1 MAY, 2005 NORTH COAST WOODTURNERS N E W S L E T T E R Carved Bowl by King Heiple May Meeting Demo: Pierced & Decorated Turnings Inspired by Frank Sudol s October, 2000, demonstration at NCWT, member Dick Gray began experimenting with hollowing, piercing, and coloring turned objects. Dick has made many award-winning works of art over the past four years and will show us his technique and share his tips for piercing and coloring hollowed turnings. AAW Roster 2005 The AAW roster has come out and several of us have noticed that there are some errors and old information in the addresses and s of members. Please review your roster and make certain your information is correct. If not, please send an e- mail to Brian Becker, bbec31@adelphia.net, with the correction. IN THIS ISSUE April L.E.T. 2 PRESIDENT S TURN by Rick Maier I would like to apologize in advance for missing the May meeting, but my granddaughter has her First Communion that day. Please note that the May L.E.T. program has been rescheduled to follow the June meeting. The participants are: Sharon Wilhelm, Phyllis Hassler, Chuck Gies, Mark Waltz, Joe Maier, Tom Hogarth and Tom Wisnieski. We will cover bowl turning for this group. Bring money to the meeting: two lathes will be auctioned as well as turnings from previous professional demonstrations. Several members and I will go down to the tree farm in May to get wood which will be sold at future meetings. Found some beautiful shag- bark Hickory trees and others. Thanks a million for the special help of the instructors at the L.E.T. Program. They were great and greatly appreciated. RUMBLINGS FROM THE WOOD CHIP PILE Editor s Note: This column is a new feature of the NCWT newsletter. Members are invited to submit their comments, questions, suggestions and/ or ideas for membership consideration via the newsletter. The goal of this column is to improve the quality of our club meetings and activities and only submissions intended for this purpose will be considered for publication. We reserve the right to edit the content and length of submissions and all rumblings must be signed and submitted by an active member of the club. Here s some food for thought generated from a recent impromptu brain-storming conversation with George Raeder. Would the Turn and Learn be improved if a) the item to be made was restricted to one or a small number of kinds of woods to help focus on the Turn and Learn features instead of on exotic woods sometimes used for Turn and Learn projects, and/or b) should being selected the club favorite Turn and Learn project remove the winner from future Turn and Learn competitions for the next 12 months? (Of course, all winners turnings would still be welcomed on the Show and Tell table.) Let s talk about it. Thanks! by Brian Becker HAPPY MOTHER S DAY MAY 8 Turners Turned Welldiggers! by Joe Quisenberry Joe Quis decided he needed a hot shower, so... son and fellow NCWT member, Jon, got to digging a well for Joe... along with several other North Coast Woodturners! 3 Rare Wood To Be Raffled This Month...CHESTNUT! by Jim Bohmer Back at the turn of the twentieth century, a distinctive grained-rather dense hardwood was used extensively for cabinetry, paneling, furniture and flooring. As has more recently happened to the American Elm, a blight has attacked the American Chestnut and virtually wiped it out before our oldest member was born. Most of us have seen some examples of Wormy Chestnut paneling and furniture, but I d wager that few, if any of us, have seen mature Chestnut trees or Chestnut lumber. Thanks to a probably once in a lifetime opportunity, and the efforts of Davey Tree, and Club members: Raeder, McCardel and Maier; various sized bowl blanks of Chestnut, will be raffled at this month s meeting, with the proceeds going to the NCWT Treasury. Most blanks have been cut to lathe readiness, and all are preserved with Anchorseal. The Chestnut tree find came from one of the last vacant lots in my neighborhood. I learned about the two mature Chestnut trees a couple of years ago, when Bill Roth, the Mayor of Fairlawn came door-to-door on a Saturday afternoon before the November election. Mayor Roth put himself through college doing tree work in Fairlawn, and has had a personal interest in these two trees for some time. The garage door was open when he visited, and of course a discussion of woodworking developed. He volunteered the location of the Chestnut trees. The next week I checked the Chestnuts out. There were distinctive seed burrs scattered over the ground, but the squirrels had gotten the nuts. NUTS! You know: Chestnuts roasting in the open fire, Jack Frost, etc. Early this year, a neighbor had volunteered the information that our Councilman, Jim Schwartz, had bought the lot to build on this year. One day, a couple of weeks ago, a couple of Davey Tree trucks showed up. I forthwith went over and talked with Davey, and called a guy named Raeder, who knew the Davey foreman... hence we have the wood! Bring some bucks to the meeting and get some very rare and distinctive wood to turn. Special Auctions At May Meeting Two of our older lathes will be auctioned at this meeting along with several articles turned at past NCWT meetings by professional demonstrators. These turned items are very special as they were left by the turners specifically to raise money for the