I can t say any more about the meeting right now because I m writing this a month ahead of the meeting to meet the newsletter deadline. And that is the point of my message to our membership for this newsletter edition. Our current format of a quarterly newsletter does not allow us to get information to all of you in a timely fashion. But asking our wonderful VOLUNTEER newsletter editors to compile and publish a monthly printed newsletter is simply asking too much. In addition, printing and mailing costs have sky-rocketed over the past few years. Thus it is time for QSC to enter the age of electronic dissemination of information. During this year we will be moving to electronic information that you will receive monthly by , and a regular newsletter quarterly by . Your will be protected and will not be able to be captured and given/sold to other entities. You will be able to get information that is more current and up-to-date. We will be able to include color pictures and patterns, provide links directly to websites, and other types of information that we could not do via print and postal mailing. This will also give us the capability to send out, when warranted, a quick , to all members that have , with any important news (such as a hurricane impacting on a meeting/retreat). This decision also moves QSC in the going green direction as it will save on paper usage. The board has had this decision under consideration for quite some time but after receiving our budget report we knew this had to happen sooner rather than later. For those of you without you will continue to receive a quarterly printed newsletter that will be a compilation of the three months in that quarter. We will be in touch soon with our advertisers to explain how we will now handle ads. It s a change and I know change can be difficult. Please be open to this change and realize that the benefits outweigh the disadvantages and that we are trying to keep our budget so that we do not need to raise dues. Whenever you renew your membership be sure to include your current address on the membership form. Looking forward to another great year of quilting with QSC! 2 Modern Quilt ARTworks in Beaufort SC, April-May 2013 The Modern quilt is simple, uncomplicated and contemporary. The Beaufort Modern Quilt Guild is 24 members who strive to achieve and build on this aesthetic. They are having their first exhibition in the gallery at ARTworks in Beaufort Town Center in April and May. The gallery is free to browse Tuesdays through Saturdays and special events, including a panel discussion on Saturday, April 6 at 4pm, about Modern vs. Traditional and a reception on Saturday, May 4, 6-8pm, open to the public. "We'll have about 30 pieces that show how Modern quilters work," said Rhonda Jordan, who owns Tabby Fabric & Studio, where the Beaufort Guild meets. "We've invited the Charleston and Greenville Guilds too, so the public will see a fantastic range of new designs. Modern quilters don't follow patterns so much. They embrace asymmetry and negative space, not just rigid prints and structures. Machine-sewn binding is fine. The show isn't a competition, but our way of displaying what quilting means here and now." Some quilts and related creations will be for sale. For more about the Guild, contact Jordan at Trivia Questions 1. Coarsness of your fabric has no impact on your selection of a needle. True or False. 2. A dream described in Genesis 28:10-16 gives rise to what quilt block pattern? 3. Amish quilts are traditionally quilted using what color thread? 4. ARTworks' gallery is surrounded by artists working in their studios, a black box theater, and the BIG Story Fest from April 11 through the 14. ARTworks is the community arts center of Beaufort, the coolest arts council in the Carolinas, and applies the many creative tools of The Arts to strengthen artists, and enrich audiences, collectors, and visitors through high quality arts experiences and arts education programs 365 days a year. 3 Mark your calendars! QSC Fall Retreat plans are underway! October 18 20, 2013 I joined Quilters of South Carolina in 2007, at the urging of some of my guild members, so that I could go to the Spring Meeting. I was completely wowed by Lura Schwartz-Smith. Her internationally award winning quilts brought to life the images of ballet dancers and other interesting characters enjoying their everyday activities. I couldn t believe someone could make fabric appear to bend and sway, giving movement to the subjects in her amazing works of art. I couldn t believe art work crafted with fabric could look so much like a photograph. I was forever sucked into the world of quilting. I love the traditional look of a well pieced quilt and the incredible presence of fiber arts incorporated in the quilting process. QSC is a wonderful organization that promotes this incredible art of quilting. I felt welcomed into the fold, if you will, as a new member. I enjoyed talking to some young ladies at our last fall retreat, who were there for the first time. They expressed how welcomed they felt as well, not to mention what a great time they had. It is time to welcome some more new members! I hope you are talking about QSC, Spring Meeting and especially Fall Retreat to members of your individual guilds. The chilly winter season will soon come to an end, making room for all things new. As quilters, we think new fabrics, new patterns, new threads, new projects and so much more! QSC has so many talented, creative teachers, and they have great plans to satisfy your sewing and quilting palettes. First of all, a great big thank you to Anita Bowen, who laid the ground work for a well-organized, smooth running event. All I had to do, literally, was fill in the blanks, change some dates, and