Much to the dismay of many members, Dick Gray's demonstration last month was postponed due to the lengthy announcements and extra auctions which consumed the entire monthly meeting time. Dick has graciously agreed to return for the June meeting demonstration. Inspired by Frank Sudol in his October, 2000 demonstration at NCWT, Dick Gray began experimenting with hollowing, piercing, and coloring turned objects. Dick has made many award winning works of art over the past four years and will show us his technique for making these wonderful objects. 2 PRESIDENT S TURN by Rick Maier We will have the second LET program for Bowl Turning after the June meeting. Those scheduled are Sharon Wilhelm, Phyllis Hassler, Chuck Gies, Mark Waltz, Joe Maier, Tom Hogarth, Tom Wisnieski, Jun e Maier and Dennis Taylor. If you haven't paid your $5.00 yet, please pay the Treasurer. Thanks again for the Instructors who have done an outstanding job. We will go down to the tree farm in June. I now have Apple (sealed), Aromatic Cedar, (sealed), Walnut, (sealed), Hard Maple and Ash at my home. Let me know if you are interested. The money goes to the Club. We have applied for 2 AAW Grants. One is for the LET program and One is for Lou Quintana JR. to go to Arrowmount. The Korean War Veterans Association and the VFW called me to tell me they appreciated the statement about Memorial Day in the Newsletter. RUMBLINGS FROM THE WOOD CHIP PILE No comments were submitted in writing for this month s rumblings column; remember rustlings and grumblings don t count! Only comments submitted in writing and signed by a club member will be published. The goal of this column is to improve the quality of our club meetings and activities and only submissions intended for this purpose will be considered for publication. We reserve the right to edit the content and length of submissions. Where Is He Now? A message to Jim Pugh from former NCWT member Jim Duxbury For those of you who did not have the opportunity to know Jim Duxbury, he was a long time member of NCWT and a very uniquely talented individual. Jim was always thinking of new and creative ways of doing everything, especially as it might relate to woodturning. Check out Jim's website at and be sure to explore. Not having a chance to talk to Jim D. as much as he would have liked, Jim Pugh wrote to Jim Duxbury after his visit at the April meeting. Here is the response. Jim, Sorry I did not write back sooner. It was great to get your . It was good to see you and the whole club too. I do miss the friends and also think of the times we got to chat at lunch but I have to admit, that is about all I miss around there. Today was 88 but has been around Also even when the weather is cold the sun shines. March is great and the snow fall this year had to be under 4" at the most. I have finished off a small shop, 18 X 26. It was the former owners boat storage and nothing was done on the inside. Now it is wired for 220 volt, 70 amp. and is insulated and dry walled with a small wood stove and stereo--- Faaaantastic! Wish it was twice as big but you know how that goes. In March I got a Powermatic 3520 so the old Shopsmith is getting a rest. I still use it for other things and have home-made jigs and fixtures that are still needed at times. Never dreamed I would turn 100 pound blanks. It is not getting easier but sure is fun. The last turning competition I entered was in Raleigh last month at Klingspor's Woodworking Shop. I got 7 Blue Ribbons, 4 Red, and 2 White. In two categories I got all first, second, and third place. It was great. I should say this in Bold Print----That North Coast Woodturning Club did much of this for me. Every one of you helped me at one time or another and the level of expertise is second to none. I have probably attended 30 different clubs, in a dozen or so states, promoting the Resp-O-Rator and some have a few good turners and could be equal but most are not even close. I'll always be grateful. (No Tears) I have to ask you, In turning these hats they sometimes mist them with water. The fellow that taught me used a lot of it from time to time. He turned Ambrosia Maple and it worked fine. I did a cherry and a oak, used some misting and the things got all small black dots on them. Right into the wood. I used distilled water with a little Clorox and the same thing. Have you ever had that? Glad all is going well for you. Wish I would have had more time to talk. Hope Dot is doing good too. Say Hi. Proceeds from the auction were placed in the club treasury to help purchase further mini-lathes for our LET program and help fund professional demonstrations. Special thanks to retired auctioneer Tom Nero for his assistance as our head auctioneer. Larry McCardle has the info on reserving the lathes through AAW. Paul will talk to Larry. Follow up: The lathes were ordered by Paul Kosmos and should arrive at NCWT shortly. Lamoyne Porter presented a possible woodturning teaching opportunity at Cleveland State University with possible use of the facility for our club. Much investigation is needed prior to progressing with this opportunity. Joe Smith announced that professional turner Al Stirt will be our featured demonstrator in November. Al can be available for one or two extra days, Friday and possibly Thursday prior to the weekend demonstration, for hands on demonstrations. Please see Joe to express interest and sign up for these sessions. Auctioneer Tom Nero Joe Smith offered auction assistance. George Raeder investigated the opportunity to purchase a cocobolo billet for the club, but the seller was asking a high price for the item. We passed on the purchase. AAW is making JET mini variable speed lathes available at a discount. Brian Becker made a motion that the club purchase four lathes at a cost of up to $250 each and it was North Coast Woodturners June, 2005 Page 3 Jim Brindle reported that the Great Lakes Wood-Carvers show will be held September 24 and 25 this year. The club has purchased 15 tables. Some contracts have not yet been returned. Please get your contract in to Jim as soon as possible so we can be sure to schedule our tables properly. There is a new rule this year that limits a maximum of two people to share a table. The club decided (discussed, motion made and approved) that turner of the NCWT donation will receive $150. Donations for the raffles are needed. (Rick Maier volunteered five items.) George Raeder will find and coordinate judges for turning divisions. King Heiple will set up and coordinate the turning demonstrations
