YOU RE BUSTED! For this project you are going to make a statue of your bust. First you will need to have a classmate take your picture, or use the built in computer camera. The statue you re going to make is going to include your neck and part of your chest area, so make sure the picture leaves enough room around your head, neck, and chest for you to make necessary adjustments later on. Once you ve imported the picture into your folder, open it in Photoshop. Select the crop tool and choose the settings shown here. Drag the crop tool around your head, neck, and chest areas leaving a fair amount of room around them all. When cropped, your picture should resemble the one of me shown here to the right. In the Layers palette, duplicate the background layer, by dragging and dropping it on the New Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers palette (or pressing command J). Double-click the name on the Background Copy layer and rename it Bust. Deselect the eye icon to the left of the Background layer, so when you delete the background from the bust layer, the Background layer won t show up. Your Layers palette should now look like the example shown to the left. By now you should have learned various methods of deleting backgrounds from subjects, use a method that you feel comfortable with. Different methods work better for different situations. Some people just like using the eraser tool, I like selecting the subject with the magnetic lasso, making adjustments in quick-mask mode, selecting inverse, and then deleting the background. Whatever method you choose, making good selections is key to having a quality looking project. Take your time and do a good job of deleting the background. Your project should now be similar to the picture shown here to the right. Usually I use the Refine Edge option when extracting hair from the background (like we used in the Elvenhead project), but since statues don t have any fly away hairs (which the Refine Edge option is good for) just use a standard selection tool/method. The next step is to make your picture look like the bust of a statue. Look at this example of a bust statue of Abraham Lincoln. Notice how the chest area is cut and shaped, and how it is attached to a base. Bust statues vary on how the chest area is cut and shaped, and gets attached to a base, but this is a pretty good example. I m going to use a more traditional, smoother shape to cut the chest area in my picture. This could take some experimentation, and you may erase parts of the image that you wish you hadn t, so let s use that neat little trick we call a Layer Mask. In case you haven t used a layer mask before, or you forget how it works, it s much like an invisible cream would work if such a thing existed. Rub on the invisible cream and you disappear, wipe off the invisible cream and you re-appear. To do this, make sure the bust layer is selected, then choose Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal All. Your Layers palette should now look like the one on the next page.

When using a layer mask, you make things disappear by painting with black, and re-appear by painting with white, so make sure your background and foreground colors are set to default. Select a hard edge brush, I chose size 20. Begin painting and notice how things disappear, switch to white, and notice how they reappear. Also notice how the box to the right of your picture in the Layers palette changes as you paint (see the example below). This shows the areas you have painted black in (the areas that are invisible). Once you think you ve got a good bust selection, have your teacher look at it. Here s what mine looks like (shown right). Once your teacher OK s your layer mask bust selection, apply the layer mask by choosing Layer > Layer Mask > Apply. Notice how the layer mask box in the Bust layer is now gone. Well I don t quite look like stone yet. Most stone statues may be lifelike in shape, but are usually one main solid grayish color. To remove the color from your image, but maintain dark and light tonal value, select Image > Adjust > Desaturate. Unless you got really lucky, some parts of your image such as clothes or hair are darker or lighter in value than your skin color. Notice how my shirt is slightly darker, and my hair is much darker. You re going to need to select each area that is a different value than the skin, and lighten or darken it to match. Before you make these adjustments make a duplicate of the Bust layer (command J). You ll make adjustments to the Bust copy layer. Making a backup layer is a good idea in case you make major errors that would be difficult to repair. Should this happen, simply trash the copied layer, duplicate it again and retry darkening and/or lightening the needed areas until you get it right. You can adjust the brightness of the above-mentioned areas by using the Brightness/Contrast filter, but I ve found this won t get you the best results. A better way is to adjust the levels. After making a careful selection of an area that needs adjusting, choose Image > Adjust > Levels. Experiment by dragging the three triangular sliders below the histogram (the black mountain looking shape) back and forth until you get the needed area/s to best match the value of the skin, and look the most natural. You ll need to do this to each area that needs adjusting individually. Here s mine after adjusting the levels on both the shirt and the hair. Don t worry about the eyes - we ll use a different method for them.

