Presented by Jon Davis of Wild Birds Unlimited Manager of Wild Birds Unlimited will speak on 3 Simple Things You Can Do To Improve the Quantity and Quality of Birds In Your Yard. He will also speak on attracting specific birds to your area. Jon Davis Owner Profile on his web site Jon has had a passion for nature, the outdoors, and photography since he was 8 and received his first camera, a Kodak 110 with a flip flash. As a long time customer of Wild Birds Unlimited in Aberdeen, he was crestfallen when he received an in August 2009 from the store s original owner, William Kastern, stating the store was going to have to close come December due to Mr. Kastern s health. Jon and his wife Rebecca immediately began talks with William and successfully purchased the store on December 1, Jon s enthusiasm for birding had gone beyond a mere hobby and now he has been blessed to be able to have a more positive and direct influence on other s birding experience. He can talk for hours on end about birding and above all else, enjoys helping people have the best possible bird feeding experience. He knows first hand what horrible bird feeding can be like with the impossible feeders and cheap seed vs. what can only be described as a pure joyful

2 experience when everything just clicks. Jon s favorite feeders are the Dinner Bell ( for its endless versatility ) and the medium Quick Clean Finch feeder ( there is NO better finch feeder on the market anywhere. Period. ) His favorite seed is the Choice or Supreme Blends ( too hard to decide ). And, his favorite bird is the hummingbird. He finds their flying abilities simply mesmerizing and recounts a time years ago when he positioned himself inches from a very popular feeder and in just a few minutes found himself in the middle of a swarm of hummingbirds mere inches away from his face. He said that is something everyone should experience. INSTRUCTIONS FOR SIGNING UP FOR THE MEETING/LUNCHEON: Lunch will follow our program and business meeting. Please note that you must notify Ginny in your if you will attend the meeting, but are not staying for lunch. ALSO, please note that you should receive an or phone call confirming that we received your RSVP within a few days of your . If you do not receive a confirmation, please get in touch with Ginny promptly! In the event that you make a luncheon reservation and find that you are unable to attend, you must cancel 48 hours in advance to avoid being charged for the lunch. Husbands and guests are always welcome to attend the meetings. If you are bringing a guest, please tell Ginny when making your reservations. This month s luncheon will be a sit down and has been selected by Chef Todd and Jane Waldemar. If you have food allergies or special diets, please put that in your as well and Chef Todd will make accommodations for you. A vegetarian meal is always available, just let Ginny know that you would like one when you RSVP.

4 A Message From Our President Sue Huston thanks all the garden clubs for their donations to purchase daffodil bulbs to plant at Weymouth. They will now be able to plant 700 bulbs!!! At our October Meeting, I will be passing around a sign up sheet for our Christmas luncheon, December 10, at the Pinehurst Members Club. There will be three selections and the menu for each selection will be in the sign up sheets. I look forward to seeing you at the October 15 th meeting. Jane Waldemar

5 It s Holiday Basket Time! Each year at our Holiday Luncheon we have a fantastic raffle for baskets filled with wonderful treats and items. The funds raised from this raffle provide a book scholarship for a deserving SCC horticulture student. We ask that you donate an item/items of your choice. The basket committee will then arrange the items by themes Christmas, wine, books, gardening, hostess gift, cooking, holiday decorating, golf, knitting, sports, spa, tea etc. etc. and decorate the baskets that will be auctioned at the Holiday Luncheon on Dec.10 th at the Pinehurst Members Club. If you prefer to donate money we are happy to shop for items. Please have your donations to me by Dec. 3 rd. For you convenience, you may bring your donations to our meeting on November 12 th. I will have bags in the club house lobby for your convenience to place donations in or if you prefer you may drop them off any time at my home. The door to the glass enclosed porch on the back of our home is always open. 81 Glasgow Dr., the 1st house on the right when you come in the 211 gate. Our driveway is on Kilbride Dr. We need the support of all of our members to make this a great success. Please donate an item or two of your choice to help a local student who shares our love of gardening and our desire to make our little piece of earth more beautiful through landscaping. Call Johanna Westmen to pre-order or plants may be purchased the day of the sale. October 17 (Saturday) Star Gazing & Picnic in the Gardens. 6 PM, A FREE Family event in the gardens. Bring the family, a picnic supper, a blanket or chairs and flash light. Join Cindy Bingham Director of the Planetarium at Neuseway Nature Park for a look into the night sky to identify stars. Outside the Ball Visitors Center of Sandhills Horticultural Gardens. Sunset at 6:41 pm-dark at 7pm.
