2 2019 Quilt Show Meet Our Quilt Show Judge About JeanBiddick Two things should have given Jean Biddick an early hint that quilting was in her future. First, when she was four years old, her mother taught her to print her name and she promptly scratched it into the top of a sewing machine cabinet. Jean claimed the sewing machine early. That machine now lives at her house and her name is still faintly visible. Second, the first house Jean and her husband purchased was on Calico Street. What could be a better start for a quilter? By first grade, Jean knew she wanted to be a teacher. She taught junior high school math for many years. Another love was jigsaw puzzles, and fitting together small bits of fabric seemed to be an extension of that love. Combing her love of teaching and piecing came naturally. Jean started her first quilt (still unfinished) in junior high school. A dozen years later, she became more serious about quilt making and was introduced to machine piecing. Jean s piecing skills improved and she began teaching machine piecing. She enjoys giving students the technical skills they need to turn their vision into quilts. Jean has been piecing traditional quilt patterns for more than 30 years and teaching machine piecing since Her quilts have received awards in national competitions and have been exhibited throughout the United States. She has been experimenting with traditional block designs and giving them a slightly different look for many years. Her teaching experience and math background help her clarify the things that can improve accurate piecing. Kay Daro Suzanne Moshier 2019 Quilt Show Co-Chair 2019 Quilt Show Co-Chair The application form for entering a quilt and the guide lines are available on the last two pages of this newsletter. We recommend you keep a copy of the guidelines for your information. Donations are being accepted by Janelle for the Mini Raffle There are still open slots for volunteers for the Judging Day. 4 Charity Report Thank you to all members who donated 45 bags and totes, two pillow cases, seven flannel quilts, and nine cotton quilts, 19 Christmas stockings, some fabric and toiletries. We also donated 650 Christmas stockings to Valley Assistance. Chris Erikson is the new rep and she came with Chris who is retiring to receive the stockings/ They talked about how much they appreciated our efforts and our skill. Valley Assistance values our donation of stockings at $10. eachj. This made us very proud of all the work that has gone into this part of our charity work. They also said they could use donations of lap quilts and walker bags. So I have donated six of our lap quilts to them and will be getting a pattern and kit ready for the walker bags. Over the past twp months of donations, we have donated to St. Andrews 70 bags and totes, 22 quilts, assorted bags of toiletries, and two pillow cases. Veterans have received five quilts. Good work, members, and thank you, thank you. Any questions, please call or Nancy Moshier at nmoshier@cox.net or Pictured left to right: Chris Kang, Chris Erickson, both of Valley Assistance Services and Nancy Moshier, the chairperson for Valley Quilters Guild Charity group.

5 Upcoming Meetings November 5, Board Meeting, 1:00, Friends in Deed, Room C October 11, Quilt Show Committee Meeting, 1:00 p.m., Del Coronado apartments November 15, Programs Committee Meeting, 9:30 and the General Meeting, 1:00, Lutheran Church of the Risen Savior November 15, General Guild Meeting, 1:00, Lutheran Church of the Risen Savior For other meetings, see the Guild Calendar on the last page of this Newsletter Quilt Tips To estimate the amount of fabric needed for a template, think of the template as fitting into a slightly larger square or rectangle, then use that size to figure how many pieces can be cut across the width of the fabric. Divide this number into the number of template pieces needed to see how many rows should be cut. Multiply the number of rows by the size, in inches, of the template square/rectangle and divide this number by 36 to get the yardage needed. The average usable fabric across the width is about 42. In the example pictured to the right, a total of 10 pieces could be cut from one 4 strip of fabric.

6 President s Message It s that time of year when the ducks fly south and our winter visitors start coming home. And welcome they are! We have a lot of things going on and things are a lot more fun when we have plenty of people to share them with. Coming up, our Bees will provide information to us about what, when, and where they do their projects. It s a great chance to join a group and meet new people as well as learning a new skill. I know I give the Art Quilters a lot of grief, but that is just because I am so envious of their creative abilities. If someone said, put together a bunch of wacky houses that look like this, I could probably do it, but I couldn t think up that idea in a million years! There is still a place for me and my (very) traditional quilts in the great quilt company of the universe. Speaking of quilts, I hope you are working hard on completing your quilt for the show. We love to have people see what we ve done. Our show is coming up and that means we are going to need a lot of helpers to make it a success. As my mother said, Many hands make light work, so keep peeling those tomatoes to can! Let me take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving and that your turkey is done and juicy! Just a reminder: The information in our membership roster is to be used by guild members and not shared with outside people. Also, the roster is to be used for guild business only. Carol Bisio President Lunch and Learn Come to Lunch and Learn as we travel thru the season with hints and tips on finishing our quilts. Bring your lunch and we will begin our discussion/demo at 12:15 on guild day.
