1 JANUARY, 2006 NORTH COAST WOODTURNERS N E W S L E T T E R Segmented Sphere By Jim Schuster George Raeder Auctioneer Tom Nero, assisted by King Heiple and Joe Smith ANNUAL DECEMBER AUCTION BEST EVER The January newsletter normally starts with auction news, but this year, Vice President Joe Smith asked for the floor for a moment before the auction. Joe, in a tribute to the large amount of time and effort given to North Coast Woodturners by Acting-President George Raeder, designed and crafted the fabulous plaque shown above. A retired architect, George expressed his admiration for both the art and the inscription Architecture is Inhabited Sculpture. Many thanks go to our special auction sponsors. Woodcraft of Bedford Heights, Rockler of Brookpark and Doll Lumber of Southington, OH, combined to donate enough great wood to satisfy the buying urge of an entire woodturning club. Please patronize these generous sponsors. They deserve our support. With additional donations from club members and guests, the club was able to raise a whopping $3,850. This is the highest auction revenue in club history. Special thanks to Don Karr for soliciting, storing and transporting many of the donations. His efforts alone accounted for $1300 of our proceeds. As usual, Tom Nero led an entertaining and prosperous auction, moving right along with the help of several members to get the auction completed. GEORGE RAEDER HEADLINES JANUARY MEETING Past President, recently past Acting President and outstanding woodturner, George Raeder, has amazed us many times with his intricate and creative turnings. This month, George will show us how to turn a simple (or maybe not so simple) scoop. A few years ago, George won our Turn and Learn with a turned and carved scoop. This month he will share a little of his magic. Don t miss it! 2006 Club Calendar...5 Bits and More Bits...4 Book Review...3 President s Turn...2 Rumblings...2 Tool Review...4 North Coast Woodturners January, 2006 Page 1
2 PRESIDENT S TURN By Paul Kosmos Happy New Year! The start of each new year is always exciting and filled with optimism. We look forward to a better year and hope to leave some problems behind. And then there are the New Year s Resolutions... the ones we all break the first week. The outlook for the Club in 2006 is equally exciting. We are coming off several very good years that have seen the club grow in membership, add to the treasury, and improve the turning skills of the members. Everyone deserves a well deserved pat on the back for those accomplishments. Our goal in 2006 is to build on that momentum, and we have a full agenda. You should see two professional turners. One will focus on technical aspects and one will focus on art and design. In addition, we will post a schedule of planned demonstrations by members or local turners. The schedule should be posted at our February meeting. The LET program, so successful in 2005, will continue in We are organizing the schedule and topics right now, and plan to post a full year schedule in February. Other items on the agenda include: A current review of our PA system. The old system has worked well lately, but many feel a better system will make the meetings more enjoyable. Announcement of this year s Life Member for service to the Club. Improving Learn & Turn, and encouraging more entries. The 2006 AAW Symposium is in Louisville this year! June (Thurs-Sat). I ll keep you posted as soon as details are available. Finally, a new member list will be printed and made available in March to all PAID members. Please note that you must have paid your 2006 dues to be included on the list and receive the club newsletter (82 members NOT paid) hint...hint. Happy turning in 2006! RUMBLINGS FROM THE WOOD CHIP PILE Only comments submitted in writing and signed by a club member will be published. The goal of this column is to improve the quality of our club meetings and activities and only submissions intended for this purpose will be considered for publication. We reserve the right to edit the content and length of submissions. What happened to the newsletter the past few months? Nothing. That is the absolute answer but the explanation is that the November and December newsletters were not created due to the Beckers having a computer meltdown at home shortly after they opened their new business in September. This problem was not resolved until November, with new hardware and new software to learn to use as the holidays approached. Hopefully, we will stay on track and on time in 2006, and will also have the missing issues posted shortly. Thanks for your patience! Karen Becker Have an idea, comment, suggestion? This is the place to get it discussed! Send or give all rumblings to Brian Becker, 4762 Black Rd., Richfield, OH, or bbec31@adelphia.net. TREASURER