Next we re going to work on the eyes. Create a new layer and title it eyes. Since a stone statue s eyes aren t colored, paint in the eyes with a medium gray that best matches your skin color. Next add shadow around the perimeter of the eyes with the burn tool, and add highlights to the center of the eyes with the dodge tool. Try to make them look as natural as possible. Another little extra touch we need to add is an edge to the chest area that we cut off earlier. Of course you could just paint this on, but I believe this method to be better. Duplicate the bust layer again, and rename it edge. This edge layer should be between the two bust layers. Select the move tool, then press shift and tap the down arrow key four times. Notice how this creates an edge at the bottom of the bust. You can adjust your edge up or down left or right as needed. Holding down the shift key while pressing an arrow key moves a selected area or layer ten pixels at a time. Not selecting the shift key will move the selected area or layer one pixel at a time. You may now have some undesired areas or parts showing on this layer. Simply erase the areas of the edge layer that you don t want showing (but leave the edge area you created at the bottom of your bust). You may also have some gaps that need to be filled in on the ends. If so, select a gray that matches and fill in these holes. I also added some burn to the edge layer in certain areas, and lightened the bottom edge of the Bust layer copy with the dodge tool. This light and shadow helps to give a more realistic effect. Your project and Layers palette should now look like this.

Well this is looking pretty good, but we still need to give the statue a stone looking texture. For this, you ll need to combine the edge, eyes, and Bust copy layer onto one layer. Of course you could just merge the layers, but I want you to leave all these layers in tact so that I can see if you followed directions like you re supposed to. Besides, the method you ll use is good to learn since you may need it for future projects. Select the top layer, which should be the eyes layer. Choose Select > Select All. Then choose Edit > Copy Merged. Deselect, then choose Edit > Paste. Notice how a separate layer that combines the exposed layers has been created. Rename this layer merged bust, and hide all the other layers. Next you ll create the stone effect. For this, you will need a new layer. Click the new layer icon at the bottom of the Layers palette, and name it texture. Your Layers palette should now look like this palette shown right. To create the statue texture effect, select the default colors (black foreground, white background). Then select Filter > Render > Clouds. Then choose Filter > Render > Difference Clouds. Then choose Image > Adjust > Levels and drag the white arrow to the far left to bring out the veins. Look familiar? It should, you did this before in the Bloodshot Eye project. Well we don t want this much of a contrast between the black and the white so select Image > Adjust > Brightness Contrast. Set the Brightness slider to 50, and the Contrast slider to 38. To help give a stone speckle effect we ll add some noise. Choose Filter > Noise > Add Noise and select the settings shown here (top left). Next choose Filter > Artistic > Plastic Wrap and select the settings shown bottom left. Your texture pattern may be slightly different, but should now resemble the sample shown here to the right.

In the Layers palette, change the blending mode of the texture layer to multiply. This blending mode makes the light areas of the layer transparent, while maintaining the darker areas of the layer. You ll notice the stone texture covers the whole layer as shown in the first picture to the right. Well, we want the stone to cover the statue area, but not the background. To do this, select Layer > Create Clipping Mask. Your picture should now resemble the second picture to the right. Now that s a stone statue! Well keep in mind this project was to introduce you to, if not teach you, some advanced layer techniques in Photoshop, so we ll finish this project off by showing you one more advanced layer technique. My statue needed a little more contrast. Of course, I could merely adjust the levels, or the brightness/contrast on the merged bust layer, but that wouldn t make you as advanced a Photoshop user as the step you re going to use will. Besides the step I m going to show you has advantages that you should know about. What I m talking about is called an adjustment layer. The advantage to using an adjustment layer is that it changes the look of the layers beneath it without making permanent changes to those layers. It s kind of like putting sunglasses on they can change the way things look to you without actually changing the objects you re looking at. So let s get to it and add us one of those adjustment layers. You could add a levels adjustment layer, but I used a brightness/ contrast adjustment layer. Make sure the texture layer is selected. Click on the adjustment layer icon at the bottom of the layers palette, and scroll to either Levels, or Brightness/Contrast. Make adjustments that make your project look the best to you. The great thing about an adjustment layer is that you change the way your project looks without actually changing any of the layers. Click the eye icon next to the adjustment layer to hide it, then reselect it to show it again. Double-click the adjustment layer to re-open it so Adjustment Layer Icon you can change your original settings. You can experiment with other adjustment layers to learn about them, but if you create more than a Levels or Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer delete them when you are done. Your final layers palette needs to look like the one shown here for you to get a good grade so make sure it matches. If it doesn t, you didn t follow directions somewhere, or did something wrong. Congratulations, you re done. You re completed project should look like the example on the following page. Your next project will be to create a base for your bust that includes your name on it, and to add a background.
