It s too hot to go outside, so I might as well get in a lot of quilting! It s also a good time to start on my Christmas stockings, as I m sure that I won t have time to do them in December. I ve been able to finish my Bonnie Hunter quilt this summer and I ve made my granddaughters Ellie and Savannah some doll clothes and the cutest little doll quilt you ve ever seen! It s nice to see a few things get finished! I don t know about you, but I m getting really excited about starting our new guild year! So many new faces on the Executive Board, and a few from last year who will help us figure out the best way to serve the guild. In between vacationing and sewing (of course), some of our guild members have been hard at work this summer getting ready for this coming guild year! The Quilt Show committee has been planning a huge addition to the quilt show, which Corrine W is excited to present to everyone at the September meetings. Teri G and Doris K have been getting our Facebook and Website updates ready to start promoting our Quilt Show already! The Raffle Quilt has been finished and will be shown at the fair and Krista J has been getting the Raffle Tickets printed and ready to go out to our members at the Sept. meetings. Shirley P and her oh so very faithful helpers spent 2 weeks this summer teaching kids how to sew quilts and other fun projects at the Harvard Arts Center. I stopped by and goodness, they were all hard at work sewing. Sandy M and lots of volunteers had a very successful sale at the Show and Shine this summer too! The Executive Board had a Special Exec. meeting after the picnic, because we wanted to plan some special new things for this year. I bet you can t wait to hear what they are! We ve also had many Committee volunteers busy over the summer getting their special projects ready to present at the Sept meeting too. 1

2 Sew On and Sew Forth...From the President (Continued) Refreshments and kitchen cleanup will be provided by the Executive Board in September. When you check the refreshment schedule in the Membership packet, you will notice that each group (in Alpha order) has been changed to include more letters of the alphabet. We want to be sure that we have plenty of snacks when we have visitors that come and see what we re all about. This also means, that you will be asked to bring refreshments twice this year. Thank you so much! Margo Hess Gather the threads of your life and stitch them into JOY! FROM THE EVENING CHAIR It s almost September can you believe it? Summer has flown by. I m enjoying our cooler evenings and am looking forward to the daytime temps dropping and sending us some rain as well. I hope you got to spend your summer doing what you love. We had time with family, some travel and I even got a wee bit of quilting done. Matilda, my Featherweight, worked great in our fifth-wheel, and had some adventures of her own. The space under our bed was perfect to store my cutting board, rulers, travel ironing table and other necessities. My sweet hubby just smiled and put in a movie or read a book. It was great fun collecting fabric souvenirs from the places we visited, and I even made a new quilting friend on our travels. I can t wait to see you and catch up on your summer activities at our first evening meeting on August 27 at 6 pm at the Sleep Inn. Stay cool! Myrt Changes coming in September! CHALLENGES AND PRIZES!! We are creating something completely new to replace our Brown Bag challenge this year. (Aren t you SO excited!!) We will explain all about it in September! Instead of our Fat Quarter drawing this year, we re adding a new incentive to wearing your name badges. (We all want to know what everyone s names are, right??) And, we have a new Door Prize procedure, which will be new and quite exciting! (You will like this a whole LOT!) Yes, lots of changes coming, but lots of things to look forward to. I can hardly wait until the September meetings when I will share all of the details with you!! Margo Hess 2

3 August 2018 Community Quilts Report Number of quilts turned in from Sept 2017 through June 2018: #163. Number of quilts delivered to agencies: #118 The balance of quilts in inventory will be given away in the fall of At the present time, we give quilts to: Mercy Newborn (They can use some each month.) Healthy Start (ages newborn 5 years old.) Family Development Center (Ages 1-5 years old.) Early Intervention (Newborn 5 years old. These are children with physical or mental disabilities.) Adapt teens (ages years old. We give to them only once a year.) Battered Person s Advocacy (All ages; it is a changing population. Before Christmas, I asked for a count of residents and ages so each person received a quilt for Christmas.) Sleep in Heavenly Peace (This is a new organization. They build beds for 2-17 year-olds and need bedding for each bed. They have built 48 beds and will build 90 more in August. Anything up to twin size is welcome.) 632 SE Jackson St., Roseburg, OR I try to give Mercy quilts with baby colors and flannel or soft fabric on the backs when I have them. For toddlers, I prefer the bright colors and kid friendly prints with animals, cars, shapes and things to interest them. The quilts are often used as teaching tools for them to identify the animal or color etc. The majority of our quilts go to children 0-5 years old. The preferred size is 42 x 42 so a single width of fabric will make the back. The guild buys the batting for the little quilts, but our budget does not provide funds for batting for large quilts. If you provide fabric, batting and backing, the size is up to you. I have donation fabric for backing and guild batting. If you need supplies call me. I can meet you at Rays or Abby s in Winston or some place in Roseburg. I m always in need of solids for sashing and bindings. I need 2/3 yard for each kit of 9 blocks from Design-a-Block. 4 Community Quilts and Design A Block: Please keep quilts under 40 wide, if all you make are tops. If you make a complete quilt they need to be 50X50 inches or less. These quilts are going to be used for new born to 5 years old. If cutting blocks for Design A Block, cut them 4 ½ X 4 ½ or cut 4 7/8 square to right angle squares to equal a 4 ½ block. Also 2 pieces 4 ½ X 2 ½ will work. Please sew the 4 ½ X2 ½ rectangles into a block. You can give the blocks to Sandy Wilson or Debbie Hogg. Quilt kits made from the blocks designed at shows will include sashing cut 2 3/8 inches by width of fabric, backing and batting. Any quilts that will go to long arm quilters must have a back & bat that is at least 8 longer and wider than top. If you piece your back all strips must be cut same direction of grain. All cross or all length. They will not stretch correctly if mixed. Happy Quilting. Joan Stevens GUILD PROGRAM UPDATES FOOTSTOOL CLASS: There are still openings for the Footstool class. If you wanted to take the class and missed the chance to sign up, the September meeting(s) are your last opportunity. We don t have the 14 students to cover the cost of the class. So, please consider signing up and joining the fun! PNW EXPO: There are still a few opening if you have been considering going but haven t decided yet, the September meeting(s) are your last opportunity to get your reservation in. It should be fun! We are planning a few games and give a-ways and other fun stuff! So, get your seat reserved there are only a few left. QOV GROUP RENEWAL: Our QOV renewal is also this month. Please consider whether you would like to become a part of UVQG QOV group. Membership is only $5.00. For those who are new to the guild, this is in addition to your UVQG membership dues and enrolls you in the National QOV foundation. Also, if someone would like to take leadership of the group, there is an opening available. Donna Scully 4

