3 Sme things abut Nrwich Ntes fr the teacher: Read this infrmatin and yu can decide what yur class will be interested in. Use it t intrduce the city and set a cntext fr the bard game which will cme later. Use the maps and DVD t aid the intrductin r discussin Nrwich is a medieval city which was frmed ver 900 years ag. It is a small but lively city in the eastern regin f Britain. It is set in the cunty f Nrflk which has a beautiful castline and many lvely beaches. Nrflk is als famus fr the Nrflk Brads, a series f man-made lakes which are ideal fr hlidays and sailing. East Anglia, which is what the regin is called, has the lwest rainfall in the cuntry and ne f the highest sunshine rates. Nrwich itself is quite hilly but the cuntryside arund is flat, with huge skies, a bit like The Netherlands n the ther side f the Nrth Sea. In the Middle Ages, many Dutch expert weavers came t live in Nrwich and they were called The Strangers. They brught canaries with them t keep them cmpany when they had n friends t talk t. Nwadays the traditin lives n as the Nrwich City Ftball Team is nicknamed the Canaries (run by chef Delia Smith, it is smetimes in the premier divisin and smetimes nt!) In fact, althugh Lndn is nly just ver 100 miles away, Nrwich is nearer t Amsterdam (as the canary flies) and it takes just ver 30 minutes t get there in an aerplane. Nrwich was very famus fr weaving and clth in the Middle Ages and they used t have a special dye clur called Nrwich Red made frm the madder plant. Nrwich had many traders and merchants wh arrived by river frm Eurpe and Lndn. Later n it became mre famus fr ther industries such as she-making, mustard (made by the Clman family), brewing, printing and chclate. Nwadays mst f thse industries have died ut r mved (althugh Caley s still make chclate here) but they are remembered in the Bridewell and Strangers Hall museums. The mdern-day industries are insurance and financial cmpanies, shpping, turism, creative cmpanies and arts and culture. Nrwich itself is heart-shaped if yu lk at a plan f it and the shape is defined by its ld city wall which nwadays has a ring rad running arund it. Many f the streets in the city centre are the same as they were in medieval times thugh quite a few have been pedestrianised. In fact, Nrwich had the first UK pedestrianised street, Lndn Street, in the 1970s and the first Cuncil husing estate. It has a big Nrman castle n a hill and tw cathedrals, ne with the 2nd highest spire in England. Until abut 200 hundred years ag, Nrwich was England s 2nd mst imprtant city after Lndn. In the Industrial Revlutin, lts f ther cities like Liverpl, Newcastle, Bristl and Birmingham grew bigger but Nrwich still has its wn special and imprtant character. It is bth ld and mdern at the same time. Have a lk at the pictures f the Frum, the new library that was built in 2000, which is als the headquarters f the BBC and the turist infrmatin centre. The lcal stne is flint and cmes frm an area nearby called Grimes Graves. Many f the ld buildings are built frm flint. It is a very strng stne and desn t wear away r crumble s althugh the buildings are very ld, they are mstly still in use. The flint-knappers were very skilled and used t cut the flint int very neat blcks and they culd build with very tight jints because the blcks fitted s well tgether. There are many things t d in Nrwich and it used t be said that it had a pub fr every day f the year and a church fr every week. That is nt true any mre but many f the churches have been turned int buildings fr culture and fun, such as the Puppet Theatre and Inspire Science Centre, but it still has lts f pubs! The utdr market is very imprtant. It is right in the city centre and is busy every day f the week selling fruit and vegetables, lcal fish and crabs as well as many ther unusual bjects yu can buy. Or yu can sit and have chips and mushy peas and watch peple g by n Gentleman s Walk. It is recgnised by its clured rfs and peple have traded there fr ver 8 centuries. It was ften painted by the Nrwich Schl f Painters, artists such as Jhn Sell Ctman and Jhn Crme, famus fr waterclur landscapes. Nw a lt f trading is als dne in the Castle Mall, a shpping centre which is built underneath the Castle, (althugh it des have windws). It is a ppular place fr children in Nrwich t g at weekends as it has a cinema as well as many shps and it is indrs. It has a small sculpture park called Castle Green n tp. The accent in Nrwich is quite slw and sft and there are a few ld wrds that peple still use. Listen t sme f the stries and wrds n the DVD. 2

4 Where is Nrwich? 253 miles/407km 180 miles/290km 263 miles/400km Nrwich is a small city in the east f England in the cunty f Nrflk. It is abut 100 miles frm Lndn, the capital f England. This map shws rughly hw far it is frm yur city. The climate is sunny and dry as it has the lwest rainfall in the cuntry. The cast f Eurpe is less than 80 miles away by ferry acrss the Nrth Sea and Nrflk has many nice beaches 3

5 What shape is Nrwich? Nrwich is a medieval city, ver 900 years ld and is heart-shaped, shwn by the ring-rad which is built n the site f the ld city wall. Sme parts f the wall are still there. The river Wensum runs arund ne side. Outside Nrwich it jins the river Yare which ges int the Nrth Sea at Great Yarmuth abut 20 miles away. The next nearest large twns are Ipswich (40 miles away), Cambridge (60 miles away) and King s Lynn (45 miles away). 4

