1 Project 1: Instagram Step 1: Create your own ART instagram using your name and an art related term. Example: GaredLuquetArt, ArtByMontana, OliviaCreates, WiseSageArts etc. Be creative! Be obvious that you are an artist. Step 4: Post your work to your Instagram, as well as any other pieces you did this year that you like.

2 Project 2: Unusual Interior Drawings of an unusual interior for example, look inside a closet or cabinet, in the refrigerator, under the car s hood or inside the medicine cabinet. Medium: Pen or Pencil Size: at least 11 x14 Ideas: Interior of a washing machine, tool box, toy bin, trash can, memory box, art bin, backpack, freezer, etc.

3 Project 3: Extreme Close Up Charcoal Drawing For this drawing you are going to create an extreme close up charcoal drawing of an insect, or reptile influenced by the cropping technique in the paintings of Georgia O Keeffe. Medium: Charcoal Size: At least 11 x14 Supplies: Charcoal Vine Charcoal Charcoal paper When finding a photo make sure to adjust the brightness and contrast to allow for a lot of value. Make sure to have a gradation of bright whites to dark black.

4 USING CHARCOAL SEE MR. LUQUET FOR SUPPLIES BEFORE SUMMER BREAK You should have three different types of charcoal: 1. vine charcoal 2. pressed charcoal 3. charcoal pencil Most of your drawing should be done with the vine charcoal. You will find it very easy to manipulate and move around and erase. Rather than sketch in pencil you should use the more direct method of drawing with the vine charcoal. Vine charcoal can only darken to a deep velvety gray. For really dark areas you will have to move to the pressed charcoal. After laying out the drawing in the vine charcoal use the pressed charcoal sparingly. It is difficult to erase once it is laid down, therefore, be sure that that is the place where you want it. Exercise 1: To familiarize yourself with the charcoal, draw a box in your small sketchbook and mark it off into nine spaces. Start at the top with the pressed charcoal and make the top box black. Work down to the bottom box and lighten each one gradually until you arrive at the bottom space. Leave it white. You should have nine different levels of grey. Each one is a value. Value means how light or dark something is.do not outline the boxes but rather have the tone against tone. Make sure that you can clearly distinguish between each one. You may have to erase and add more charcoal to make the values work out right. You can also rub the charcoal with your fingertip to make the layer of value smooth and even. A tissue can also be used for rubbing.

5 Now that you have some experience working charcoal the next step is to render a sphere. Exercise 2: Set up a ball on the table in front of you. Put a light on it at about 45 degrees and either to the left or right of the ball. The light should not be in front of, or in back of, the ball. Keep other lighting in the room low in order to get a good sense of values and how they change across the surface of the ball. Start by drawing a circle at least as large as your fist in your small sketchbook. Start toning the ball by carefully observing the values on the ball. Refer to the illustration here to make sure you understand the components of rendering a sphere. Tips: You can purchase gray and white charcoal as well. As you start to have sections of your drawing that you like, you can spray workable fix-it so that I will not smudge. You can also use erasers to go in and create more light values in your piece.
