In AD 801 Sutton Courtenay became a royal vill, with the monastery at Abingdon retaining the church and priest s house. It s is believed that that this was on the site of the Abbey in Sutton Courtenay. Thus the two increasingly powerful institutions of church and Crown were both represented in the village from the beginning of the ninth century. George Orwell (aka Eric Auther Blair) Writer/Author ( ) and Herbert Henry Asquith Prime Minister of the UK ( ), are buried in the Village Churchyard. and are two of the village s more contemporary occupants. Today the Thames side village is thriving, with a beautiful green, public houses, shop/ post office and its proximity to Didcot Parkway Station, making this a village that has remained intact and offers a great sense of community and connectivity. Oxford lies 16 miles North, Abingdon on Thames is just 4.9 miles distance and both offer some of the best performing independent schools in England. 13 interior detail: outside inside connected Designed by renowned architectural practice Anderson Orr, Mill Swathe offers a very connected interior space which thoroughly absorbs its exterior landscape, given the copious use of glass in the elevational treatment. This use of glass has been intelligently applied using extended roof lines, protecting the house from solar gain. The ground floor social spaces are impressive and in particular the principle sitting room, with its soaring ceiling line, which impressively retains a sense of human scale rather than losing this connection with the occupants of the house.

14 interior detail: an impressive sense of calm Approaching 6,000 sq ft, this is a contemporary house that fuses traditional and contemporary architecture with an interior space that flows with ease, whilst retaining that essential separation that is critical for a house of this scale to work for both family and for entertaining guests - in all there are five reception rooms all of which enjoy views over Mill Swathe s private grounds. The house has been beautifully engineered and detailed using traditional techniques complimented by contemporary design.

15 interior detail: an environment in which to entertain At the heart of Mill Swathe is the substantial dining / living / kitchen space, which is fully integrated and extends from the inner galleried hall and has a laundry room / boot room / cloakroom off. This space has the contrast of both a vaulted area and a compressed ceiling line above the kitchen which adds both interest and atmosphere to what is an impressive room. The social spaces arranged along the rear elevation all open on to private elevated decked areas via large glass doors that slide in to concealed wall pockets, a high quality detail that maintains the very clean lines of the house.

The cinema is accessed via a wine cellar foyer area with useful storeroom off. For guests there is an independent suite accessed from the main reception hall - this suite is vaulted with a sitting room (pre-wired for a galley kitchen, should the property s owner consider creating an annexe space), bedroom and bathroom.
