Scrapper s Guide Digital Scrapper May 2010 Take me to the Premier members area

Welcome to the May 2010 Digital Scrapper Premier! Are you ready to go on another scrapbooking journey this month? Every time you watch an instructor demonstrate how to do something new, or maybe just how THEY do something a little differently than you do it, your mind is expanded, and you re never quite the same as you were before. Think of it as forging new paths in your brain! Learning new things is, to your brain, like working out is to your muscles. You begin to feel better about your abilities, you have more confidence, you re willing to try new things. In fact, you get new ideas of how to apply the principles in other areas of scrapbooking. For example, I teach a lesson this month on how to create a grungy, personalized license plate. You may think, I m not sure when I would ever need a license plate! But look at it this way: You can apply the same grunge principles to other projects, or, if you re designing elements, you can make those elements have a similar worn look! I ve personally made a goal to expand my knowledge of scrapbooking and designing every day. It s one of my 5 core daily goals that I stick to at least 5 days a week. My minimum amount of time toward learning something new is 15 minutes, and I find that I look forward to that time more than just about anything else I do all day. I often go beyond 15 minutes, but it s more important for me to be consistent and spend 15 minutes learning than to not do it at all. This month in Premier you ll get a chance to exercise your brain and scrapbooking skills as well. Kayla will show you how to fix a photo with two different adjustment areas something that happens frequently with photos and Jenny will show you a powerful, yet simple, design principle that may just revolutionize your pages! My two tutorials focus on using filters to create texture on elements I think you ll have fun with them! May you journey to many new scrapbooking horizons this month! Love and Scrapbooking Success, Linda Sattgast

Top Picks - April 2010 Sugar and Spice Kit by Digital Scrapper Designs An Easter Egg hunt is the perfect activity to scrap using April s Sugar and Spice Kit, and shirleyc did just that in our Top Pick this month. Not only did she use some of the beautiful pastel papers as the background for this layout, but she did a wonderful job of photo-journaling the event as taught in last month s tutorial by Susie Roberts. I loved the sweet expression shirleyc captured on this little boy s face -- her arrangement of photos does a great job of showcasing the fun he had dyeing Easter eggs. Great job, shirleyc. Thanks to you and our other talented scrappers for sharing your fun layouts. Top Pick Page by shirleyc I love the photo journaling idea from the video this month! It was fun to try, and I will repeat it. barb_b connieg Congratulations to the other top picks, pictured here in alphabetical order. Click on each of the thumbnails to see the gallery pages for these other great layouts. marylc shirleyc

Video Lesson 1 Video Lesson 2 Creative Exposure Wrapped in Twine by Kayla Lamoreaux by Linda Sattgast Getting the exposure right in all areas of a photo can sometimes be complicated. In this tutorial you will learn how to use a gradient technique to adjust exposure in different areas of a photo, properly exposing both a colorful sky and a foreground subject. Wrapping twine around a photo or frame is easy and fun! You ll receive two twine brushes with this tutorial, and you ll learn how to combine them to create the look of realistic twine. 12 Video Lesson 3 Old License Plate Video Lesson 4 Pleasing Proximity by Linda Sattgast Create an old, grungy license plate! Personalize it with your own journaling words for a uniquely you element. You ll learn to use a filter you may never have used before to create the cracked look of paint on the license plate, and then you ll finish it up with some strategically placed rust. Photos: Linda Sattgast Page: Jen White Papers and Elements: Boys And Toys kit Font: Mom s Typewriter by Jenny Binder Explore a design principle called proximity that is often ignored by scrapbookers, resulting in underwhelming pages. You ll see the principle aptly demonstrated, including before and after pages. Just this one principle could transform your scrapbooking! 13 Snapshot Album by Linda Sattgast When I thought about who would be a good candidate for a book showcasing fathers and boys, I immediately thought of Simona and Jamey. They have three of the cutest little boys you ever did see, and Jamey is a devoted father. When I asked if they would work with me on a photo book project, they agreed to let me come over to their home and photograph them. As the photographer, I needed a plan a way to approach this scrapbook album. Every cohesive album needs a plan. If you don t plan, you ll get an album full of separate pages that may or may not connect. My plan for the Blessed With Boys album was pretty loose, but it still gave me a way to approach my photography and the book itself. I used what I like to call the Snapshot approach. This is where you ask yourself: How would I describe this family (or this school, or this vacation, or this house...) right now? What could I tell in pictures and words that would give people a snapshot of this family at this moment in time? I wrote down a few ideas that I thought would be good to photograph: the boys room, bicycling, playing T-ball, interacting with Dad, etc. When I got to Simona s house, I asked her, What is typical about your boys right now? and she gave me some more ideas. The boys ages ranged from almost 2 to 6, so my first job was to win their trust. They were somewhat familiar with me, since I had been their teacher in Sunday School, but now I was in their home environment. They would not have cooperated as well if I had just shown up and started snapping pictures. (continued)

To help them understand what I was doing I asked, Do you like to read picture books? The answer, of course, was yes, so I asked, Is it OK if I take your picture so we can make a picture book about you? Jen White designed the album, and it was her idea to ask Simona to write a letter to her boys. It turned out to be a heartfelt addition to the book. Now the book is finished, and I can t wait to show it to them! It s being printed at Shutterfly right now, and should arrive at my door in a few days. Through the years, as the family looks at this album, it will be a snapshot of their life at this moment in time. What a precious gift to give yourself or someone else! That was something they could relate to, and they readily agreed. It would have been even better if I had shown them a prior book I had done of a family with kids, but I didn t think of that at the time. I also decided to use one of my favorite tricks to get children to cooperate with a photo shoot. If a child is being shy, I take a picture of a toy of theirs, or of someone else, and then say, Look at this picture of mommy! I show them the LCD screen of my camera so they can see the photo. Then I say, Would you like to see a picture of you in my camera? I ve never had a child refuse. In fact, they will often pose for me or suggest possible poses. Sometimes I have a hard time getting them to stop! Once we got going, I spent a couple hours with the boys and their dad, taking pictures. To help the mom with journaling, I divided the photos into folders according to subject matter and asked Simona to simply comment on each subject or featured child.

Extra Tidbits Fiber Filter Fun Some filters stay quietly hidden in the Filter menu, and you never realize how useful they are until one day you run across them and try them out. That s how the Fiber filter was for me. I ve only recently paid any attention to it. In my video lesson called Tied With Twine, I teach you one way to use the Fiber filter, but another fun way to use it is to thread buttons! Here s how: color chips Step 1: Open the button you want to thread. Create a new layer above the button layer. Get the Elliptical Marquee tool and click and drag an oval outline a little bit longer than the distance between the holes and as wide as you want your thread to be. Step 2: Choose a coordinating Foreground and Background color for the Color Chips. This will be the dark and light colors of your thread. Fill your selection outline with the Foreground color by presing Alt Backspace (Mac: Opt Delete). Don t deselect yet. Step 3: Choose Filter > Render > Fibers. Adjust the sliders until you get the look of thread you want. Click OK and deselect (Ctrl/Cmd D). Step 4: Press Ctrl T (Mac: Cmd T) to get a Transform outline. Rotate and position the thread as desired. Click on the checkmark to confirm the change. Step 5: Ctrl click (Mac: Cmd click on the thumbnail of the button layer in the Layers panel to get a selection outline the shape of your button. Get the Eraser tool and erase away the two ends of the thread that extend beyond the holes. Deselect. Step 6: Use the Burn tool to darken the ends of the thread, and add a drop shadow.