S REPORT The treasury balance was $4,200 at the start of the December meeting. LOOKING AHEAD... Jimmy Clewes of Hunwick Station, County Durham, England will visit NCWT in June, An excerpt from Jimmy s bio: Jimmy is not your ordinary woodturner. Upon a first meeting one would think of him as a renegade, a free thinker and not within the stereotypical image of a woodturner His charming British style, unending wit, creative mind and magnetic personality are only some of the attributes that make him popular in the woodturning demonstration circuit. Jimmy is on the Register of Professional Woodturners in the United Kingdom and has over 20 years of experience in woodturning and woodworking. The demand for his services as a freelance demonstrator takes him all across the United Kingdom, Europe and now the United States and Canada. Find more at North Coast Woodturners January, 2006 Page 2
3 Book Review By James N. Duxbury, Piedmont Triad Woodturners (former NCWT member) December 29, 2005 Learn to Turn is a perfect book for the new or novice turner. As the title denotes, this is truly A Beginner s Guide to Woodturning From Start to Finish. For most beginners, the first inspiration to turn can be mind-boggling experience and even intimidating. Barry Gross has done an excellent job to eliminate doubts and start new turners off in a safe, step-by-step direction. His presentation is concise, well illustrated and flows logically though each process for the beginner. Gross begins with a thorough overview on safety, an essential lesson for the new turner who may have little knowledge of eye protection, dust control, respirators, protective clothing, and even fatigue and electrical safety. There are clear definitions and explanations of all kinds of lathes, the related shop tools and basic shop layouts necessary for this craft. Much of the mystery of how to find or purchase wood, moisture content, grain layout, sealing and trimming is explained so that a bowl blank can be easily obtained. Sharp tools are a must and an entire chapter is dedicated to grinders, jigs, and tool grinding giving the beginner the necessary basics. As the beginning turner attains the ability to produce the first turning, he soon learns that besides tool handling, sanding and finishing are the keys to making pieces of quality. Detailed techniques and safety of sanding devices, sandpapers, finishes, applicators and polishes are well described. Almost any turner would benefit from parts of this chapter. Gross skillfully builds a sense of confidence. With gained experience in the use of tools, detailed instructions and photographs take the guesswork out of each cut, some of which can be scary for the true beginner. Specific projects include bowls, ornaments, boxes, and even hollow vessels, developed with step-by-step instructions allowing for a clear progression from start to a quality finished piece. Most avid turners build up huge collections turnings. The final chapter does a very good job of explaining different ways of marketing your pieces. I would highly recommend Learn to Turn for any beginner who wants a professional overview of the art of woodturning. With some creativity, practice, and the guidance of this excellent book, novice turners will successfully gain the proper techniques and safety necessary for years of enjoyable turning. It is published by Fox Chapel Publishing and can be purchased online at The cost is $14.95 WELCOME NEW MEMBERS Larry & Judy Wilson, Sheffield Village Cade Pierce, Aurora North Coast Woodturners January, 2006 Page 3
4 Tool Review By King Heiple Check out my 3/8 55 degree angle drill. It is a Chinese copy of the Sioux/ Milwaukee drill that costs about $150. Ideal for bowl sanding. It seems to be almost an exact duplicate and even has a better reversing switch. At $29.90 plus shipping, it costs even less than to repair a Sioux! I have been using one for a month and will try to remember to bring it to the meeting on Jan. 8 if you want to look at one. Available from Item # Reversible Angle Drill 55 degrees 3/8. Bits and More Bits Interesting Web site Forwarded by Jim Pugh contains an index of Ohio trees, providing a complete description of virtually any tree found in Ohio along with pictures of the tree, bark, leaves, buds, flowers, seeds, etc. Very comprehensive and totally interesting. Get Well Jim Masters is continuing his recovery at home. Visitors are still very welcome Dues We still have 82 members that have not paid their 2006 dues. Please help us by checking your records and making sure your dues are paid! Also, make certain your AAW dues are up to date. All members of NCWT must also be members of AAW. Any articles for our tips and techniques page are very welcome. The web page continues to have new additions. Please visit often.
