1 OUR MONTHLY QUILT TALK Volume 33, No. 4 Saline County Quilters Guild Newsletter April 2016 Eddie Landreth, Editor Website: Webmaster: Eddie Landreth Dear Quilting Friends, President's Message We had six visitors this month! I love it when new people come see us and I love it even more when they join us. And I really love it when they consent to do a trunk show for us and share their work. That s very wishful thinking, folks. Hey, it s happened before! I have to tell you, I m not one of those trunk show kind o gals. I ve given away every quilt I ve ever made, except one wall hanging. Another thing that s no secret among our members who know me pretty well is that I m not that talented at quilt-making. But that s okay, I derive a lot of joy from it anyway! One of my favorite quotes is from Henry Van Dyke: Use what talent you possess. The woods would be very silent if no birds sang except those that sang best. I think it applies to quilting, too. Quiltmania is almost here! I m all set. Except I never finished my challenge quilt. I had a whole year to do it, and I didn t. Not much joy there. Mostly embarrassment and regret. ~sigh~ I m counting on Quiltmania to rekindle my quiltmaking spirit! Happy Quilting! 2 ~ Quilt Show News ~ The registration forms are now available online at Your quilt does not need to be completed at the time of registration but please have a pretty good idea that it will be finished in time for the show. Registration deadline is July 18. There is no limit to the number of quilts you may register, but they will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. At our guild meeting Monday night, we discussed the registration form. We also handed out printed copies of a good tutorial on hanging sleeves. If your quilt is longer than 90" we are requiring a secondary hanging sleeve as explained here: e.pdf Or you may "Google" directions. Hanging sleeves will need to be 4" in order to accommodate the pipes on which they will be hung and may be attached permanently or with safety pins. If using pins, be sure to use enough so that your quilt doesn't sag away from the pole. Members are invited to participate in our booth at the show. You may submit handmade items, gently used books or gadgets you no longer want, etc. You will be asked to pay 10% of your earnings to the guild and 9.5% to the state. Tiffanee and Missy have created a Facebook page dedicated to the quilt show. If you are on Facebook, please be sure to "like" and "share" us. The page is called "Saline County Quilt Show." There won't be a planning meeting in April, but please feel free to contact me with any questions regarding the show. I haven't confirmed a make-up month for Pattie yet, but hope she's back on the farm with us SOON. For April, Judy Huggins will help us with the Spring Star Block, a good choice since it seems that Spring is almost here! I'm thinking that we'll also discuss the Old Glory Block -- Shirley's looked so nice, so now I'm in the red, white and blue mood. Don't forget that June is the Guild's patriotic block auction; are ya'll thinking what I'm thinking? A suggestion - If you're looking for something to work on at QuiltMania, why not Farm Girl Blocks? I've found that if you cut them out ahead of time, clip or pin pieces by block, you'll be ready to start sewing quicker at Ferndale (don't forget your book). I'm looking forward to seeing your Canning Jars Block(s) next month! THANK YOU, Pat Wade, for all the information about Lori Holt's blog -- so many neat ideas can be found there! Ya'll feel free to share with us what you find on the blog. Myrna Yandell Announcing a new 5:30 Workshop beginning January 2016 Myrna Yandell will be facilitating our workshop and we will be using the book Farm Girl Vintage by Lori Holt of Bee in My Bonnet. More information about Lori Holt and her book can be found on her website: Facebook has a closed group for Bee in My Bonnet's Sew Alongs, you just have to request to join. There are lots of good ideas from members. There are several video's on as well. You will need to purchase the book for this workshop, be sure to bring it to the meeting. 5
