1 OUR MONTHLY QUILT TALK Volume 33, No. 6 Saline County Quilters Guild Newsletter June 2016 Eddie Landreth, Editor Website: President's Message Dear Quilting Friends, First, thank you to Charlotte Williams for telling me I don t have to join my binding at an angle. And so many other things, too! If you missed her presentation at the May meeting, you don t know you can now bring your guilty secrets out of the closet. I don t remember exactly what she titled it, but her topic was on WHY you ve always heard those old rules, and if you know WHY they came to be, you may not need to abide by them. I really liked the one about not having to prewash fabrics if you buy quality fabric. Some manufacturers even specifically recommend that you NOT prewash. (How liberating!) It s the ones you inherit from Aunt Gertie and aren t sure of the quality you probably want to worry about. I don t prewash. There it is, I just don t. But I have to confess, I don t prewash because it s a pain. Fortunately, I buy pretty good stuff. We also had a great and well-received presentation by Toni Shockey about her association with the new women s work-release center in Pine Bluff. She s a chaplain. In case you haven t heard, our Guild voted to support a program she came up with whereby we ll donate materials and our time to teach these women how to quilt. The women can make quilts for their own families and/or for our charity quilt drive. I think this is such a worthy cause! As Toni said, allowing these women to give back to their families and to the community will do so much for their attitudes and selfworth. I look forward to this. Happy Quilting! 5 Pyramids / Curling Ribbon Border These two are made using the same unit... For any size Pyramid block, cut one square the size you want your finished block, plus 7/8" for seam allowances. Cut this square in half. You need one of the resulting half square triangles, per unit you will be making. Cut one square of your background color, and one of the smaller triangle color, the size of the finished block plus 1 1/4" for seam allowances. Stack and cut these twice on the diagonal. You will need one of each of these quarter square triangles per unit you will be making. Sew one of each of the QSTs right sides together, using a 1/4" seam. Press towards the darker fabric. Sew this pieced half square triangle to the one piece half square triangle...and one Pyramid unit is done...now make a million more. EXAMPLE: For a finished 4" wide Pyramid border...cut the half square triangle from a 4 7/8" square, and the two quarter square triangles from a 5 1/4" square of each. EXAMPLE: For a finished 3" wide Pyramid border...cut the half square triangle from a 3 7/8" square, and the two quarter square triangles from a 4 1/4" square of each. For the Curling Ribbon arrangement, you will make the same unit, but with the color orientation of the quarter square triangles reversed! Sew them end to end, turning every other one by one rotation to the right... Here's an idea for the corner of a curling ribbons border! 5

Those of you who missed May's Workshop and Meeting missed some awesome "show and tell" Farm Girl Blocks. Shirley Miller showed us her Cool Threads, and Old Glory Blocks, but she also had an assortment of animal blocks in the 6" size -- so cute! Linda Beavert demonstrated the Pie Cherries Block, and then she showed us her COMPLETED Farm Girl Vintage quilt top! I was so impressed that she has finished all these blocks since the first of the year! Way to go, Linda! Beulah Wright showed the blocks she has so precisely pieced in bright colors, proving she is also way ahead of me. Next month, Paulette Hutchings will share her Chicken Foot and Postage Stamp Blocks. It's not too late to join us; the blocks are a lot of fun to make and not too difficult. Any of these 12" blocks (made in patriotic colors) would be suitable for the upcoming block auction. Let's all get busy! Myrna Announcing a new 5:30 Workshop beginning January 2016 Myrna Yandell will be facilitating our workshop and we will be using the book Farm Girl Vintage by Lori Holt of Bee in My Bonnet. More information about Lori Holt and her book can be found on her website: Facebook has a closed group for Bee in My Bonnet's Sew Alongs, you just have to request to join. There are lots of good ideas from members. There are several video's on as well. You will need to purchase the book for this workshop, be sure to bring it to the meeting. 7
