Internatonally renowned for ts strct standards and commtment to buldng nsttutonal capacty, the Troy, Mch.-based foundaton approves only 25 percent of the grant proposals t revews annually. Accordng to Rp Rapson, presdent of The Kresge Foundaton, DePaul presented a compellng strategy to use the grant to help leverage support from new donors and solct hgher levels of gvng from past contrbutors. 2 Scholarshp donors and students recognzed at annual luncheon Scholarshp donors and recpents were recognzed at DePaul Unversty s annual Scholarshp Luncheon, held ths year on Aprl 29 at the Unversty Club of Chcago. Accordng to Helmut Epp, provost of DePaul Unversty, the unversty provdes some form of fnancal ad, ncludng scholarshps, to almost 70 percent of ts 23,400 students. Addressng the scholarshp donors at the luncheon, Epp sad, Your support creates opportuntes for students to receve an educaton an educaton that s perhaps more mportant today than t has been at any other tme and your support comes at a tme when fundng from publc sources s uncertan. Two DePaul scholarshp recpents also reflected on the value of scholarshp support. Gerald A. Beeson (COM 94), DePaul trustee and COO of Chcago-based Ctadel Investment Group, recounted recevng a scholarshp from the DePaul accountng alumn organzaton Ledger & Qull. I stll remember the tears streamng down my dad s face when he heard the news. It was unfathomable to hm and mom that programs lke ths one exsted, sad Beeson. We were extremely grateful because ths scholarshp would provde me wth access to DePaul that I would not have otherwse had. Your support comes at a tme when fundng from publc sources s uncertan. Beeson contnued, Scholarshp s about openng doors that were once opened for you, enablng common experences between generatons and sharng the blessngs of one s lfe wth others. 3 Exelon Foundaton gves $400,000 to DePaul scence campagn The Exelon Foundaton has contrbuted $400,000 to DePaul Unversty n support of ts $20 mllon Campagn for Excellence n Scence. The gft supports the constructon of the Monsgnor Andrew J. McGowan Scence Buldng on DePaul s Lncoln Park Campus. The buldng, whch ncorporates several green features, s scheduled to open for classes n January One of the prortes of the Exelon Foundaton s to support scence educaton. Another foundaton focus s to promote the use of energy-effcent technology. The new scence buldng at DePaul Unversty combnes both of these concerns, says Steve Solomon, Exelon Foundaton presdent. We are proud to facltate constructon of DePaul s frst major green buldng, and support the unversty s ntegrated approach to teachng scence. A 100-seat, tered audtorum on the buldng s frst floor and a second story skyway connectng the new buldng to an exstng buldng wll be named n recognton of the Exelon Foundaton s support. Frank M. The ntatve promotes communty-based programs and research that help prevent and ntervene n genderrelated oppressons. Irene Beck retred n 2007 from the faculty of the Women s and Gender Studes Program, a program she founded wth current program drector Beth Catlett. DePaul has always been very supportve of me and the Women s and Gender Studes Program, says Irene. Bll and I n turn wanted to create opportuntes for students and enable them to research and be actvsts for socal justce. The grant wll help fund assstantshps, nternshps and stpends for graduate and undergraduate students n the Women s and Gender Studes Program. At least one student project annually wll nclude research n the John T. Rchardson Lbrary s Specal Collectons and Archves. The Becks have made several gfts to DePaul, ncludng donatng books, manuscrpts and letters by notable Illnos wrters to the Rchardson Lbrary. 4 Gft of Warhol photographs offers a peek nto artst s workng methods The DePaul Unversty Museum receved 150 photographs from the Andy Warhol Foundaton for Vsual Arts. The gft s part of the foundaton s Andy Warhol Photographc Legacy Program, whch has dstrbuted 28,500 of the artst s orgnal photographs valued n excess of $28 mllon to more than 180 college and unversty museums across the country. Accordng to Joel Wachs, the foundaton s presdent, the am of the program s to gve people n communtes across the Unted States access to an mportant but relatvely unknown body of Warhol s work. The DePaul gft black-and-whte and Polarod portrats of celebrtes, models and of Warhol hmself complements the museum s growng collecton of md-20th-century photography and provdes a wndow nto the Pop Art master s workng process, accordng to DePaul Museum Drector Louse Lncoln. Much of the work n the collecton from that perod s what s sometmes called straght photography, she explans. Straght photographs can look deceptvely lke snap shots, but n fact, many of them are actually very carefully composed and planned. In a sense, she says, Warhol contnues that tradton n hs portrat photography. Shot n seres, the photos are ever-so-slghtly dfferent, each capturng a small change n the subject s expresson or atttude. He ddn t just pont and shoot, Lncoln says. Ths group of photographs suggests nstead that Warhol was very delberate n creatng and selectng hs mages, an nsght that contrbutes to a better understandng of hs famous screen-prnted multples of socaltes and celebrtes such as Marlyn Monroe and Jacquelne Kennedy portrat of Mexcan socalte Patrca S. de Barros-Gomez by Andy Warhol museums.depaul.edu Brefs Coleman Center campagn reaches goal Through the support of more than 200 donors, the Coleman Entrepreneurshp Center rased $1.5 mllon to meet the Coleman Foundaton s challenge grant. The foundaton, whch matched all campagn gfts dollar for dollar, ssued the challenge n 2004 to encourage support for the center s consultng servces and educatonal programmng. Phlanthropy Week celebrates gvng Durng DePaul s naugural Phlanthropy Week n May, the unversty communty celebrated the generous support of faculty, staff and students for DePaul s msson. 