2 MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear St. Agnes Parents, This evening, our Church begins the celebration of the Sacred Triduum: Holy Thursday the Mass of the Lord s Supper, Good Friday Celebration of the Passion of the Lord and Holy Saturday the Easter Vigil. The Triduum days are followed by the celebration of Jesus resurrection on Easter Sunday. Our Church invites us to put aside as much of the daily busyness of life that we can during these days and walk with Jesus through the celebration of the paschal mystery his life, death and resurrection that brings new life to the world. During this Lenten Season, your children have been learning about the Triduum and the Paschal Mystery of our faith. We hope that many of our school families will gather with our Parish families to celebrate these holy days. If you are on vacation, find a Church near you to enter into these days. This is what we are teaching your children the importance of keeping Jesus in their lives. Report cards for the third quarter will be sent via today. Please watch for them and let us know if you do not receive your child(ren) s report card. Families who have outstanding fees due for Late Day, lunch and/or tuition will not be receiving report cards. Those families are asked to contact me regarding special arrangements for payments. We are very proud of our Jr. High students who attended the Regional Science Fair last Saturday. Three of those students who attended qualify for the State competition that will be held in May: Camille Arisman, Sophia Ludolph and Meredith Lyons. Other students who represented our school include: Nick Phalen, Tucker Von Behren, who received first place awards and Zach Morton who received a second place award. Tucker received a monetary award and certificate for the complexity of his project. Thank you to Mrs. Karen Perrero for her guidance with the student projects and her presence with our students at Regionals. The State Science Fair will be held on Saturday, May 14 th in Decatur at Millikan University. Good luck to our St. Agnes students. Thank you to all who participated in our Spring Barnes & Noble Book Fair. You may still purchase online through this evening. We are grateful to Mrs. Ellen Bartletti for her leadership with the Book Fair and to parent volunteers who assisted at Barnes & Noble. Recently, our fifth and sixth grade Math classes participated in the St. Jude s Matha-thon. The students raised $2, for St. Jude s Children s Research Hospital. These funds will supply four days of oxygen to a patient. Kudos to our fifth and sixth grade Math students and their teacher, Mrs. Cunningham! Re-registration papers for the school year were due this past Monday, March 21 st. Please take the time to complete your registration so that we can begin preparing for next year. Please contact me for an appointment if there are concerns that you would like to discuss as we end one year and prepare for a new year. Together, we make our school stronger. Fr. Bob, Mrs. Tusek and/or I would be happy to meet with any of our families regarding input or concerns you might have. During April, I will be scheduling a Coffee with the Principal for those who would like to gather and share ideas. The applications for Tuition Assistance for the school year can be completed online. If you have already applied for SHG and listed St. Agnes children the applications will apply for both schools. The applications are reviewed by Father Bob and me and assistance assigned according to the funds we have available, the number requesting aide and the amount recommended by FACTS due to family need. Fr. Steve Janoski, St. Joseph pastor, will also review the applications of their families who are requesting assistance and provide the financial assistance for those who continue to be active St. Joseph parishioners. Parishioners must have signed a contract with the Parish 2

3 regarding participation and service in the Parish. St. Joseph families, who have not been attending St. Joseph Church and contributing to the support of the Parish, will not be granted this aide. St. Agnes families must also be aware that attending Mass and supporting our Church is a factor in considering this financial aid. Eighth grade families should have received a packet of three applications for scholarships. The three scholarships include: Edward Goetz, Monsignor Wright and the St. Agnes Parish scholarship. All of these applications will be due by Tuesday, April 12 th. Applications can be turned in as they are completed. Please be aware that all applications that were submitted to me for the SHG Alumni Scholarship were completed and delivered to SHG. Eighth graders are invited to attend the 8 th grade Lock-In that will be held on Friday, April 22 nd. Eighth graders are asked to mark your calendars! This is also the Confirmation Retreat Day. The Student Council officers are already meeting to plan for the Lock-In activities. I hope that all of our eighth graders will be able to be present for this special evening. It has been a great bonding experience for classes who have attended in the past. This is our ninth year of offering this event. As you will see in this Newsletter, this year we are introducing a new event! For our athletes and their families! A Sports Banquet will be held to celebrate the accomplishments of our St. Agnes athletes and to present awards for the year. Please hold the date of Sunday, April 17 th at 5:00 p.m. A second event related to sports will be the St. Agnes Sports Round-Up to be held on Tuesday, April 26 th, at 6:30 p.m. in the school gym. This will be an evening to sign up for any of the sports programs that students would like to be a part of for the school year. All current 4 th through 7 th graders and their parents are invited to this evening. Faith Reflection: Taken from Joyce Rupp Eastering isn t always a quick step out of the tomb. Sometimes rising from the dead takes a long, slowly-greening time. It can t be hurried. It may be a painstakingly slow process, a tiny bit of life gradually weaving through one s pain and questions. It is my hope for you this Easter season that you will trust the resurrection of your spirit, believe that joy and new life will come for you, even though it may not be there for you now. If you are one of the fortunate ones whose soul sings with happy alleluias this Easter, may you turn often to those who are still awaiting their greening and walk hopefully with them. A reminder that I will be returning from my trip to the National Catholic Education Conference in California on April 6 th. Mrs. Tusek will be here for you on the first three days after Easter vacation. Know that I hold each of you and your children in my prayers throughout this Easter Season. Happy Easter! Happy Spring! Happy Vacation! Celebrating with you the gift of new life, Sr. Joan LIBRARY Maddie Springer in 4B recently conquered part of her reading goal by finishing half of the Bluestem books. Her favorite book on this year's Bluestem Award list is Matilda by Roald Dahl. Great job, Maddie! Several 1st grade students have reached their Reading Counts goals. Congratulations, Isabella Farley, Luca Madonia and Zane Shelton! Keep reading! 3