There are 5 teams r Guilds each with 6 r 7 members. The game is ideal fr 30 r 36 children. 7 Lessn plan The map Take ut the map and pin r stick it up n the wall. Talk abut where Nrwich is in relatin t the classes' wn city, the UK and Eurpe and what kind f place it is eg, its climate, industry and surrunding area (see ntes). This will help t lcate Nrwich and prvide a cntext fr the rest f the cntents f the bx. Ntes fr the teacher are included with this plan n pages 2, 3 & 4. Pick ut infrmatin apprpriate fr yur class. Mre inf if required n Time apprx 5 minutes with whle class tgether. The DVD Teacher t put the DVD int a DVD player. It will run autmatically thrugh a visual tur f the city guided by a puppet (because Nrwich has ne f nly tw puppet theatres in the cuntry) t give a sense f the city's envirnment, sme sunds, stries and messages frm lder peple and children and it will include sme f the special wrds that are used in this area. Again this will help with the cntext-setting f present day Nrwich. The audi-visual lasts apprx 6 minutes with whle class wrking tgether. The Nrwich Friend Ship Bard Game The bard game will take a class led by their teacher, apprx ne hur and fifteen minutes t play, including feedback in the frm f a quiz. The game is structured in rder t: Increase knwledge f a gegraphic area Imprve cmmunicatin and language skills thrugh speaking, listening, and discussing. Encurage cllabratin; prmting friendship, citizenship, and peer respect. Imprve maths skills thrugh awareness f shape, space, measuring and patterns. Include a variety f experiential mini-lessns The game begins after the game has been laid ut n a table at least 1200mm x 1200mm in the centre f the classrm, (there are setting up instructins in the game bx) and the children are seated in five grups each at their wn table arund the rm. Fr the duratin f the game the teacher is the Head f the Guilds! 1. Teacher intrduces the game referring t the Nrwich DVD and explaining that the game will teach them mre abut the histry and current day life f Nrwich 2. Teacher explains the bard game in brief 3. Teacher as 'Head f the Guilds' gives each grup a guild title and clur and explains the functin f each f the Guilds as ld Nrwich trades (inf in Head f Guilds wallet); Weavers(dark red) Merchants (green) Flint Knappers (grey) Mustard Millers(dark yellw) Shemakers (brwn) 6

8 and gives each Guild their wallet with a badge fr each child and rute plan. Each wallet cntains: 7 Badges (each numbered 1 t 5, a Guildmaster and a 'Scribe' 1 Rute Plan Each grup will als need a pencil fr each child, felt pens and sheets f A4 paper 4. Teacher asks children t put n a badge each. They may need help with this. The Scribe needs t be a child wh enjys writing. The Guildmaster will nt cllect a task but will be the spkespersn fr the team. Fr teams f 6, the Guildmaster can be a numbered child, fr even smaller classes, s can the Scribe. 5. Children with badge number 1 are asked by the Head f the Guilds t cme and cllect their Team Tken and infrmatin abut their Guild 6. Child 1 returns t their team table and reads their Guild's infrmatin t their team. (KS1 will need help). They will have 5 minutes t read and understand the nature f their Guild. The Scribe can make ntes. The Guildmaster can ask fr help. 7. Children with badge n. 2 are asked t bring their team s Rute Plan and Team Tken ut t the bard game. 8. Children with badge n. 2 use their Rute Plan t lcate the team's first destinatin. They bring their first destinatin task(remvable frm the bard) back t their grup, leaving their Team Tken behind in its place. 9. Each grup undertakes each task as a team. The Head f the Guilds times each activity fr apprx 10 minutes. At the end f each task, all items must be returned t their bags and replaced n the bard and the Team Tken retrieved. This prcess is repeated by children 3, 4 and 5 systematically by cnsecutive number, until each child has been ut t the bard nce. There are fur activities per team, each lasting abut 10 minutes. During this time, the Scribe needs t make ntes t help the team in the quiz and the Guildmaster can ask the Head f the Guilds questins r fr help. 10. The Quiz A fun ending t the game which gives the children the chance t shw what they have learnt. The quiz enables each Guild t hear a little f the jurneys and experiences f the thers. The quiz cnsists f 20 'hands up' questins relating t the bard game experiences f particular Guilds. There are 4 questins fr each Guild. The Head f the Guilds keeps scre n the whitebard. Finally there are 5 'general Nrwich' questins as pssible tie-breakers! NB The difference between Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 lessn plans is in the differentiated activities and quiz questins which will be clearly labelled KS1 and KS2 in the activity/task bags. It wuld really help t have at least ne adult helper with each team, especially key stage 1. Ideally, ne adult wuld set the game up whilst the teacher ges thrugh the intrductin and DVD, althugh children can help with laying ut if this isn t pssible. 7
