25 Simon McTavish, Northwest Company Item # Appin, Scotland (faint straightline at upper right) to Montreal, addressed to Alexander Stewart, care of Mr. Simon McTavish, (McTavish was the head of the Northwest Company.), rated pd 2/8 and then 1N7 from Halifax, NS to Montreal. A er the NWC and HBC merged in 1821, Stewart would become HBC Chief factor at Fort Chipewyan, Athabaska. The le er appears to be from his father or another Stewart. $500 Item # SFL Quebec dateline KJul 4, 1822 to Liverpool, England, opened and more message added, r ed to Bern, Switzerland, ra ns P1/11 (BNA), 8 Bri sh and then 19, 8 1/2, 40, ms 4 on reverse. $400

26 Item #57. LANCASTER straightline on reverse of 1826 SFL dateline Fraser s Point to Montreal, ms 12 Dec 26 beneath straightline, ms Paid 7. The le er is from Donald Fraser regarding cu ng cedar for lumber rather than firewood as prices are too cheap. Fraser s Point is on the south shore of St. Lawrence, opposite Lancaster. The le er was ferried across the river privately where it was mailed. Scarce. $500 Item # Montreal to Quebec, dateline Montreal 4 May 1833, ms Steam Boat, rare early example of St. Lawrence steamboat marking, without any rate. Scarce. Unlisted in Parsons. Le er asks for a report on his aunt and how she is situated, what her husband does... She used to be a fine looking woman, God knows what she is now. $500

27 Item # SFL Quebec (Aug 22, 1834) to Madiera, Portugal, favoured by William Finlay. From the extensive wine merchant correspondence. Mail to Portugal outside this correspondence is rare. $200 Item # SFL dateline Indiana 30 Jany 1839 to Niagara via York 20 Feb 1839 manuscript postmark, ms Paid 4 1/2d The le er is in rela on to a license for a hotel. Indiana was an old Indian village, 1 km north of present day Cayuga, Ontario. $100

28 Item # SFC likely from Quebec (May 8, 1850) and place on the Quebec-Montreal steamboat arriving at Quebec May 9 (bs), while aboard the le er was struck with the old style oval Steamboat Le er Q 184 to Toronto, May 11 rated 3/- due. The oval Q was revived between May and June 1850 and all examples are struck poorly. This is excep onally good compared to the very few others recorded. Illustrated in Parsons, page 263. Ex Parsons. $400 Item # SFL dateline Quebec 11th June 1850 to Montreal, no postal ra ngs because the nota on with a parcel exempted it from a rac ng postage. This is a consignee le er. Shippers were allowed to send a le er with a shipment of goods without being charged postage. The marking with a parcel was intended to ensure the le er went free. Scarce and an excellent item for a steamboat collector. $150

29 Item # SFL Paid at Quebec, LC (Dec ) to Paris, France, via closed bag via Cunard Asia from New York to Liverpool and London hs (Paid EF 10 JA ), red Calais, oval PD and reverse with Paris (11 Jan 54), 1843 Anglo French postal treaty stated 3/4 Stg per ounce of 1/8 Stg per 1/2 oz Bri sh inland and packet rate plus 4d colonial postage (total 2/0 Stg per 1/2 oz). plus 5d per 1/2oz and as a double rate = 10d for a total of 2/10 Stg or 3/2 Cy. A rare 1/2 oz to 1/2 oz double rate cover into France. Le er is from a printer reques ng specimen sheets of latest typography.
