Longo won the draw blocks for that quarter. July, Deni Quay did a woven snowflake ornament that weaves 2 fabrics together. This was fun. Just google woven snowflake ornament to find patterns. Many of us went to the Jamil Temple shop hop in June. Starlight Quilters June 3, 2014 we started our Round Robin Quilt Square and will continue this for three months. June 17, 2014 we had a workday for QOV presentation cases as our project for the month. As a group we completed 57 presentation cases and created 30 additional presentation case kits to be sewn. July 15, 2014 Starlight Quilters had a Stained Glass class where we learned a lot about stained glass and our teacher made us kits that represented our Star as our project. This was a lot of fun. We will continue our Round Robin Quilt Square this month also. August will be our last month for the Round Robin Quilt Square. We are also planning a Quilt Show for The Oaks here in Orangeburg. This show will take place on August 25, 2014 from 2pm 4 pm. DISTRCT 5 CHESTERFIELD, CLARENDON, DARLINGTON, DILLON, FLORENCE, GEORGETOWN, HORRY, LEE, MARION, MARLBORO, SUMTER, WILLIAMSBURG Karen Kirkland, Florence kirklandks@aol.com (843) Coastal Carolina Quilters, Surfside Beach CCQ got a double shot of eye candy with two trunks shows in May. The first one was works by quilter B.J. Titus, a Coatesville, Pa. award winning quilt artist. B.J. s appliqué quilts are recognizable by use of brilliant color and extensive thread embellishments. The second show was works by one of our members, Diane Wyte. Diane was on the Jenny Beyer staff for a number of years. Diane had an array of wearables as well as quilts to show us. Both displays were a sight to see. Award winning longarm quilter and teacher, Karen Kendo came to our guild in Page 7

8 June. Karen showed a number of her award winning quilts and after the meeting held a session on How To Listen To Your Quilt. For those that participated, Karen discussed different levels and styles of machine quilting. In July sewing machines and sergers were just humming along. We held our first of two summer charity workshops. We layered and sewed about 60 baby quilts for Family Outreach of Horry, serged and corded 375 bead bags for MUSC s Children s Hospital, serged flag bags for QOV and made some centerpieces for Meet the Quilters. At our August meeting we hope to finish up our projects. Little River Quilters - Little River Even with summer being such a busy time, we have had great classes presented by our members. Nancy Horsley gave us a class constructing an iron caddy that doubles as a pressing pad, great for classes. Margo Woolard taught us a new way to do borders, this great idea will save much time and energy. We had no meeting in July, however we are picking up in August with Julie Comtois leading the class in making a Mondo Tote, available in three sizes. Swamp Fox Quilters, Florence We meet twice a month at John Calvin Presbyterian Church in Florence. The first and third Thursday of the month at 9:30 am. Our community service projects for this year include children's quilts for Durant Children's Center, quilts for shut-ins for the Florence Senior Citizen Association and pillowcases for McLeod Children's Hospital and Hospice. in June we had our annual challenge show at the Hartsville Museum. The exhibit of the challenge quilts will run through August. In August we had a show and tell of our UFO challenge followed by brunch and lots of talk about which class everyone is taking at the QSC fall retreat! Grand Strand Quilters, Myrtle Beach The Grand Strand Quilters have been very busy this past quarter. Some of us are learning to create an underwater embroidery/beading scene with Bev Clement; making bags with Valerie Ineichen and Laura Tobin, and learning how to make chenille and smocking with Darla Harlacher. We have enjoyed going out to lunch at various area restaurants plus making back packs for Fostering Hope and working on pillow cases and quilt tops for Quilts of Valor. In addition to being exposed to all those techniques we always enjoy working on our own projects and just chatting with our friends at guild Swan Lake, Sumter The ladies of the Swan Lake Quilt Guild are making quilts for residents of the Community Residential Facility on Broad Street in Sumter. Many of the 20 male and female residents in this nursing home suffer from psychiatric disabilities and are low to no income. The facility is old, but clean, and the residents are usually placed there after being hospitalized with nowhere else to stay. The quilts will be placed on twin beds and will measure at least 50 x 70. They will be presented to the residents between Thanksgiving and Christmas at a small party. Since we longer need as many quilts for the kids of DSS as we have in the past, we will be supporting this group as well. Hooks and Needles, Conway The Hooks and Needles Guild, a ministry of the Catholic Church of St. James in Conway, continues to assist charities in the local area, making mug rugs for Meals on Wheels, incubator covers for area hospitals, quilts, afghans, socks, hats, and baby items for Horry County Battered Women and Children Shelter, Fostering Hope, Catholic Charities, and Kingston Nursing Home. The group has 15 members who will continue to serve needs in the Conway area. Upcoming meetings include demonstrations of the "stack and whack" procedure and making pillowcases. Conway Guild, Conway Since January of this year, we have welcomed 12 new members. This year we have been making a block a month (plus a bonus block each month) with the ultimate goal of creating a Sampler quilt. Our group is made up of half experienced quilters, and the others new to sewing/quilting, so this sampler quilt is the first quilt for many of our members! Each month a new technique or tip is reviewed. From the first of the year we have been busy with two charitable projects. We have made and given 93 Quiltlets to the Birth Place at Conway Medical Center! We keep a box filled with Quiltlet kits made up of squares, backing, batting and a quilt label designed by one of our members! We made a pledge earlier this year to Karen Kendo to supply 25 pillow cases to QOV each quarter. We have been working with the local Reg.8 QOV, and are happy to report that as of July we have donated 109 cases. Also, 32 blocks to a national QOV project, and 14 blocks to the local QOV! Several of our members have led "make & take" projects at each morning session of guild day. Projects included quilt block envelopes, thread catchers, snap bags, pillow cases, and microwave bowl pot holders. Learning sessions on rotary cutting, measuring, how to read and use block rulers, appliqués, how to use different sewing machine feet on different projects. Going forward, we have a few more projects in the works, and will be finishing our Sampler Quilts! Looking forward to a very productive fall! Page 8