5 Journalst bequeaths $450,000 to DePaul Dolores McCahll s (LAS 50) career as a relgon reporter for the Chcago Sun-Tmes took her around the world, but she always remaned grateful for her DePaul Unversty educaton. When she passed away n 2007, McCahll left DePaul more than $450,000 through her estate. Her bequest, whch was added to DePaul s endowment, wll help fund unversty prortes, ncludng scholarshps, academc programs and captal mprovements. McCahll worked for the Chcago Sun-Tmes for 34 years from her graduaton untl her retrement n 1984, accordng to Ron Campbell, McCahll s cousn. As a relgon reporter, er, she spent several months n Italy reportng on the Second Ecumencal Councl of the Vatcan, or Vatcan II, and also traveled to Inda and Brazl. Later, McCahll reported from the State of Illnos Buldng n Chcago and covered the Illnos governor s press conferences. Campbell remembers hs cousn as a humble person whose lfe revolved around the newspaper and her famly. When Dolores was at DePaul, t was unusual for women to enter journalsm, says Campbell. In that sense, she was groundbreakng. She also smply enjoyed reportng on events wherever they happened and could depend on her amazng memory and wrtng sklls. Dolores McCahll (LAS 50) n the early 1960s Born on Chcago s South Sde, McCahll was among the frst tenants of the conc Marna Cty n downtown Chcago and lved there untl late n her lfe. Raven Cox A natve of Chcago s South Sde, Raven Cox (COM 05) transferred to DePaul Unversty on a scholarshp after earnng an assocate s degree n busness admnstraton. Followng her DePaul graduaton, she worked for several years for Delotte before jonng Crowe Chzek, a publc accountng and consultng frm, as a rsk consultant. In 2007, Cox became a member of the Presdent s Club, DePaul s premer annual gvng socety, wth a gft n support of scholarshps. What dd the scholarshp support mean to you? Cox: I would not have been able to afford hgher educaton, especally the top educaton that DePaul offers, wthout a scholarshp. I was caught n the mddle: My mom made too much for me to qualfy for full fnancal ad, but she ddn t make enough to pay my tuton. What motvates you to gve back to DePaul? Cox: I gve back because so much was gven to me. I know that completng my bachelor s degree at DePaul led to my career success thus far. I hope my gfts wll help students who have the desre to complete a hgher educaton but whose funds fall short, especally those caught n the mddle lke I was. What does t mean to be a Presdent s Club member? Cox: Beng a Presdent s Club member at such an early stage of my career s an honor for me. I stll feel connected to DePaul and that s mportant to me. Involvement n professonal assocatons can help students learn about the busness world, provde them wth professonal contacts and expose them to career optons. But often students don t know about professonal assocatons or can t afford to attend ther meetngs, says Charles H. Wurtzebach (COM 71), managng drector, North Amerca, at the Chcago offce of Henderson Global Investors and a foundng sponsor of The Real Estate Center at DePaul Unversty. To address ths need, he recently created the Charles H. Wurtzebach, Ph.D., Endowed Scholarshp. The scholarshp wll help offset travel and conference expenses for DePaul students attendng non-proft real estate assocaton meetngs. I hope that by helpng defray the costs, the scholarshp wll encourage students to explore the off-campus world, Wurtzebach says. Wth a broader educaton and broader experence, students wll be better employees and hopefully better busness leaders. The author or co-author of several real estate textbooks, Wurtzebach has held a number of academc and corporate postons n the real estate feld. Foundaton recently awarded a two-year, $113,000 grant to DePaul Unversty s Asylum and Immgraton Law Clnc to expand the clnc s partnershps wth Chcago-area communty-based organzatons. Wth ths fundng, we wll be able to ncrease communty-based organzatons capacty to provde qualty legal servces to ther consttuents, says Soban Albol, clnc coordnator. We re extremely grateful that the Polk Bros. Foundaton has supported our efforts snce Through ts Legal Resource Project, the clnc provdes legal resources and professonal development servces to 24 communty-based organzatons that work wth mmgrants and refugees. The grant wll enable the clnc to partner wth addtonal organzatons and develop a network of attorneys and College of Law students to provde pro bono legal servces to mmgrants and refugees. We vew our support of the clnc as a very cost-effectve way of mprovng the servces provded by many Chcago-area organzatons for mmgrants from around the world, says Nkk Wll Sten, Polk Bros. To memoralze Crese s legacy, her nece, Helen Del Msser Hachem, recently pledged $50,000 to the DePaul Unversty College of Law to create the Helen M. Crese Endowed Award. The award wll be gven annually to a law student demonstratng a commtment to publc nterest work. Thanks to DePaul s wllngness to admt women when many colleges would not, my aunt fulflled her dream to be a lawyer and contrbute to the advancement of women, says Del Msser Hachem. Helen Crese (JD 20) pctured n an undated Women Lawyers Journal law.depaul.edu A frst-generaton Italan-Amercan, Crese became the youngest woman to pass the Illnos bar exam 10 months before her 21st brthday n February Over the course of her career, Crese served as presdent of the Women s Bar Assocaton of Illnos and the Natonal Assocaton of Women Lawyers. She also was the frst female presdent of the West Suburban Bar Assocaton. Her work on the status and legal rghts of women helped lead to an Illnos state consttuton amendment grantng women the rght to serve on jures.