recruit teachers and helpers. By now you will have seen the samples revealed at our Spring Meeting, held in Hilton Head. Pictures will again be posted on the WEB site for all to see. Registration packets will be mailed out by April 17, Returned registration with payment and roommate designation cannot be post marked before Wednesday, May 1, We want to make sure that everyone receives the packets and has a chance to select classes and choose your roommates. I have two BIG requests; #1. Do not send your packets with signature required. #2. Please be sure you have the correct postage when you return your registration information. This will make the registration process much smoother. There are a limited number of single and handicapped rooms, and doubles. The group house will be available. Triple and/or quadruple room accommodations in Murphy rooms will only be made available at the request of roommates and because of this, the number of registrations will need to be limited to the first 290 received. Murphy style rooms will be used for double occupancy. Should more members request triples and quad sleeping arrangements, we can increase registration numbers. We will not be making that housing decision for you. Pricing for lodging, meals, facilities, instruction and administrative expenses will be the same. Single room will be $260.00; double, triple or quadruples will be $ per person and the Group House with up to 4 per bedroom will be $ per person. The board works diligently to offer you a quality event at a very reasonable and affordable cost. I am so excited to be part of Pieceable Retreat. Please mark your calendars, plans are in the making! Come get inspired, come ready to learn, come ready to have another memorable experience. ** If anyone has questions, do not hesitate to me at baker@comporium.net or call Until retreat, Lynn Baker, Pieceable retreat Chair Interviews with 2012 State Fair QSC Award Winners Each year at the SC State Fair QSC awards three special ribbons. This year the awards went to: Award Judge s Recognition Best Quilting Stitch Best use of Color Winner Ruth Smith, Florence Teressa Kennemore, Saluda Jane Johnson, Greenville Each winner received a special QSC Ribbon, a premium award, and one year membership in QSC. We asked each of the winners to share some of their thoughts and quilting experience with the membership. We will be Page 3

4 featuring their responses in this and upcoming newsletters. When did you begin quilting? Ruth Smith: My first quilt was in 1981 for my parents 50 th wedding anniversary. I had never quilted or taken a class. I designed and appliqued a family tree, large gold intertwining rings and other things from their past. Mom thought it was beautiful and hung it at their party. I look at it now and can see all kinds of mistakes. But I was hooked on quilting from then on. Teressa Kennemore: I would like to say that is was many years ago when I would sleep under my grandmother s quilts made from feed sacks and old clothes. My love for quilts did begin there, but it was not until 35 years ago when my first child was born that I did make a few quilts for my daughters and a few for close friends. My quilting escalated when I knew that I was going to become a grandmother. That first grandchild had to have her own quilt. Not just that quilt but one that her grandmother made. That was fourteen years ago and with ten grandchildren there has been plenty of practice. Jane Johnson: I learned to quilt in 1995 in Summerville, SC when I opened a small craft and gift store in the same building as People, Places, and Quilts. They were patient with me as I explored my interest in fabrics and techniques. I took a beginning quilters class and never looked back! That was about 15 years ago. What is your favorite quilting technique? Ruth Smith: I love bargello patterns and the stack and whack. I do a lot of pieced quilts. I love to play with shading, especially using batiks. Really I just love to quilt anything that looks unique. Teressa Kennemore: This question is the hardest to answer. I have done it all: piecing, paper piecing, English paper piecing, hand and machine applique. The technique I use the most is piecing from patterns that I have been inspired to design. This begins with a thumbnail sketch to a drafted pattern, then cut from fabric and sewn into a quilt. Thank you Ruth, Teressa, and Jane for sharing with us. We look forward to learning more about you in our next newsletter. Scholarship Funds Many of you are aware and all of you should be aware that QSC offers scholarships to Spring Meeting and to Pieceable Retreat. Scholarships may be obtained simply by writing to the current President and stating your need/circumstances and what you are doing or have done to promote quilting for your guild or for QSC or to provide quilts for others. Over the past few years as the economy has continued to impact many of us and our pocketbooks, you can well imagine that scholarship requests have increased in number and that is the case. So far all requests have been met up until last year when the number increased so rapidly that we put an upper limit on how many we can give for one event. Our funds for granting scholarships do not come from the general fund but from the scholarship funds. Those monies are derived from sales of tickets on our annual scholarship quilt and from donations from members or memorials from family and friends of QSC members who have passed away. Those funds are now getting pretty low. So this is a call to all of you to help us continue to be able to award scholarships. There are a number of ways you can help. Buy some tickets on the next scholarship quilt it s a wonderful miniature work of art by our very talented Amanda Brown. Send a donation to the scholarship fund in honor or memory of a beloved quilter or just a donation. Thanks to all of you for helping out! Karen Kendo President Jane Johnson: I love to hand quilt and my fingers itch to complete a top once it is done. However I don t have the time to hand quilt every one. I love to piece, am not friendly with applique, and would love to learn foundation piecing. I have recently discovered bargello quilts and batiks a wonderful combination! Page 4

