2 Mon 10/14/14 AB1 & AB5 Painting II Reminder: I m Ms. Pena & I m taking over today. Mrs. Meisner expects you to treat me with the same respect you treated her with. I d like to review my expectations with you. Warm up: What is the solvent & cleaner for Acrylic Paints? Due Now: Large Atmospheric Perspective Oil Painting Today s Objectives: Practice Acrylic techniques (Listed on next slide) Use Large water color paper. Do them like we did W.C. & Oil. After you finish techniques on nice water color paper or on small canvas board do an acrylic painting of a small animal. Keep it simple & creative. Remember to layer! See next slides for ideas Remember: Your Choice Oil will be extra credit if you finish & Turn it in. You can work on it in between times when you are waiting for something else to dry. (Always a good idea to have 2 paintings going on at the same time!) Closing Question: What are the cleaning procedures for Acrylic brushes & pallets? Warm up Answer: Water is the solvent to thin out. Water & SOAP are the cleaners. It is VERY Important that you clean out your acrylic brushes & pallets with soapy water after each class!
3 Practice Acrylic Techniques: 1. Wash Water & little color. Good for under painting or backgrounds. 2. Transparent 1 layer, little water 3. Opaque 2 or 3 solid layers; no water 4. Value Scale Value range in Black, using water to dilute or white to lighten 5. Monochromatic Value Scale One color plus white & black. 6. Hard, clean edge for clean edges 7. Soft, fuzzy edge for soft edges 8. Smooth fade - value range of one color 9. Hatching - ///// textured painting 10. Cross-Hatching XXXXX textured painting 11. Stippling Dots textured painting 12. Blend 2 colors fade together 13. Tint a highlight - one color + white (or a lighter color) 14. Shade a dark value one color + black (or a darker color) Modeled Objects Make it look 3D - Apply all techniques on objects Use a light source, cast shadow, shade, fade, blend, & tint Next, Paint an animal in acrylic utilizing the techniques & MODELING an object!

I d like to review my expectations with you. Warm up: Review the Objectives for applying charcoal value (Below). This is how you ll be graded! You will have today & Friday to finish your project. Wed is PSAT. Today s Objectives for applying charcoal value: - Determine your values on your still life (1-5) - Start with your lighter values and gradually build up to your darker values. - Smooth/Blend your values with finger or Tissue - Darken the edges to define the sides, but fade the dark edge into the value (don t leave a dark outline). - Add textures last. -Spray w/ workable fixative before turning in. When finished, Fill out the grade sheet & Turn in. Then work from another angle/perspective. Do black charcoal on white paper OR white charcoal on black paper! Closing question: What is something you have done really well with your charcoal still life?

Warm up: Describe the similarities & differences between these 2 pictures: Today s Objectives: Finish neatly cutting out your Notan design. Lay your whole design out on the white paper before gluing. Neatly Glue on the large 12x12 White paper. Make sure you line up all your shapes on the line of symmetry. Use grade sheet to make sure you have mastered all the objectives. Cut it in half & use the 2 nd part for the Color Notan. Glue that one on white OR black paper! Then begin your 2 nd Notan with colored paper. Be creative with it! This will also be for a grade. Closing Question: What type of balance & design did you use for your Notan?
17 Need to Review Notan Process? 1. On the black square lightly draw simple LINES & SHAPES. You must begin & end on the same side. Use a variety of shapes and sizes & fill the space. You can draw shapes within shapes to make your design more interesting. Make sure your design is Asymmetrical (not the same on both sides). 2. Neatly & carefully cut your design out of black paper. Save all your pieces. Flip & lay them out as you cut to see your design. 3. Then neatly glue your design onto the white background.
18 For a more interesting NOTAN design, draw several shapes within your shapes. Always begin and end on the same side.

Closing Question: How is blending with acrylic different from blending with Oil & Watercolor?
27 Thurs 10/17/13 AB1 & AB5 Painting II Warm up: Why & How is layering acrylic important? Because Acrylic dries fast you can paint in layers. It is important to work from the bottom layer to the top layer. Today s Objectives: Begin/continue your animal in acrylic. Layer from bottom to top. Focus on blends, tints & shades. Add lots of details last. You will have Today through Friday to work on this! (Possibly Monday but I will check on Friday to determine the due date). ***** I will come around to give you a Daily Grade for your Acrylic Techniques. Closing Question: Do you always have to use black for a shade? NO! You can use a darker color or even a complementary color to create a shade. Neither should over power the main color though.

Practice your abstractions. Use Ernst Haeckel s artwork as inspiration. (Side counter in manilla folders). 1 st, draw the whole image. Then practice just drawing half. When you do it on the real paper you will only draw half. But you will have a white and black piece taped together to cut both out at the same time. Closing Question: What was your abstract design you chose for your visual analog?!
