1 IIIII ' I Saline County Quilter's Guild Newsletter Volume 30 No. 01 January 2013 Beth Lane Editor WEB Site Kathryn Hodge BLOG Gwen Rogers President i-vr z-ivr Gwen Rogers Cathy Faulkner Gayle Lopez OFFICERS Secretary Treasurer Judy Huggins PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Dear Fellow Quilters, Wasn't that a great Christmas party? Did you think we might lose one of our members to the Little Rock Rockettes? It was wonderful to have this time oflaughter, delicious food and dancing. We missed those of you who couldn't make it. (Are you now wondering what transpired at the party???) In anticipation of the New Year have you got many resolutions? I'm thinking of the quilts I've started and want to finish. How many of you signed up for the Quilt Mania Quilt challenge? Remember the crayon color you chose last year? What? You forgot? The deadline will be here before you know it. How about the quilty-friends doll block exchange? Is that project completed? Okay, okay-just meddling now. So let me leave you with what I hope is an encouraging quote attributed to Matt Hunsberger: "It doesn't matter how slow you go as long as you don't quit." Stitch by stitch, we'll get our projects done! Despite the hustle and bustle of Christmas and the recent heartaches suffered by those in our guild and nation, my prayer is that the Prince of Peace will fill your hearts with hope and joy. Gwen SUNSHINE Contact Marilyn Payne at or her at mjp 126@att.net for her to send a card. THANK YOU Well, it's the next morning and I'm still grinning. I love the quilt top and I thank you from the bottom of MY heart for the beautiful heart quilt top. It's wonderful. I sat down last night and looked at each one. You'all did a great job of appliqueing the hearts. I want to thank you too for allowing me to be your leader for two years. It's been a pleasure to come each month. If you remember, it was totally hard to get up in front of you and make a sound. But with your encouragement, I got over my shyness and could even enjoy my time with the microphone. Thank you again for the hearts. I'll enjoy looking at them for many years to come. Jo IMPORTANT WEATHER POLICY If the weather is bad enough to close schools, we will not have guild meetings on those days. Please be safe!

PATCHWORK PIECINGS - WINDY WILT Hi, Hope you had a Merry Christmas and have power and heat!! The snow is just gorgeous but does come with its special problems. This morning it looked just like a picture post card with the sun glistening on the snow covered trees and landscape. First Wednesday was co-hosted by Jean Corley and Joann Thompson. Joann's home was decked out with Christmas decorations making her home so warm and inviting. Hot cider and Christmas cookies and candy helped put us in the Christmas Spirit prior to our bountiful potluck dishes. We really do have some outstanding cooks!! Rita suggested we really need a guild cookbook to preserve those great recipes. Hmmm...wouidn't it make a great fundraiser for the Guild? Our Guild Christmas Party was a fun, festive time and Jane Hammond did a superb job booking some surprise entertainment. It was a group of ladies all 60+ in age and a lot younger in stamina and heart that were called The Little Rock "Rockettes" and did a variety of dances some complete with high kicks! A surprise guest was our own Pat Wade participating in a lively "shake, shake, shake...shake your booty" dance!! LOLl Who knew she was the "Sultaness of Swing"! Wonder if we could get her to teach us that for a Saturday workshop??? With 2013 rapidly approaching it's time for New Years resolutions...i don't know about you but I don't have a very good track record in following through with them, but this year I'm going to resolve to be a better and more active member in our guild and want to encourage you to do so also. Attend more meetings, workshops, host a 1st Wednesday, no room at home...book the library and make it a sack lunch affair as Cathy Faulkner is doing in January, mentor someone, teach a program or workshop, and resolve to meet someone new at each meeting. December Birthday wishes to Jane Hammond, Paulette Hutchings, Beth Lane, Tami Oxenrider, Norma Welch and Troyetta Wright.

