You were selected based on your wk ethic, interest in the subject, motivation about what you do, and creativity and talent. The small things you do now could turn something large enough to make an impact. This summer packet will hopefully help keep you thinking creatively. Please read the course description and objectives clearly. The homewk list follows with instructions; you choose 4 to do and approach as projects that should be completed in capacity to be included in your ptfolio. Have fun! Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. We will have a meeting with all AP students at the beginning of next school year, in which a ptfolio day will be arranged and discussed. Please do not wait until the last minute to complete your assignments as this will create me wk f you in the end! APcentral.collegeboard has me infmation about the AP Art Program. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES The Advanced Placement Program in Studio Art: 2-D Design is a perfmance-based visual exam. Each student develops and submits a ptfolio that serves as a direct demonstration of achievement. The term "2-D Design" is used very broadly; a wide range of wk can fit into this ptfolio. The unifying idea f the ptfolio is that the student focuses on making decisions about how to use the principles and elements of art to create wks of art that convey meaning. In some cases, the "meaning" of the wk may involve messages on a literal level (f example, graphic design, product design). However, "meaning" is just as likely to take the fm of abstract purely visual coherence. What's critical is that sense of deliberate manipulation of the visual tools represented by the elements and principles. The wk may be highly technological, it may be created with the most simple means. Any two-dimensional medium may be used f this ptfolio. Some of the goals f this summer packet are: Develop an understanding of the basic elements, principles, theies and language used in two dimensional art and design and how these can be applied to a variety of mediums Develop your skills of thinking, speaking and writing critically about your wk, as well as the wk of others Gain a heightened awareness of visual culture Learn me about the histy of image making and design, as well as contempary issues Experiment with new materials & conceptual approaches to image making, encouraging creativity and risk-taking Develop techniques in problem solving and critical thinking Prepare you f advanced placement art classes
3 Summer Homewk list f prospective AP Students **Choose 4 from this list, each assignment should also have 3 thumbnail/ planning ideas in your sketchbook each assignment you choose** Pattern Project Develop a repeated pattern that focuses on line, shape, texture, and col. Suggested artists: Ryoji Ikeda Suggested materials: 18 x 24 watercol paper, acrylic paint, paint brushes, painters tape Architecture from a bug s eye view Capture pictures of a downtown/city environment from an interesting area in der to magnify the height and impact of various buildings. Take at least 40 pictures. Suggested materials: digital camera Independent research f artists Image Transfer of a bugs eye view Print one of your most successful images at 5 x 7 and transfer onto a sheet of paper sized 15 x 21 using the grid transfer method. If you are unaware as to how to do the grid transfer method then try your best to match the proptions exactly. Complete this assignment using pencil and a blending stump. Suggested Artist: Chuck Close A bug on the wall Visit a park, restaurant, other public venue to capture candid photographs of everyday people and events. Try to capture the moment! Get in close, shoot from atypical angles, and through unusual places. Independent research f artists Shapes and fms Create a composition that appears to have shapes and fms stacked on top of each other. Experiment with col and texture. Suggested materials: 18 x 24 drawing paper, pencil, Suggested Artists: Sam Gilliam, Gustav Klimt, Paul Klee, Ljubov Popova 1- point 2-point perspective Take a series of photographs in which 1- point 2- point perspective is evident. Take at least 40 images. Suggested Artist: Cindy Sherman Self ptrait using perspective and incpating a surreal approach (wk from a photograph) Suggested artists: Frida Kahlo, Charles Sheeler, Rufino Tamayo, David Alfaro Siqueiros Perspective using the human figure (wk from a photograph if you are doing a drawing painting) Print one of your most successful images at 5 x 7 and transfer onto a sheet of paper sized 15 x 21 using the grid transfer method. If you are unaware as to how to do the grid transfer method then try your best to match the proptions exactly. Complete this assignment using a pencil and blending stump.
