1 PATCHWORDS President s Letter Hey Quilters, Fall is in the air! I m so glad the lower temperatures and cooler mornings have finally arrived. After such a hot summer it s definitely time. We had such a blast at Fall Retreat, Quilting with the Stars. If you missed it, whatever happens at retreat stays at retreat. A great big thank you to Jennifer Adams and Ruth Gross for making it such a success. We got to relax, laugh and just have fun. Many of us enjoyed walks on the beach and time away from everyday things. The September program meeting was UFO s, I hope you were able to thin out your UFOs and pick up a few new ones. Oh my, all those wonderful aprons, I have said this before and I ll say it again, I just love how you all get into it and participate with each month s new theme. So just to prepare you; October wear pink for breast cancer awareness month, November wear your favorite team shirt/or colors, and January will be ugly sweater month. This month, we celebrate Crazy Quilts, Sarah has arranged for our member, Estelle Sprinkle to do a class in November. You will have another chance at the meetings to sign up for the President s Challenge strings are things that go bump in the night, due in May at the joint meeting. The Houston Bus trip is also coming up in fast and in November we will be enjoying a Thanksgiving Potluck at the day meeting, immediately after the program. December brings the Christmas Luncheon, so be sure to sign up. In February, the big Ta! Da! Our grand finale! and the most wonderful Quilt Show. So get busy, get quilting and get those quilts finished for the show. Keep quilting and as always in stitches, Carolyn Pic President 1

5 WHO Is Connie Bernard? I was born and raised in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. My husband and I have been married over 50 years. We have two grown daughters and three grandchildren. I ve had several different jobs outside the home over the years, all administrative type positions. I really don t have any interests other than needlework. I have always enjoyed sewing but when my husband was on a remote assignment and both girls were in school, I took a class in needlepoint at a local craft shop. That same year my mother and sister were knitting, renewing my interest in knitting. Later on I started cross-stitching and continued with that for a number of years. I tried decorative painting at one time but that wasn t for me. My first attempt at quilting was in the late 70 s. I took a beginning quilt class using cereal boxes for templates, tracing the shape on the fabric and cutting each piece one by one. It was a simple nine patch and I bought the thickest batting, thinking bigger was better. At that time I didn t have the patience to stick with it and I never finished it and gave up quilting. I have always enjoyed sewing and continue sewing for myself and children. In the late 90 s I took a quilt class with May Mason at Joann s and I ve been hooked ever since. If I go out of town for a week or two, I really miss sewing and can t wait to get home. I don t have just one favorite quilt. My favorite ones get finished, quilted and bound. I have a fondness for reproduction fabrics and patterns. I also prefer to do smaller blocks. Occasionally I ll work on something different. I really enjoy machine piecing. Rotary cutters have made quilting so much easier. Without them, I still wouldn t be quilting! I do some applique but it isn t my favorite. I like all the varied resources we have available today. Must have my magazines, books and the many quilt shop and quilt info available on the internet. My favorite magazine is American Patchwork and Quilting by BHG. Favorite designers are (but not limited to) Jo Morton and Edyta Sitar. I don t remember a family member quilting but I do recall a few quilts in the home growing up so possibly my grandmother did in her earlier years. She passed away when I was very young. I think growing up in the Amish area from PA may have influenced my love of quilting in some way. Currently I m working on a Jaybird Quilt pattern with a black background and brightly colored stars. 5

6 Congratulations to Sue Gulkis! After Linda Carr requested we draw another name because she was already a recent winner, Sue became the Golden Needle winner for September. Remember that the names of everyone who enters any Patchwords contest this year will be included in the October Grand Prize drawing for a QUILT LADDER!! Get your name in today, how many golden needles did you see this month? 6