3 Wishing you all a Very Blessed New Year! See you on January 2, QUILTAHOLICS ANONYMOUS Meets at the Saline County Library on Monday, January in. The library opens at 9 AM. executive board meeting to begin at 1 PM. Gwen has called an SATURDAY WORKSHOP January 26th, 2013 workshop will be held at the Saline County Library from 9:30 AM. - 3:00 PM (weather permitting). Let's begin a new year by completing charity kids quilts partially made by members last year. Fay Poe will be demonstrating how to assemble kits with the use of quilt spray and a different way of sewing on a binding to complete the quilt. A variety of quilts need to be finished so please join your quilting friends and bring your sewing machines, scissors, pins, extension cords (if needed), a walking foot, light and dark thread and anything else you might need to complete the project. If unable to complete this at the library, feel free to take home and return to Fay or myself at the library on January 28th or February 4th at the library. Please contact me at , or me at quiltcici@att.netand let me know that you are coming to the workshop and we can prepare the kits to deliver on January 26th and as a last resort you can sign up at our regular meeting on January 21st. The fee for the class will be $5.00 I hope many of you will join us to work on the charity kids quilts. TREASURER'S Treasurer REPORT - NOVEMBER 1-30, 2012 submitted by Judy Huggins, Beginning Balance Nov 1, Disbursements Deposits Maggie Ball expenses Disbursements Beulah Wright refund 5.00 Ending Balance Nov 30, Donna Bunger refund 5.00 Deposits Jaynette Huff Door prizes Postage Donation for rent and janitor 2.00 Janitor Name tags and copies 4.55 Kid's Quilts Membership Dues Rent Total Deposits Checks re-order Total Disbursements MINUTES OF DECEMBER MEETING There was no business meeting held at our annual Christmas Party held on December 17, However there is a correction to the November minutes. Minutes say: "This has created a lot of dissension, We have started selling door prize tickets and charging for 3

4 5:30 workshop copies." Should read...,,"this has created a lot of dissension. We have lost 4 members that I know of since we started selling door prize tickets and charging for 5:30 workshop copies." Respectively submitted, Beth Lane acting Secretary PROGRAMS Don't forget that our very own Eddie Landreth will be presenting a trunk show at our January meeting! Melissa's schedule will allow it, she will be assisting him. And if MEMBERSIDP Please have membership forms and dues (if applicable) to Terri Dobbs by the January meeting. Our roster will be ready in Feb. and we'd like your name on it! 1ST WEDNESDAY Cathy Faulkner will be our hostess for our 1st Wednesday Potluck. Except it will be a brown bag and will be held at the Saline County Library on January 2,2013. The library is located off Smithers Drive in Benton. FUND RAISING DONATION QUILT We will have pictures and tickets for the 2013 Donation quilt ready at the January meeting. It will work a little different this year, you do not pay for the tickets when you get them. Just take 25 tickets then turn in the money when tickets are sold. Also, if you have ideas of places to sell tickets or if you would like to take the Quilt somewhere, just let me or Carol Smith know. Thanks for all your help. Pat Wade PROFESSIONAL WORKSHOPS We need more participation in the professional workshop that is scheduled during our retreat at Ferndale. Believe me, when compared with classes offered through other guilds, the price of these classes is cheap AT $35 for each of the two scheduled classes. Please show your support for the guild's endeavor to supply you with ongoing education. Your class fee is due at the January Guild meeting. Contact Carol Smith for more information: caro12tj@att.net Quiltmania Color Challenge 2013 Last April at Quiltmania we started a new challenge. To participate you paid $1.00 then drew a color crayon at random from a bag. The challenge is to use that color along with black fabric and white (or neutral) fabric to make a three color quilt. These fabrics can have no other colors in them but the three colors, but you can have different densities of the color you drew. To fmd these densities just color lightly and then again very dark on paper. If you can fmd it, your black fabric can have white in it and your color, but no other colors. Also your white fabric can have black and your color. Your colored fabric can have black and white but no other color. Get the idea - this is a three color quilt. The quilt can be any size, but must be quilted and bound. If you lost your color, just give me a call, I have the other piece of your crayon. Ifyou need help I will be at QA in the first Monday and will try to be at first Wed in January at the Library. Pat Wade Newsletter I must apologize for the late newsletter this month. While I did have power the entire time, I was keeping my sick grandson that week (his house had no power.) After he was able to go home, I was unable to produce the newsletter until I got some rest. I will do my utmost to have the future newsletters to your home by the first of each month. Please forgive any omissions or mistakes in this issue. Beth Lane, Newsletter Editor. 4
