3 Arts and Crafts Painting Flowers In this five week course we will be painting flowers using watercolours. Explore loose and more detailed ways of recording information using a range of media. We will focus on composition, colour relationships and colour harmony. Suitable for complete beginners or those with experience. 3 Tutor: Emily Jolley Day: Tuesday Time: 2-4pm Duration: 5 sessions Dates: 5 th June 3 rd July Cost: ( 37.50) Venue: Ivory Place Watercolour: Painting the Evening Sky Paint the evening sky from Brighton beach using watercolours. Learn how to record the light over the sea using quick washes that describe that atmospheric moment, as the sun goes down. Watercolour is a great medium to use as it is light, dries quickly and can create some beautiful layered washes. Suitable for those with some experience of using watercolours. Tutor: Emily Jolley Day: Wednesday Time: 7-9pm Duration: 5 sessions Dates: 6 th June 4 th July Cost: ( 37.50) Venue: Ivory Place Creating a Sketchbook Discover the joys of keeping a sketchbook and visual diary, they are a wonderful way of increasing your creativity and keeping memories. Learn how to sketch with confidence, try out different materials and learn new techniques through simple exercises. It s not all about drawing; you can write, doodle or use collage in your own creative space. Bring any drawing materials you have and a hard back sketchbook, ideally with watercolour paper. Some materials will be provided for you to try out. Suitable for beginners and those with some experience. 4 Arts and Crafts Life Drawing Summer School On this four day course you will have the opportunity to practice a variety of drawing exercises to help you understand and represent the human figure. Working from a life model you will create a range of drawings using different media in a friendly and supportive environment. This course is suitable for those with some basic drawing skills and complete beginners to life drawing. By the end of the course you will have experimented with a range of media to draw the figure, practised ways of measuring proportion to inform your drawings, seen an improvement in your drawings and feel more confident and better equipped to go to other life drawing classes and/or drop in sessions around the city. Cost includes basic materials and a fee for the model. Tutor: Anna Blencowe Days: Monday-Thursday Time: 10am - 4pm Duration: 4 days Dates: 20 th 23 rd August Cost: 190 Venue: Ivory Place Fashion, Sewing and Textiles Introduction to Fashion Illustration Develop the skills needed for you to create your own fashion illustrations. On this taster course you will create a mood board of ideas, experiment with a range of art materials to create visual textures and colours, develop preliminary sketches and create your own fashion illustrations. This course is suitable for someone who has a keen interest in fashion and clothing and has some basic drawing skills. 5 Fashion, Sewing and Textiles Machine Sewing for Beginners Do you want to learn how to use a sewing machine? This course is aimed at beginners and will teach you how to thread your machine, adjust stitch size and styles and trouble shoot basic problems as they arise. During this practical course you will gain confidence in using the sewing machine whilst creating a range of items including a cushion cover, tote bag, purse and simple clothes. Learn how to take accurate personal measurements to draft a block pattern (a template for any style of skirt or trousers that you wish to create.) You will create samples of different pattern cutting techniques to enable you to adapt your block to a chosen design. This course is suitable for those who have a basic level of sewing skills and have experience of using commercial patterns. Pattern drafting requires you to follow written instructions which use basic mathematical skills (divide, add, subtract). You don t have to calculate in your head but you will need to have these basic maths skills to get the most from the course. 6 Fashion, Sewing and Textiles Next Steps in Crochet A follow-on from the beginners' crochet course. Building on the basic crochet stitches this course will use more complex patterns worked in the round, to create a larger piece of crochet. We will begin working on a basket pattern or three dimensional fruit shape and then move on to additional projects such as a bag, flowers or small toy. As this is an improver's class some previous experience of basic crochet is required e.g. how make a slip knot, a foundation chain, joining into a ring, double crochet and treble crochet stitches. Materials can be purchased from the tutor to take home. Please feel free to bring your own hooks and yarn if you have them. Tutors: Laura O Sullivan & Jayne Eagle Day: Thursday Time: 10.30am pm Duration: 5 sessions Dates: 14 th June 12 th July Cost: 65 ( 40) Dressmakers Stitch Off (A Summer School for Sewists) Join us for a week of sewing and make a garment (or garments) of your choice! Whether you re a complete beginner or have some experience of dressmaking you will spend the week cutting and stitching your way to a new wardrobe (although maybe not a whole one!) Please come to the first session with a pattern and fabric for a garment (or garments) you d like to make. 7 Fashion, Sewing and Textiles Pattern Cutting Summer School Join us for a week of pattern cutting and create a bespoke pattern for a garment design of your choice (choose from skirt, trousers, shirt, blouse, dress). You