5 President s New Challenge Announced! First I want to give a great big from the bottom of my heart thank you to all who made the many, many beautiful quilts for the Children s Hospitals. The response was absolutely overwhelming and much appreciated by all who received a comfort quilt. And now we need to have a new focus for our charitable efforts and I am asking you to consider making quilts for our past and present military heroes by supporting Quilts of Valor ( for the next two years. At our Spring Meeting in Hilton Head in February, the QOV state chapter leader spoke to the members present about Quilts of Valor at my request. I am hoping that we can respond to this challenge in the same manner we responded to Covering SC Kids. 1 st QOV Quilt Presented! What a great happenstance at the Spring meeting on February 23 rd! Two young soldiers and their families were at the same hotel and Karen Kendo was able to present them with the first QOV quilt turned in to QSC. Since Covering SC Kids quilts were also available, their two young kids were also presented with a quilt. What a truly emotional and uplifting event this was. A standing ovation greeted the soldiers as they entered the room and moist eyes as they exited! We are planning some special activities to support this effort one such will take place at Pieceable Retreat so keep your eyes and ears pealed to learn more about this when you receive your registration packet. We are hoping that districts will sponsor some QOV sew-ins and we also hope to have a state-wide event. There are many ways you can support this challenge. Make a QOV quilt. Use good quality 100% cotton fabrics (patriotic or fabrics appropriate for an adult male or female). The quilt should be no smaller than 55 by 65 and no larger than 72 by 90. Quilt it yourself or send it to a longarm quilter, then bind it (hand stitched to back) and bring it to either Pieceable Retreat 2013 or Spring Meeting Make blocks for a QOV quilt and bring them to Pieceable Retreat 2013 for another volunteer to turn into a quilt. Volunteer to turn donated blocks into a quilt top. This can be done by an individual or a group. If you have a longarm machine volunteer to quilt for our QOV Challenge. A list of quilting volunteers will be collected and posted on the website. If you want to be included please me at k.kendo@yahoo.com. From L-R - Karen Kendo; Diane Sala; Faith, Landon & Sgt Nick Lyle: Zoe & PFC Alex Manceaux I am excited about this challenge and hope you will be also. If you have any ideas for it please contact me. For much more information about Quilts of Valor, what they do and how, and free patterns for making QOV quilts, visit their website at Karen Kendo,President, QSC Page 5

6 Exhibit of South Carolina Quilts In 2013, the American Quilt Study Group will hold their annual seminar from September 19 to 22 at the Francis Marion Hotel in Charleston, SC. For the two days preceding and the day following the paper presentation at seminar weekend, there will be tours, study centers, silent auctions, book sales and exhibits. The purpose of the group, which is based in Lincoln, Nebraska, is to develop a responsible and accurate body of information about quilts and their makers. The normal level of attendance at the annual seminar is about 300 people. The 2013 Seminar is being hosted by Quilters of South Carolina and Cobblestone Quilters. I am co-chair of the seminar, together with Laurel Horton. We have been asked to put on an exhibit of local quilts. I am looking for old and some exceptional, new quilts made in South Carolina to put in this exhibit. The quilts should have some provenance and be representative of their maker s local area e.g. Dutch Fork. The total number required is around 15-25, depending on the space allocated to this exhibit in the Francis Marion Hotel. Ideally, I would like to have two or three quilts from each region in Quilters of South Carolina. Please contact me at chrisquilts@mac.com or if you know of a suitable quilt. I will need a photograph, age and size of the quilt together with owners contact information (and makers name, if possible). Please indicate if the quilt has a hanging sleeve or not. The quilts will not be needed until next September and will not be chosen until after the AQSG site visit in March Thanks for your participation. 8 2013 Spring Meeting Lets Make Waves - Highlights By Donna Royson The Spring meeting was held on February 23 at the Mariott Hotel in Hilton Head Island, SC. Kudos to Dianne Sala, Robin Cleveland and the local guild members of District 6 who did an outstanding job organizing this event! I wish space would permit naming them all individually in this article. These members prepared goodie bags for everyone including a crazy quilt broach, flip flop needle holder, and coupon for a handmade article. These handmade articles ranged from book covers (book included), pin cushions, jewelry bags, to bookmarks. They were absolutely beautiful and all reflected the beach theme. Table decorations included a sand bucket with a towel containing a paper pieced fish and a fabric umbrella! President Karen Kendo moderated the meeting at which many wonderful topics were discussed such as election of officers, a by-law change to allow out-of-state vendors to have booths at Fall and Spring