NEWSLETTER OF THE THREE FORKS TREASURE HUNTERS CLUB VOLUME XXII ISSUE 8 OCTOBER 2005 EDITOR: Chuck Marcum PHONE: (918) graytcote@cox.net The Outpost is published monthly by the Three Forks Treasure Hunters Club. The club is a member of the Federation of Metal Detector and Archeological Clubs Inc. It is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion of metal detecting as a hobby. No brand or model of metal detector is endorsed by the club. Membership is open to the public with the only requirement being that all members follow the Treasure Hunters Code of Ethics. Club dues are $25.00 per family yearly. Any comments or stories that you would like to contribute to your newsletter are always welcome. MEETINGS: First FRIDAY of each month. TIME : 7:15 P.M PLACE: Wagoner Community Building at the corner of Jefferson and Cherokee streets in Wagoner Oklahoma. NEXT MEETING: October 7, 2005 BOARD MEETING: The second Thursday of every month at Martin s Restaurant on Hwy. 16 in Okay Ok. at 7:00 P.M. CLUB PO BOX: P.O. Box 753 Wagoner, Ok CLUB OFFICERS: PRESIDENT: Gilbert Leake VICE PRESIDENT: Gary Young SECRETARY: Shawn Gilbert TREASURER: Cathy Young BOARD MEMBERS: Nancy Coffey Gene Coffey Jerry Harlin Vicki Lang Chuck Marcum Grover Tillman Mary Tracy Francis Tracy Andrew Winters

Secretary s Notes September 2nd meeting was called to order at 7:25PM. There were 27 members present. There was no old business to discuss, so we went straight to the new business. There was mention of an essay contest for the kids belonging to the FMDAC, ages 5 to 15, to win a metal detector. We received our new FMDAC card. It was brought up to try something new with our raffle to keep our club from losing money. We are going to have two raffles, one will be for prizes and silver rounds provided by the club, and one will be for the 50/50 pot. This will be a three month trial run to see if it benefits the club. We also discussed raising of the club dues. After a little bit of discussion it was brought up to drop the FMDAC dues of $5 and making the club dues $25. Anyone wanting to continue in the FMDAC can pay for that due separately. It will be $10 per person. Shawn Gilbert made the motion to drop the FMDAC and keep dues at $25. Gary Young seconded the motion. We voted and it passed unanimously. Club dues are coming up. Anyone paying their club dues by the November meeting will be put in a drawing for a silver round. The club membership is from February to February. Gary Young brought up buying a laser printer for the club to print the newsletters and flyers. The club spends at least $30 a month at Kinkos for printing. A black and white laser printer would save the club money on printing. The club voted on the purchase of the printer and it passed unanimously. Our club has an address now, it is threeforkstreasurehunters@yahoo.com We moved on to the raffles and finds of the month. Winners of the drawings: Display: Chuck Marcum 50/50: Tom Neville Donation: Roxy Tillman Attendance: Roxy Tillman The Golden Eagle was won by Jim Simmons for his watch fob. Congrats Jim! And last but not least Eddie gave out the next clue for the mystery token. Meeting adjourned! See ya at the next meeting! Your Secretary, October 7 October 9 October 13 October 15, 16 October 21, 22, 23 October 23 October 28, 29 November 5 November 6 November 19 November 20 December 2 Upcoming Events In this Issue 3 Forks Club Meeting GPS Class 3 Forks Board Meeting Diamond Hunt Outing WWATS Rally 2005 ITTHC Club Hunt Cemetery Workshop Agency Cemetery Cleanup Agency Outing Harnage Cemetery Cleanup Harnage Outing 3 Forks Christmas Dinner I have included the third quarter totals of the Find of the Month Contest. You still have two months left in this year's competition. Get out there and find some good stuff! We have all kind of activities planned for the coming months. We will be going Diamond Hunting in a couple of weeks. I ll be giving a GPS Class this month. We have two Cemetery Cleanups and outings in November. We are going to try to have two a month, this will be in addition to our regular club outings. Club elections will be held in November. We will take nominations at the October Meeting. I have inserted a list of Officers and positions including duties and approximate commitment time. Think about which position you will take. Don t forget about the Cemetery Workshop being held on October 28th and 29th. Keith Wills has reminded me about the WATTS Rally 2005 taking place on the 21st through the 23rd. For more info you can go to I ll have Membership Applications for the EOCPO at the meeting so don t forget to join. Shawn Gilbert Shawn, Gary, Tom, Mark, and I represented our hobby, the EOCPO, and the OCPA at the Genealogical Ancestor Fair.