5 2019 Quilt Show August Update We are working on the 2019 Quilt Show! The dates are April 26-28, There is so much going on and exciting news to tell the world about! We have 2 buildings at the Fairgrounds, Conference Hall and Douglas Hall. In Conference Hall we will have 4 classrooms for instructional and longarm classes, vendors, and quilt exhibits. Douglas Hall will have our fabulous Quilt Show, vendors and classrooms. We have signed the contract with Linda Schmidt, 2019 Featured Quilter! Yay! Her works of art are incredible!!!! Check her out on her website and share her information to all you know. Linda Schmidt - Cheryl Malkowski of Roseburg, will be instructing an all-day paperless paper piecing class and she will also be teaching classes of free-motion quilting with her books on domestic machines. Cheryl Malkowski - Shelley Sieverkropp of Wilber, Washington, will be instructing Longarm classes; Square and Straight, Getting Started with Pantographs, Binding by Longarm, Take me to your Ruler, BFF, and Get your Swag on. Shelley Sieverkropp - Plan on bringing your finished 2019 Guild Postcard Challenge! Please participate! Any style, skill level and media used is all up to you. I m working on mine, trying something new. Hoping for the best, as each new endeavor is a new step forward in this wide open field of fabulous techniques available to us. We are working with several other instructors who we plan to give more information on next month. Our website is current, and will be updated as new information is finalized. Sharing information is how we build an even bigger and better show. Let the world know that we aren t old ladies who just sew quilts. We are givers of the heart and soul! 7 PICNIC AT THE SILO We had an absolutely wonderful picnic in July out in Winchester at the home of Ed Stritzke. He has turned a huge silo into a wonderful picnic area and he is such a gracious host. First, we had a lovely Show and Share time. Goodness, some of our guild ladies have had a busy time sewing this summer. there were a lot of lovely quilts that were shown! We had a short meeting, and then a really nice lunch. My word, these ladies know how to make a yummy potluck dish! (Says the lady who brought something from the store!) After lunch, we brought out our cash and got busy buying from either the Junk in the Trunk sale or from our Christmas in July fabric sale. (The fabric was from a donated fabric stash to the guild last year.) CHRISTMAS FABRIC SALE We sold a LOT of Christmas fabric at our picnic in July, but I still have a whole suitcase full of wonderful fabric. So, what are we going to do with it? HAVE ANOTHER SALE OF COURSE! Bring your cash or checks to the day and evening meetings in Sept. and pick up a heck of a deal! The fabric is $4 a yard, and sold in increments. ($2 for half a yard, etc.) We still have a few panels left and they are only $2. Classes at the Arts Center Week 1 was the beginning sewing class. A record 13 students signed up. Thankfully 10 guild members volunteered every day, working patiently with both students and some cranky sewing machines. Everyone really focused on the projects and got along great. Each student made a hotpad, a pillow case, a larger bag and a small zipper bag. A special thank you to Pam S for leading the pillowcase class and to Sue M for leading the bag class. Week 2 we had 4 students in the beginning quilting class and 4 volunteers. All students got a good start on their quilt and should be able to finish. Personally it was one of the most most fun, rewarding activities I ve been in for a while. I have agreed to coordinate the classes for next year and Nan Sieck has agreed to be there during the daily classes. Again, thank you everyone for helping and supporting this activity.
