Until the last week of his long and vibrant life, Ray was bidding on and buying items for his collections. 4 12 s 15 s T he Chicago School of collecting is known for specialists in one or two values of a & particular issue or series of issues. Prominent collectors from the Chicago School were Paul Rohloff ( ), Bob Paliafito ( ), Leon Hyzen ( ), Tony Russo, Dr. Joe Rorke and Sheldon Friedman (all three specialized in the 2 Black Jack). Still active today is Michael Laurence, a collector and former Chicago resident. Together with Ray Vogel, these collectors formed significant collections focused on a single issue. Essays, proofs, stamps, varieties and multiples tell part of the story, while covers complete the narrative by showing how the stamps were used. Ray s eye for unusual covers and discipline in choosing quality examples greatly influenced the development of his 12 and 15 collection. It is, without question, the best collection of its kind ever formed.