club. Come prepared to buy! To be sold with accessories required for beginning turning. Spur center, tail center, etc. Powerful 1/2 HP, 1725 rpm motor.. Easy access to six speed controls (500, 800, 1250, 1800, 2650 & 3700) reduces down time. 4 April Demo: Brian Becker Thanks to member Brian Becker who demonstrated different ways he uses epoxy to enhance turnings, particularly platters. Thanks also for pictures by King Heiple and Karen Becker. Brian has experimented extensively with epoxies and other resins that might be used for inlay on turned items. Please visit the NCWT Tips Page for a copy of Brian's handout ( page1.html.) Brian showed NCWT members how he approaches turning a platter and preparing it for epoxy inlay. Brian used the club's Woodfast lathe. Following the handout, Brian worked through the steps in turning an epoxy inlaid platter. He mounted the blank for cutting a dovetail on the face. With the dovetail cut, he reversed the platter and turned the bottom. With the back finished, the platter is remounted and grooves cut in the face for the inlay. Brian talked about the resin pouring process and explained the importance of sealing the wood well when using colored resin to prevent streaking on the wood and about pouring in two layers to prevent flowers and leaves from floating. On a blank that had the epoxy already poured, Brian turned the face. North Coast Woodturners May, 2005 Page 4

5 There are several items that can be used for the inlay. Flowers, crushed stone, branch segments were shown. Note - On second picture, the bottom right two platters were turned by Ray Terhart after attending a miniworkshop at Brian s barn. 6 April Meeting Notes and News George Raeder has an opportunity to purchase a billet of cocobolo on behalf of the club. He was given authority to purchase the billet for the club. A motion was made, seconded, and approved to provide a Certificate of Appreciation to John R. Keim (DDS) for donation of wood to the club from his family s tree farm. The newsletter format on the club s web page ( has been changed to a format that is more suitable for printing. We realize that it is, at present, slow downloading, but we are working to speed it up. The cost to Less Experienced Turners (LET) participants will be $5 and you must bring your own tools. NCWT will be showing their works at the Norton Library for a month beginning June 1st. If you wish to display your turning(s), please get your article to Rick Maier before that date. Please be sure your article is well packed and clearly marked. It will be returned when the display is taken down. Note - The display may run longer than a month if the library gets very favorable feedback from patrons. Rick Maier has applications for the Utah Woodturning Symposium. See Rick if interested. Jim Brindle reported that the Great Lakes Wood-Carvers show will be held September 24 and 25 this year. The club has purchased 15 tables. A sign up sheet was provided for members to reserve a table. There is a new rule this year that limits a maximum of two people to share a table. The club decided (discussed, motion made and approved) that turner of the NCWT donation will receive $150. Donations for the raffles are needed. (Rick Maier volunteered five items.) George Raeder will find and coordinate judges for turning divisions. King Heiple will set up and coordinate the turning demonstrations. Ohio Valley Woodturners are accepting applications for their bi-annual symposium. This year's symposium will feature Richard Raffan, Chris Stott, John Jordan, J. Paul Fennel, Chris Ramsey, Ray Key, and Jimmy Clewes. The dates are October 21, 22, and See for more information and registration form. Recent word is that the housing is filling up fast and the symposium is reaching the registration limit. Jim Masters has recently undergone a serious surgery and is facing a lengthy recovery. He is getting better each day and the outlook is good, but he will not be turning for a while yet. His daughter Cindy sends her appreciation for the prayers, well wishes and cards Jim and the family has received. Please keep Jim in your thoughts and prayers and wish him a speedy recovery. King Heiple is also recovering from surgery and we send him our prayers and best wishes for a speedy recovery We are working on the resources page of our club Web site. Please take a look and let Brian Becker know if you have any information to offer. Please include addresses, links, brief descriptions, etc., as needed. For web links, descriptions are important. Please do not send url's or lists of links only. Include information such as: what the site is generally about, what attracted you to the site, why you think it is worthy of listing on our site, etc. Memorial Day is devoted to the brave men and women who have given their lives in defense of freedom while serving as members of America's armed forces. While we can never repay those heroes for their sacrifice, every American can take time to remember and honor them on this special day. 8 Visiting from North Carolina, former Chapter director Jim Duxbury brought several of his kaleidoscopes, his turned hats and this wonderful "transformer" bowl for our show and tell. The bowl is hinged so that it can fold on two different axes, creating three bowls from one turning. Amazing!! (But he doesn t miss the weather here. Go figure.)
