Hugo Item Ship Letter (crown) Montreal 1822, stampless folded letter from Montreal to Devon England with Ship Letter (crown) Montreal, Ship Letter Deal and London transit (b/s). Rated 4/, 4/4, 4/9 (all crossed out) and changed to 5/. The rates represent double 2/2 (1/2 Falmouth packet plus 1/ inland to London) and 5/ total which includes additional postage from London to Devon. No BNA rate marking. A rare and uncommonly clear example of this often faint and poorly struck single ring oval crown Ship Letter Montreal. Ex De Volpi. $2,000.00

Entered at Quebec as ship letter (Ship Letter crown Quebec type IV) rated 1/4½ plus 1/4 total 2/8½ collect. Unquestionably a very nice piece! $1, Item Montreal Ship , stampless folded letter paid 9d to Montreal and carried from Montreal by a private sailing ship to Liverpool. Charged 1/7 Stg representing 8d ship fee and 11d inland to London England. For a short period at the end of the 1830 s, Montreal used a ship straight line h/s. Since most ship letters for Montreal were handled through and marked at Quebec, this Montreal marking is rarely seen. Only 4 examples have been recorded. Letter enclosed. A Rarity!
