It was standing room only as alumni joined together to network and catch up on what is happening in their lives. Lisa Rhodes, CEO, of Education Foundation presented a new program on donating to our teachers. BULLETIN BOARD 5 MISSION STATEMENT 5 ADDRESS & WEB 5 Pictures courtesy of LC Campbell From the Board -- Carl Newton, President WE WANT YOUR FEEDBACK! The LEADERship Alumni Board of Directors have been discussing the possibility of a Lifetime Active Membership category for Alumni dues. This would be an additional option instead of the annual billing that each of us receive. We have not discussed pricing or structure for this since we were not sure how many of you would participate in such an option. We are interested in what you have to say about this idea. Please send your feedback, comments and whether or not you would be interested to my address at carl.newton@seacoastwealthmanagement.com. We appreciate your support and want you to be aware of what is going on behind the scenes to make LEADERship Alumni better for you. 3 Lake Okeechobee & Indian River Lagoon - NO QUICK FIX State Senator Joe Negron (class 4) who spearheaded the committee on the Indian River Lagoon and Lake Okeechobee Basin hearings Thursday August 22 at the Kane Center in Stuart, made time to ensure people had enough time to air their views taking comments until 9 p.m. An estimated 500 people showed up, some to testify and some to hear what was said in response to residents concerns There were 10 big ideas that emerged from the hearing; some were not feasible but some should be considered. Fifteen Scripps journalists covered the hearing and commented on what ideas are feasible. Declare eminent domain on sugar lands. All possibilities for acquiring land owned by U.S. Sugar and Florida Crystals, including eminent domain, should be analyzed for costs and benefits. Take control of Lake Okeechobee water levels and discharges away from Army Corps of Engineers and give it to a state agency who would be more in tune with resident s needs. In most cases the Corps builds a project and then it hands over control to a local authority. With the understanding that control not simply go from one bureaucracy to another. Store water on public and private lands. Negron has a goal to reduce the discharges by 50 percent within 90 to 120 days, a plan that centers on finding land to store the water. But the acreage available is limited and it s simply a partial short-term fix. Re-examine a flow-way south. In light of the current crisis, Plan 6 deserves a fresh analysis from the South Florida Water Management District and the state. It is the most feasible proposal on the table for restoring the natural flow south from the Lake Okeechobee to the Everglades and it should be seriously considered. Kevin Henderson (class1), an engineer with Evergreen Engineering in Stuart, told the panel water could be moved south from Lake Okeechobee using facilities already in place to drain the Everglades Agricultural Area. He pointed out that if it rains today and the Everglades Agricultural Area needs to be drained, they d pump it out and send that water south. If they can do that, why not pump Lake Okeechobee water south? Note: LEADERship Martin County Class 1 formed the St. Lucie River Initiative in 1991 thru their task force assignment. Class members in that group, Kevin Henderson and Tim Kinane, are still involved with the river issues. Everyone needs to get involved! September 2013 LEADERship Alumni Newsletter Page 3
4 Business Person of the Month -- John Hennessee John Hennessee MD (class 21), moved from Phoenix to Port Salerno in after retiring from 25 years of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine. Originally beginning in business with Port Salerno Marine, a do-it-yourself boat yard, and later adding the Fish House Art Center, which is an eclectic collection of artists studios, a coffee & wine café, and a fine art gallery. He later added the large Waterfront restaurant (originally called Finz) to the portfolio as well. His community involvement began by helping found the Port Salerno Seafood Festival, now in its eighth year. He also founded the 501c(4) Port Salerno Community Promotions, Inc., which has produced the annual Port Salerno Christmas Jamboree, Salerno Art Shows, Salerno Swagger pub crawls, and the Salerno Mullet Toss Fish Vat Race. Now he also helps produce the Goombay Bash, the Stuart Air Show, and the Stuart Sailfish Regatta. He served on the Port Salerno Neighborhood Advisory Committee for eight years, then as chairman of the County CRA Board for two years. He also serves on the Parks and Rec. Board, the Convention and Visitors Bureau Board, and the Marine Industries Assoc. of the Treasure Coast Board. SALES TAX VOTED DOWN: Taryn Kryzda (13) County Administrator stated we need for the community to come forward with recommenda ons the issue will not get any be er our hope is that the Commissioners will direct us to work on this for next year and get it on the ballot - then they will have ample me to fully vet it in the community which is what a few Commissioners indicated they wanted. The Board of County Commissioners adopted a strategic objec ve to priori ze deferred maintenance and address the backlog with funding strategies. This also includes con nued environmental protec on and restora on. One op on is to ini ate a one-cent or half-cent sales tax for three to ten years. Approximately $226.3 million is needed in backlog for roads, drainage, parks, buildings and informa on technology with the annual need to maintain assets at roughly $10.5 million. Because in recent years the county has held the millage rate constant and even reduced it, we now have a situa on where the dollar amount necessary to address these needs is out of reach even if there were a tax rate increase. At the August 20 commission mee ng, the five commissioners could not agree on the sale tax amount, me frame and what the sale tax should fund. If you were asked to vote on a sales tax referendum, what would you approve? Let your voice be heard.