Dates set for next Agency and Harnage Cemetery Cleanups On November 5th we will continue with our ongoing project at the Old Agency Cemetery north of Muskogee. Indian Territory, Three Forks, and Tulsey Town Treasure Hunting Clubs along with the OCPA began this effort last March and April. In two cleanup days we cleared the brush out of two thirds of the east half of this badly neglected cemetery. This is a very historical and unique cemetery because of the large number of Creek Freedman buried there. We will meet at 9:00 on November 5th at the Barking Frog Citgo Convenience Store. It is located on the East side of US 69 north of Muskogee and south of the Arkansas River. Coming from the north on US 69 toward Muskogee, just after you cross the Arkansas River the store will be on your left (east). On November 5th we will be doing some more brush clearing. Then on November 6th we will be hunting the pasture east of the cemetery. We need all club members to come out and support this worthwhile project. You have to come out Saturday to be able to hunt on Sunday. If you are unable to do much physical work just come out on Saturday to show your support then you can still hunt. We need chain saws. Weed eaters with metal blades will cut the honeysuckle vines a whole lot easier. Some of the things found east of the cemetery on March 20th were Eagle Buttons, a Half Dime, Shield and V Nickels, Pieces of Spurs, a Big Penny, Silver Brooch, a Great Coat Button, Indian Head Pennies, and Bullets. On November 19th we will start on the Harnage Cemetery located in the Gooseneck Bend area of Muskogee it is EOCPO Club Member Don Harnage s family cemetery going back to the Cherokee Nation days. This cemetery unlike Agency will probably be a one day project depending on how much help we have. It will involve some brush clearing. There is a Confederate veteran buried there with a Confederate Cross Stone. We will meet at the convenience store at Chandler and SH 165 (Muskogee Turnpike) on the East side of Muskogee at 9:00. Take the Chandler exit off of the Muskogee Turnpike or US 165 and the store is located on the east side of the Turnpike along the service road. On November 20th we will get to hunt some property in the area. The Gooseneck Bend area is on the west side of a bend in the Arkansas River just south of Muskogee. Gooseneck Bend had some Cherokee House Sites and there were also some Pre and Civil War Camps in the area. We are planning on having two cleanups and hunt outings a month during the fall, winter, and spring seasons. Not only will we be able to save our history by preserving cemeteries and burial grounds it also gives us opportunities to have more club outings. Early Dues Raffle If you pay your dues by the November Meeting your name will be put into an early Dues Raffle. We will be drawing one name at the Christmas Party that will win a Silver Round Membership Applications will be available at the meeting and I will put a copy in this newsletter beginning next month. Newsletter Info The club has bought a laser printer so that I can print the newsletter and hunt fliers. The board has decided that if you have an address and are getting the newsletter by you will not get an additional newsletter mailed to you. You can print your ed version on your printer or I can print you a copy and give it to you at the meeting. Just let me know if you need one. Everyone receiving their newsletter by mail only will continue receiving it that way. Diamond Hunting Demo at 10:00 Saturday We will be having a free 20 minute group demonstration on Diamond Hunting 101 at 10:00 on October 15th for all of the early arrivals. Some of us will be meeting at the park entrance at 9:15. Once we get 15 people to enter at once all of us will get the half off admission price which will be $3.00. Just tell them you are with the Oklahoma Treasure Hunters Group. My cell number is (918) if you need it. I ll see you there.

The Mystery Token Game Is Back! It was a lot of fun playing this years ago. Eddie Tamplin was the last one to find it so he has hid it. Eddie will provide two clues a month. One will be printed in the newsletter and one will be handed out at the monthly club meeting until the Token has been found. The finder will win a Gold Coin and will have the privilege of hiding it for the next game. Clue #1 I am the Mystery Token, mystery is my game, I am a shiny round disc and Fisher is my name. I have been north, south, east, and west and only two people know where I rest. When I am found by young or old, this silver disc will turn to gold!!!!!!!! Now go I say and say I go, to the next club meeting, where there is more info Clue #2 I hide amongst the waters and the trees and if you don t watch out, you ll walk right around me. Clue#3 I lie near a once thriving & historic community of which name I can see! Surrounded by many modern day objects of wood, asphalt, stone, and steel Clue#4 Once I could see Ft. Gibson, Ft. Davis, & Rex except now there s all these trees! Now form a triangle of which I am inside & you ll be getting closer to where I hide. From now on this will be known as the 3 Forks Triangle. Clue#5 Lying here in the 3 Forks triangle I can see south, east & west, but I am blocked by an object which prevents me from seeing north & the noise of the cars & trucks prevents me from sleeping day & night. Clue#6 Have you found all the points of the Three Forks Triangle? If not get out your map and mark the spots. I lie near some point of interest. Clue#7 Tall grass now surrounds the back of the sight, you drive by me day & night... GPS Class I will be giving a GPS class at the Oklahoma Department of Transportation Building in Tulsa at 2:00 on Sunday October 9th for anyone wanting to attend. It will be a handson field class mostly on the basics, including how to enter coordinates, setting waypoints, and following the GPS to a destination. I will cover the basics, we ll set up every ones GPS Receivers, then run through a practice course in the form of a Geocache. Geocaching is a sport that people in 200 countries are playing now with their GPS Receivers. We have two Geocaches hidden in the park at the ODOT Building. One of them is The Bedstead Bank which is a Multi-Cache that I also set up as a training course for learning to use a GPS. For this cache you will start out by entering the latitude and longitude for the first leg into the GPS, then follow the receiver to a spot where you will find another set of coordinates to enter which will lead you to the next set. Finally the fourth leg will get you to the hidden Bedstead Bank Cache. After you find the Multi-Cache you can find the harder Back Through the Years at Bedstead Bridge Cache. To view these cache pages go to select hide and seek a cache, select key word then type in the cache name. I will have some extra GPS Receivers for anyone wanting to use them. Bring your GPS Owner Manuals and charged batteries. There is an old barn out there you can hunt around, a pond with stocked fish, and picnic tables. The Department of Transportation Building is between 36th St. N. and 46th St. N. on the service road on the west side of Highway or call me if you have any questions my cell number is and address is graytcote@cox.net.

It is time again to elect Club Officers and to fill club positions. Anyone is welcome to run for any club office or fill any position. It doesn t matter if you ve been in the club for 20 years or twenty days. You don t need any experience and there will be plenty of people to help you out. We cannot have a club if we can t fill most of these offices. It s as simple as that. Most of these positions only require about 4 hours of your time a month and that time is spent at the club and board meetings. I will attempt to list the club offices, positions, their descriptions, and the approximate commitment time.
