In addition, there will be a silent auction. There will also be the usual show and tells and raffles. January minutes Pete called the meeting to order at 7:00. The Treasurers and Secretaries reports were read and accepted. Old and new businesses were discussed. Show and tells were presented. Raffle prizes were then drawn and the YN and 50/50 prizes were selected. The program was a planning session for 2017 programs. 2 Secretary's Report The members in attendance accepted the Secretary s report as published in the February newsletter. A detailed breakdown of the club income and expenses is available at the meeting. Old Business We missed the deadline for listing the spring show in the Central States and ILNA journals. Tim produced this years membership cards. Discussion of one year terms. New Business VFW building is up for sale. Need to review our contract. Board Meeting On January 17, Pete, Char, Tim, Harold, Al, Guy, Howard, and Jim met to discuss club business for the February meeting. There are eight raffle prizes and one member s prizes. This month three raffle prizes are silver. With all these good prizes the more tickets you buy the better your chances to win. VFW 1307, 1601 Weld Rd., Elgin IL Show and Tell Jim D. showed a 1913-P type 1 Buffalo nickel found in circulation. Mac spoke of a coin show in Will County, a Florida magazine about treasure hunting and showed an Irish 1 punt with an engrailed edge. Harold brought in a 1/10 ounce silver token from the HCC Holiday dinner and a $2 red deal star note. Howard showed a 2016 gold walking liberty half. Dave S. Spoke of a roll search of leftover coin rolls from the holiday dinner. Pete showed a medal from Will County for Illinois sesquicentennial and a certified 1996-W dime. 3 Editorial P marks the spot. This year for the first time ever, cents struck at the Philadelphia mint will display a P mintmark. It will appear only on cents struck this year. When 2018 comes around the letter will disappear as if it never existed. The reason for the change is to mark the 225 th anniversary of the mint. Knowing some conspiracy buffs they probably think that President Trump ordered the change to honor Russian President Vladimir Putin. Similar theories came about when the Roosevelt dime was introduced and the JS initials stood for Josef Stalin and again in 1964 when Gilroy Roberts initials on the half were mistaken for a hammer and sickle. Since mintmarks are now part of the master hub, the only way for a coin to have no mintmark is from a filled die. It would be interesting to see if any show up. VFW for sale. Last month officials of VFW post 1307 announced they were putting the building up for sale. The reasons for this decision include a declining membership and many much needed repairs. The asking price for the property is $ They estimate a possible sale will take between 9 months and a year to complete. Our contract with the VFW extends until December this year. VFW officials say our spring coin show should be unaffected but our fall show may be in jeopardy. The VFW plans on continuing operations by renting space from the American Legion. As for our club, we may need to start looking for a new home. While we don t look forward to returning to the Moose we may have to if a better location is not found. Please bring any suggestions for meeting locations to the next meeting Dues. Its that time of year again when I have to remind our members to pay their dues. As with the previous year, dues are $20 for a family membership. The membership includes the member, a spouse and children under 18. With your membership you receive the electronic newsletter and are eligible for the members prize at the meeting. Each family member will also receive a collectable token that is given at the coin shows and free admission to the summer picnic. Coins of the month Living people on US coins This month s coins of the month are the commemorative coins that featured portraits of people still alive when the coin was issued. The practice of not having a living person on our coins stems back to the 1790 s when President Washington objected to placing his image on a coin. The policy became law in the 1860 s when Spencer Clark put his face on fractional currency and Congress was not amused. Of the four coins in this article, three are halves and one silver dollar. The first coin is the Alabama Centennial. Although Alabama celebrated its centennial in 1919, the coin didn t come out until The obverse shows the states first Governor William Bibb and the then current Governor Thomas Kilby. Kilby was born in 1865 and died in The current value for this coin ranges from $195 in Au to $2,250 in MS65. The next coin is the Sesquicentennial of American Independence. Issued in 1926 this coin was struck to raise funds for an international exposition in Philadelphia. Again, the coin features two portraits. The portraits are of President Washington and President Coolidge. Coolidge was born in 1873 and February 2017 Award Winning Elgin Coin Club Newsletter Page 3

4 lived until The coins are currently valued between $70 in Au and $1,750 in MS65. The last half in this group is the Lynchburg Sesquicentennial of The obverse features then Senator Carter Glass, a notable resident of Lynchburg. Glass, who lived from 1858 to 1946 also served as Secretary of the Treasury and as a member of Congress. The value of this coin ranges from $200 in AU to $275 in MS65. The final coin of this article is the 1995 Special Olympics dollar. Eunice Kennedy Shriver, sister of John, Robert and Edward Kennedy is shown on the obverse. Born in 1921 and passing in 2009, Eunice founded Camp Shriver which later evolved into the Special Olympics program. This coin Is only collected in high grade mint state and proof.