will draft a block pattern, create a toile to make sure your pattern fits, adapt your block pattern to your own design and then create the final garment. The course is suitable for those who have a basic level of sewing skills and have experience of using commercial patterns. Pattern drafting requires you to follow written instructions which use basic mathematical skills (divide, add, subtract). You don t have to calculate in your head but you will need to have these basic maths skills to get the most from the course. The tutor will help you to make the best decision on the type of garment to choose, based on your level of experience and skills. Please bring some ideas with you for a range of garment choices. Tutor: Jo Bunner Day: Monday Friday Time: 10am - 4pm Duration: 5 days Dates: 13 th 17 th August Cost: 180 Crochet for Beginners A course for complete beginners or those who have tried before and need a reminder. Learn the basics of crochet beginning with a slip knot, foundation chain and working double and treble crochet. We'll use these skills to create circular or square motifs which can be joined or worked on to make blankets. Those wanting something more advanced can try making crocheted flowers that can be made into brooches, hair accessories or embellishments for bags and shoes. All materials will be provided for the workshop and can be purchased from the tutor to take home. You are welcome to bring your own hooks and yarn if you have them. We will practice 'taking it off auto' by using the camera's creative controls such as aperture and shutter speed. We will also discuss ways of improving composition and using available light. This three week course will be held at different locations within the city (e.g. the seafront, city centre and Preston Park) and will be as practical as possible. There will wet weather alternative locations if necessary. For the first session we will meet at Friends Centre, Brighton Junction in the cafe. Some previous experience with a camera is useful, e.g. able to 'point & shoot'. Bring your (any!) camera and comfortable shoes. 9 Photography Improve Your Photography A one day workshop designed to improve your photography and enable you to move beyond the auto settings. We will look at the camera's creative controls such as aperture and shutter speed, ways of improving composition and using available light. Some previous experience with a camera is useful, e.g. able to 'point & shoot'. Bring your (any!) camera- although you will probably get more out of the course with a DSLR or Bridge camera rather than a compact. Tutor: Laura O Sullivan Day: Saturday Time: 10.30am pm Duration: 1 day Dates: 30 th June Cost: 40 9 Languages Spanish Film Club Explore the Spanish language and culture through Spanish film. This workshop is for anyone who has grasped the basics in Spanish, loves Spanish films and would like to improve their knowledge of the Spanish language by developing their vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. In the morning we will watch a film and then discuss this in the afternoon. Films will be shown in Spanish with Spanish subtitles. Activities and discussions will be solely in Spanish. 11 Information Technology Brush up Your IT Skills Excel Part 1 Develop your skills in Excel: This course will look at the key aspects of Excel including entering, formatting and editing data. Learn how to use formulas (including use of brackets), functions (including sum and average) and chart options including using a column and pie chart. This course is suitable for those who are familiar with using a computer. Tutor: David Purkiss Day: Tuesday Time: 6-8pm Duration: 5 sessions Dates: 5 th June 3 rd July Cost: ( 37.50) 11 Brush up Your IT Skills Excel Part 2 Develop your skills further in Excel: create spreadsheets, sort and filter data, use formulas, functions, link worksheets and create and modify charts. You will learn to use additional functions to enable you to analyse your data more thoroughly, including IF, SUMIF and COUNTIF functions and how to create scatter diagrams, line or column graphs from your results. This is an intermediate course for those who are already familiar with Excel. You will be encouraged to experiment with different techniques and research your own ideas. This course will allow learners to build a portfolio of artwork suitable to apply for further courses or for your own personal development. You should be prepared to undertake approximately 1 to 2 hours of study, at home, each week. You will create a varied portfolio of artwork ranging from experimental ideas through to more developed pieces. You should be prepared to undertake approximately 2 hours of study, at home, each week. 13 City & Guilds Fashion Courses 2018/19 Fashion & Dressmaking Level 1 Develop your own designs for a garment through research and experimentation with different media. Learn how to make two garments from a choice of unlined skirt, simple trousers, shirt or top. You will choose the material, learn how to measure and fit your garments, create samples of different sewing techniques and produce your own items of clothing. You will be required to keep and submit a folder of sewing samples, a folio of design work, and sketchbooks of your design ideas and development from design through to the final garment. You will be expected to undertake at least 2 hours of study at home each week. This course is suitable for those with some experience of using a sewing machine.
