1 ADVANCE PLACEMENT STUDIO ART DRAWING PORTFOLIO Summer Assignment 2013 Read all directions carefully! All assignments in this packet must be brought to Mr. Bortz in room 48 on the first day back to school (Monday Aug. 26, 2013) for a critical review, and must be resolved to Mr. Bortz s satisfaction in full by the fifth day of school (Friday Aug. 30, 2013). 2 Part One - Sketchbook: Using permanent ink markers, students are to complete a series of descriptive line drawings of objects, places, people, and events they witness over the summer break. Record the series of at least 10 drawings in your sketchbook- required size 11x14. Drawings should not be mere sketches, but rather well developed and composed studies that demonstrate close attention to subject, space, shape and form, as well as detail. (Sakura makes really good archival markers. They may be purchased in different nib widths individually or in sets from most arts & crafts suppliers. Treat yourself to a brush tip, they are fun! Archival Ink pen set Water color paint set Brush Pens in Black and also in colors!
3 After you develop a knack for drawing with the pens, allow yourself to explore color. Inexpensive water colors are fine to use in your sketchbooks, and some sets even come with brushes included.
4 Part Two Five Strong Drawings: Production: Students are to complete 5 projects in addition to the sketchbook assignment this summer. These tasks may be completed in any 2D medium, on a standard format 18x24 drawing paper, board, or canvas. In order to be considered an AP Candidate, be certain to emphasize mark-making, line quality, direct observation and composition in these drawings.
5 STRONG Drawing #1 ¾ View Automobile Portrait Using X-Ray Artist Vision: Below are images of three cars all seen in ¾ views. Position yourself at one of these views by a car you have access to. Using the natural light available, capture the car s form using light and shadow. Showcase reflective surfaces by giving them more contrast (i.e. the VW s metal body reflects more light than its cloth retractable top). Fill your 18 x 24 picture plane intelligently (notice how the Italian supercar is cropped-in close, but nothing looks crowded or cut-off. The shadow of the car touches the right edge of the picture plane, nice!) Once you have your composition laid-out, imagine you can see through the metal just like it was glass! Show approximately half of the car as it normally appears and the other half X-rayed. Be creative in how you divide these effects in your illustration!

7 STRONG Drawing #3 Concrete Poetry meets Sculptural Billboard, Put-It-All-In Illustration! Find an important piece of recent journalism covering sports, politics, the environment, fashion, local culture, you name it. Using key words from the story plus any visual references you can obtain, build a monstrosity of an illustration effectively symbolizing and personifying the emotional impact of the news it is bringing. Develop this image on 18 x 24 paper, board, or canvas. Let nothing look flat. In the example above, notice how the objects drawn together seem to be glued by some strange gravitational force! Also, allow your assembly to take on a form that will ultimately convey meaning as the some of its parts. The form of the example seems to be that of a terribly dangerous beast! Have fun with this one!
8 STRONG Drawing #4 Self-Portrait (at night): One light only, must you use! Directly above, or below your face. The effect must allow you to see, very clearly, your bone structure. Compose on 18 x 24 paper, board, or canvas a strongly contrasting, highly-detailed rendering of your visage. The shapes of the shadows are very important! Develop them accordingly, and get at least twice as much detail as you see in the example drawings.
