The objective is that by doing this class by class, we will be able to regain a little of that camaraderie we all felt when we enjoyed our year of LEADERship training and increase the effectiveness of our communication. 3 The statistics are staggering. One in three women are raped or beaten in their lifetime. That equates to one billion of the women alive in the world today. Our community will participate in a global movement to end violence against women and girls during Martin County s second One Billion Rising for Justice event which take place on Valentine s Day - February 14, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Gazebo Park in downtown Stuart. Olivia Ranieri, is coordinating the second annual event to bring greater awareness to violence against women The idea to coordinate a local rising in Martin County was the brainchild of 17-year-old Olivia Ranieri, a South Fork High School International Baccalaureate student who was inspired to take action by her English teacher, Ms. Kimberly Ballard. I m passionate about women s rights and violence against women is a pertinent and important issue across the globe. It s also an issue that women are facing right here in our own community and I wanted to take action locally, explained Ranieri. For the second year in a row, Ranieri assembled an impressive committee of notable women in the community who have been helping her orchestrate the event including: Kim Ballard, Monique Robbins, Ruth Bennett, Mindi Fetterman, Kelly George, Megan Morris, Ellyn Stevenson, Melissa Zolla, Saadia Tsaftarides, LEADERship Alumni Darcy Flierl, Stacy Ranieri, Linda Weiksnar and Sue Whittington. The tagline to One Billion Rising is Drum, Dance and Rise and the campaign believes, dance is one of the most powerful forces on the earth and we have only just begun to tap into where it can take us. The struggle of humanity is the struggle to return to our bodies. Attendees should be ready to do just that. The event is free to all and will feature speakers including SafeSpace representatives Darcy Flierl and Rebecca Beckett, the Inner Truth Project s founder Mindi Fetterman and others. While violence against women is a serious issue, the event itself is fun and celebratory with dance demonstrations and singing performances from various local groups, music from a local drum circles as well as other entertainment and food provided by Julie Lentine s Taco Shack In addition to the main global event on February 14, Ranieri has expanded her vision and is also organizing a march on the Roosevelt Bridge in the weeks before the event and poetry readings at a local coffee shop. All are invited to attend. For more information, visit the One Billion Rising for Justice Martin County Facebook Page. ONE BILLION RISING FOR JUSTICE is a global call to women survivors of violence, and those who love them, to gather safely in communities across the globe in outdoor places to draw attention to the issue. It is a call to survivors to break the silence and release their stories politically, spiritually, outrageously --- through art, dance, marches, ritual, song, spoken word, testimonies and whatever way feels right. For more information on this global movement go to Olivia Ranieri & Kimberly Ballard February 2015 LEADERship Alumni Newsletter Page 3

We are proud of our team of community volunteers who will help The Palm City Chamber serve our organization in the coming year. Power Brothers - Leaders in our Community Industrial park in Indiantown gets an OK from county. The 100-acre development would be managed partially by community leaders Kevin (15), David (17) and Brian (7) Powers. The brothers, who hold three of the park s five executive positions; have worked with state and local governments to develop and brings jobs to Indiantown; have served on the South Florida Water Management district governing board, Indiantown s MPO and the Business Development Board. Florida Commerce Park, formerly the Indiantown Commerce and Technology Park, could potentially host dozens of companies with approximately 500 to 2,000 jobs. The park would be along the west side of the CSX railroad tracks and State Road 710, north of the Booker Park community. The land currently is vacant. Indiantown s status as a transportation hub.it s close to major roads, railroad tracks and waterways. could make the park attractive to buyers.
