1 Catalog Description Proposed New Undergraduate Curriculum Film and Media The Film and Media (FMA) Program focuses on the development of creative expression and technical skills in film, video, audio, digital media, and new technologies, and the theetical understanding of media and culture. The program recognizes and exples the creative tension between individual expression and the social, political, and economic fces that shape culture at large through the creation and study of film, video, and new media. Students are trained in developing meaningful content as well as craft, they, and practice. In learning independent and mainstream approaches to production and they, graduates will be prepared to develop their own independent productions and to assume a creative role in the motion picture, television and media industries. FMA faculty have received the Oscar, Emmy, Guggenheim, Rockefeller, NEA, Fulbright, Sundance and international film awards and are auths of some of the imptant texts in the field. The department also brings in guest media makers and visiting professs from diverse backgrounds f special lectures and wkshops. Students may select elective courses from throughout the university, including in such areas as creative writing, theater and fine arts. A highly-recognized graduate program offers undergraduates numerous opptunities to wk on advanced productions and participate in advanced research, exhibition and creative wk in the field. Faculty Menting FMA faculty strongly believe in the imptance of close menting. This is particularly imptant in a department that focuses on individual and collabative expression. Once each student who enters as freshmen has completed thirty credits each transfer student has completed fifteen credits, he she will be assigned a faculty ment. The faculty ment will guide each student through his her remaining years at Temple. The faculty and external jurs review student wk submitted to yearly screenings and as ptfolios f capstone courses. Los Angeles and San Francisco Study-Away Programs The Film and Media Department offers a department-run study-away academic and internship program in Los Angeles every semester and a similar program in San Francisco every summer. Because it is a me structured curriculum than the other sequences, students in the BFA programs who wish to go to Los Angeles should plan to do so during the summer semester, after careful planning ahead, to go during the fall semester of their juni year. A sample curriculum grid is included below that demonstrates how a BFA student can go to Los Angeles during the fall of her/his juni year and still complete the BFA in four years. Other Internships and Special Programs Beyond that, FMA has an extensive internship program throughout the year in Philadelphia. Additionally, many ganizations in New Yk, New Jersey, Delaware and Washington, D.C. provide regular opptunities f student professional internships. Temple University offers Temple-run special programs f study and research in Rome and Tokyo.

2 Degree Offerings The Film and Media Department offers both the BFA and BA degrees, as well as a min in Screen Studies BFA degrees: BFA in Film and Media with Concentration in Media BFA in Film and Media with Concentration in Directing BFA in Film and Media with Concentration in Screenwriting BA degrees: BA in Film and Media BA in Film and Media with Concentration in Screen Studies BA in Film and Media with Concentration in Cinematography BA in Film and Media with Concentration in Producing BA in Film and Media with Concentration in Post-Production Mins: Film and Media Min in Screen Studies Initially students declare either the Film and Media Maj the Film and Media Maj with a Screen Studies Concentration. At the completion of their sophome year (60 credits), students may apply to enter one of the upper-level BFA programs with Concentrations in Media, Directing and Screenwriting one of three upper level concentrations: Cinematography, Producing, Post-Production (see below). To Apply f a BFA in Film and Media with Concentrations in Directing, Media Screenwriting The BFA degree is an upper-level program with three distinct concentrations. Students interested in one of the BFA concentrations must submit a program request fm to the department. To be considered students need to complete 60 credits by the end of their sophome year, earn an average of 3.0 in six foundational and intermediate courses 1 (See list below) and provide a ptfolio. The program request fm must be submitted to the department no later than the last day of classes in the semester in which the student reaches sixty credits. Students with less than an average of 3.0 in the six courses may petition the department f admission to one of the BFA concentrations. (See department f details.) Students who were not admitted to one of the BFA concentrations can continue in the BA in Film and Media the BA in Film and Media with a Concentration in Screen Studies apply f one of the three upper-level BA concentrations. Transfer students may apply f the BFA program. Preference will be given to transfer students who have transferred Film and Media courses with B s better. Transfer students must also present a ptfolio. 3 To Apply f a BA in Film and Media with Concentrations in Cinematography, Producing Post-Production Students interested in a BA in one of the three concentrations must have completed five foundational and intermediate courses 2 with an average of 3.0 (See below f course list) and submit a concentration request fm to the department. If a student has less than an average of 3.0 in these courses, the student may petition the department f admission into one of the three upper level concentrations choose to remain in their initial program -- either the BA in Film and Media the BA in Film and Media with a Concentration in Screen Studies. Min in Screen Studies Students from across the university may enroll in the Film and Media Min in Screen Studies. Foundation Courses Students will take Foundation Courses appropriate to the chosen concentration. However, students who choose to switch to another concentration will need to meet with the department chair to discuss how the foundation courses previously completed can apply to the student's new concentration. Summary of Requirements f the Degree of Bachel of and the Bachel of Fine in Film and Media The Bachel of and the Bachel of Fine degree may be conferred upon a student majing in Film and Media by recommendation of the faculty and upon satisfacty completion of a minimum of 120 credit hours. Students must complete: 1. University requirements: New students starting in the academic year are required to complete the General Education (GenEd) curriculum. All students must take a minimum of two writing-intensive courses specified by the maj. The specific writing-intensive courses required f this maj are listed below and identified with the code "WI" in the Attribute column. 2. No me than 21 FMA credits can be transferred to the maj. 3. A student must earn a grade of "C-" better in all Film and Media courses that count towards the degree.. Students may take up to 6 internships credits in Film and Media. 5.