meetings, accepted quilts for the Covering SC Kids challenge, gave door prizes, introduced teachers for Fall Retreat, heard a presentation from Annie Mixon, Quilts of Valor SC Representative, presented a quilt of valor to a soldier (see article on pg 5), discussed future electronic distribution of this newsletter, heard details about Spring meeting 2014, and had show & Tell. Lunch was a delicious plated meal served by the hotel. District 6 members demonstrated the following at separate tables: X s and O s quilting technique. See Charm square tote bag Padded bracelet using strip cut from soda bottle Layer Cake stack & whack The highlight of the meeting was a presentation by Quilt Artist Carol Taylor. Carol explained she has been quilting since 1993 and showed us a pictorial presentation of the history of her quilt-making and then a trunk show of quilts she has made. After the presentation, Carol spent time with members as they perused the quilts from her show. Although the following pictures do not do the meeting justice, I hope that those of you who missed the meeting will enjoy viewing them. Carol Taylor presentation, booth sales, and Quilts displayed. December was a catered luncheon with guests from the Swamp Fox Quilters in Florence who showed a wonderful array of their quilts, challenges and other items they make at their guild. We had a gift exchange and played a game using fat quarters. The lucky ones got to take home a bundle of fabric. In January we had a flea market. Lots of items were bought and sold. We also had 29 quilts on display for our Crayon Challenge. The challenge was to choose a crayon color and make a quilt predominately using that color. The members voted on the best use of their crayon color and creativity. The top 3 quilts received prizes. Most of the quilts were then donated to our charities. Swamp Fox Quilters, Florence In December we held our annual Christmas potluck and presented our community quilts to representatives from the Pee Dee coalition and the Florence Senior Citizen Association. Our January program was presented by quilt artist Dottie Moore and included a trunk show of her beautiful quilts and a wonderful discussion of her journey in quilting. Little River Quilters - Little River In January, Heather Tighe of Quilting Concepts, taught free motion quilting. Many techniques were learned and the ones of us that could never "do" it before were successful because of her instructions. Debbie Bermer also taught a class in luggage tag construction. We have expanded our meeting days to include the third Friday of the month from 10:30 3 for free sewing, room to sandwich quilts, and help for the beginner quilter. In February, Joyce Wagner, member, will conduct a class on hand appliqué, Joyce has won prizes for her hand appliqué quilts at local quilt shows. Our membership now has grown to 51 quilters. Peaceful Piecemakers Had a Christmas dinner, at one of the members home, at which we drew names and exchanged handmade gifts. We made receiving blankets, mission bags and cross quilts for a mission trip in March. We also made blankets for our local homeless mission. Two of our members, Belinda Bonnoitt and Ann Holland attended the Fall retreat for the first time and hope to return in Oct DISTRICT 6 ALLENDALE, BAMBERG, BARNWELL, BEAUFORT, COLLETON, HAMPTON, AND JASPER COUNTIES Robin Cleveland, Hilton Head Island robinhhi@roadrunner.com, (843) Low Country Scrap Quilters, Walterboro Page 12

13 The guild made caps, hats, and bosom pillows for cancer patients in Several workdays were held in October (Breast Cancer Awareness month). 75 items were taken to Keyserling Cancer Center in Beaufort. This trip also included a stop at the local quilt shop and lunch. Karen Kendo gave a very informative presentation with pointers on quilting, and display of her many sample quilts. We are currently planning projects for our 2 nd annual Quilt Exhibit in the Fall of Sea Island Quilters, Beaufort A list of workshops given by teachers from various states and our own members was presented, This is also the year of our semi-annual quilt show to be held at the Brown Neighborhood Center, Greene and Craven Streets, Beaufort, on Friday and Saturday, May 3 & 4. Join us in viewing over 150 quilts which will be on display and visit vendor booths. Along with finishing quilts for the show, at our February meeting we presented annual Challenge Quilts. We have the year to consider our design but most of us still seem to procrastinate until the last minute. This year we must feature at least two men s silk ties in our entry. DISTRICT 7 BERKELEY, CHARLESTON, AND DORCHESTER COUNTIES Sheila Moore, Summerville Smoore1320@yahoo.com, (843) Island Quilters Guild, Charleston Just finished helping Kings Daughters of Edisto Island complete a quilt for their annual craft show. Proceeds help the needy of Edisto Is. We are involved in two community service projects - My Sister s House and Patriots Point (a nursing home for vets who cannot go home). Cobblestone Quilters, Charleston Community service projects for this year are pillowcases, scrub hats and bead bags for children at MUSC. February brought Joan Derylak s trunk show on Figure Flattering Quiltwear. She taught a class on Batik Blues jacket. In March we will preview the 2014 Quilt Show Challenge. The theme for the 2014 show is A Quilter s View of Charleston. The show committee will try a different approach to raise money using a theme quilt challenge. Members will submit an original design quilt in February and the winner will receive a cash prize of $250. The winning design s pattern will then be sold. The design will also be used as the Quilt Show logo. This is in lieu of a quilt raffle. Later this year Cobblestone will be celebrating its 30 th Anniversary.