7 ASK AUNT BEA Dear Aunt Bea, How do I know what kind of machine needle to use? Can't I just use the needle that came with my machine? Dear Needler, The needles that come with your machines are probably what are called universal needles. They are designed to sew almost anything, but because of that they would probably always be rated fair for whatever you are sewing on. If you choose needles that are designed for the particular fabric you are sewing they will be excellent to use. There are a few booklets out there by the different needle manufacturers that show how different kinds of needles look. The pointed part of the needle is shaped differently to go through the type of weave and density of the fabrics you might use. The best needles for piecing are sharps; they are designed to penetrate cotton fabric without cutting the fabric. Instead they penetrate between the weave. Some people like to sew soft knit fabrics and the needles used for that are a ball point because it has no sharp end. For machine quilting choose a quilting needle because they are heavier and made to go through all your layers including the batting. So since Aunt Bea uses tools that are as best as she can afford, she will change her needle to the task at hand. Don't forget with all this that a needle needs to be changed often-- usually recommended after 8 hours of continuous sewing. Aunt Bea is not such a good needler here as she often forgets to change the needle until it breaks. A good rule of thumb might be to change it after every major project, although that still might not be often enough. Go to the Klasse needle site on the web and click on the range. There you can choose a kind of needle and they will show you the shape of the needle and its use. It is a good pictorial aid. Aunt Bea 7

8 Comfort Quilts So good to be home. Thank you to all who helped with the comfort quilts while I was gone. I have received some quilts, blankets, bibs, PTSD mats, surgery pillows and the list goes on. I really appreciate the work that was done while I was gone. I also understand there is more to pick up at the shed which I will do promptly. I will update you as to where all the donations are going. I will also try to have some kits made up for the next meeting. Thank you to June Bauman for the information regarding our donations to the Catholic Charities Organization. It was very informative and very motivating. I will definitely get some quilts to them for the October 10 th baby shower for their layettes. If anyone has anything else to donate for this shower, please let me know and I can deliver it for you if you like. Thanks for all your help. It is so appreciated. 12 QUILTING RETREAT "Quilting with the Stars" retreat has come and gone with just a few little glitches. Jennifer and I (and my husband Bobby) went Thursday afternoon thinking we would carry in our items for the weekend retreat and be done. We got to the conference center to find they not only had not set up tables for us but there were no tables in the room. After a while tables were delivered and we set them up, moved chairs and a stage (that was a bit heavy) and got things set up waiting for the arrival of retreaters on Friday morning. Friday morning everyone got checked in and set up. Everyone got their picture taken like the star they are then got to quilting. We had machine quilters and hand quilters. Lunch was on your own so many people went to Salty Sues for lunch then they got back to quilting. There was a table set up with fabric that could be used for guild projects and several bibs, burp cloths and a quilt top were made. The last quilters were up after midnight working and visiting. Saturday quilting started by 7. A group of FSU students were having a retreat at the same time and we had several visitors throughout the day as they were interested in what it is we were doing there. A couple of young men Eric and John Robert even stayed for sewing lessons and each made a mug rug with the assistance of Carolyn and Sue G. It was nice when it was time to go home as these guys and a few others helped with loading cars. Cutting, sewing and quilting went on throughout the day and evening. Saturday evening we had a little program. We had a game getting to know our fellow quilting stars. Who knew the guild had members who deliver, dance on bars for money, have close encounters with celebrities and water buffalo. Helen J., aka Jennifer Garner, knew her celebrities and won a quilting with the stars book. We then played dirty celebrity (dirty Santa) for door prizes. Some door prizes changed hands a few times. Our challenge blocks were stars won by Helen J. Some special celebrity door prizes were awarded thanks to Sue G for her donation of those prizes. We had a few merchants that donated prizes so signed thank you notes for them. We were then back to more sewing. Sunday a little quilting got done but it was mostly clean up. All in all things went pretty smoothly and we heard mostly good comments. Be on the lookout in coming months for information about next year s retreat. If you'd like to help the chair people or have ideas please let Carolyn know. Thanks Ruth and Jennifer 12

13 Warrior Beach Retreat The Warrior Beach Retreat was this week and our guild handed out the quilts last Sunday, September 13th while we were cruising on the Betsy Ann Riverboat. It was great visiting with the Veterans and getting to know them. We had a few cancelations at the last moment, and we ended up delivering 19 quilts. We even have 15 quilts for the Spring 2016 retreat. Thank you to all who contributed a quilt for the retreat. You made it possible to thank the Veterans for their service. Sincerely, Linda Kelley Cindy Smith, 2 of the warriors, and Congresswoman Gwen Graham. 13
