1 Precaster Central Region Issue 12, Spring 2005 On-time Arrivals at Pittsburgh Airport Project: Ohio State Stadium Renovation Designer: Osborn Engineering Contractor: Turner Construction and Kokosing Construction Coreslab Structures Purchases Rinker Indianapolis, Indiana Coreslab Structures, an architectural and structural manufacturer of precast/prestressed concrete products in both Canada and the United States, acquired the Rinker Materials precast/ prestressed concrete manufacturing facility in Indianapolis, Indiana. This acquisition will add additional key market areas and product lines together with an excellent work force to compliment its existing group. Coreslab Structures (Indianapolis) Inc. is able to service construction projects, such as, office buildings, sports facilities, parking structures, and all other types of commercial, industrial and residential projects. Awell designed airport means more than easy arrivals, departures and transfers. A practical, yet appealing, facility is an excellent way to bolster economic development and showcase a community. The 12,080 acre, $1.06 billion Pittsburgh International Airport includes several built-in expansion sites to accomodate the 32 million passengers a year. Two terminals were designed including a 440,000 square-foot landside building for ticketing, baggage handing and passenger pick-up; and a 1.2 million square-foot airside building for boarding and departure. Sidley Precast produced an enclosed precast prestressed parking garage which holds 17,40 cars and a 1,340-foot enclosed moving sidewalk connecting the garage and the landside terminal. The precast concrete, from Sidley Precast, allowed for special architectural elements to be created efficiently providing an attractive, cutting-edge airport for Pittsburgh to capitalize on. 2 Goshen College Connecting Corridor Goshen, Indiana To help promote more intermingling of the underclass students in three existing separate dormitories, Goshen College decided to build a new four-story building to connect the dormitories. Of concern were the tight floor-to-floor heights of the existing dormitories. The design team found precast hollowcore planking was the perfect solution due to its span to depth ratio, strength, durability, speed of construction, low sound transmission qualities and finished ceiling appearance. Creating a totally precast concrete silhouette of the Lake Michigan shoreline was one of the most unusual requests Precast Specialties has ever had. This design is a great example of the specialties Precast Specialties can produce. Evanston Hospital, Evanston, Illinois Parking Garage & Lobby W.E. O Neil Construction called Precast Specialties, Inc. looking for a precast company to do some unique detail pieces for the Evanston Hospital construction project. The project posed some challenges that Precast Specialties was eager to meet. The job entailed more than two years of very hard work and the finished project was worth the effort. Working together with the general contractors and architects, Precast Specialties completed this challenging project, and looks forward to new specialty requests. 4 Kalahari Resort and Water Park Sandusky, Ohio The Prestressed Group (Hollowcore Incorporated) is a major contributor in the construction of Kalahari s new resort in Sandusky, Ohio. The resort consists of a water park, a two-building high-rise hotel and multi-story condominiums. A hollowcore tunnel roof is being constructed in the basement of each building to carry mechanical, electrical and plumbing services between the four separate structures. The resort needs 270 colored precast concrete balconies for the hotel and condominiums on the resort. Additional challenges are arising due to skewed columns that lean to one side of the exterior. The balconies have to be fished through the columns in order to be placed and each balcony is different because of their connection to the skewed columns. Technical Note: The Prestressed Group produced over 355,000 sq. ft. of 8 and 12 Hollowcore planks for the resort, including 11,980 sq. ft. for the water park with two feet of soil applied over the planks which are able to meet the very high loading capacity requirement. Indiana University Bloomington, Indiana Smallwood Plaza has the versatility of two floors of retail space and six floors of student housing. The 370,000 square feet of 8 Hollowcore for the Smallwood Plaza was erected with a 4-man crew over a 17-week period. This was an average of 21,750 sf of Hollowcore erected and grouted per week. The fast, all-season construction of precast concrete also allowed the Structure to be erected throughout the winter Visit or months. 5 Fabcon Panels Helps Wendys Bakery Meet Sanitation Goals Zanesville, Ohio The large amounts of flour dust and steam that come from baking 1,200 buns per minute can create a sanitation nightmare for a bakery. That s why Wendy s Bakery chose to use Fabcon s eight-inch precast insulated concrete panels for their new facility. Fabcon s panels have a smooth side that can be covered with epoxy paint to eliminate the crevices that naturally form in other building materials thus providing walls that are very durable and easy to clean. The new Wendy s Bakery facility encompasses approximately 168,000 square feet and houses two high-speed lines that produce 1,200 buns/minute. Visit Precaster: Fabcon Architect: Suhar & Associates Architects Contractor: Exxcel Project Management Appalachian Gas Exploration Eastern Vault Company provides pump stations, spill containment vessels, and box culverts (pictured at left), as well as other precast concrete products to Consol Energy / CNX Gas, LLC, for the exploration and construction of natural gas pump stations and pipelines. The precast structures provide for transportation of heavy loads of equipment and supplies to previously inaccessible locations. Precast Box Culverts are an excellent alternative to conventional short-span bridge construction methods. Disaster Recovery Devastating flooding in 2004 required rapid precast bridge installations in remote, rural areas of West Virginia.
