2 Some Tutorials To Inspire You Welcome to the March 2011 Digital Scrapper Premier! Are you excited to start a brand new month? March is special to me because Charlie and I were married in March, but there are other great things to observe this month: March 2 is Read Across America Day as well as Dr. Suess s birthday. March 8 is Mardi Gras and March 9 is Ash Wednesday. Daylight Saving time begins the 13th and St. Patrick s Day is the 17th. March 20 is the first day of Spring (at least in the northern hemisphere) and it s also the Jewish Purim holiday from the time of Esther, the queen. (Fun!) But get this all of March is National Craft Month and Women s History Month! Just think we celebrate both these holidays all year long with our scrapbooking. We re writing the history of our lives through our crafting of scrapbooks. (Guys, you re welcome to join the fun!) Someday, in some future time (and galaxy?) historians may use YOUR scrapbook to show what life was like in the early twentyfirst century. So straighten your shoulders, hold your head high, and go forth with pride to conquer your next scrapbook page. Women unite! We can do it! I m so excited about the beautiful Timothy Lake album made by Jen White with this month s fun kit, Back To Nature, by Eva Kipler. Jen made the album with photos from my family s canoe trips to Timothy Lake on Mt Hood in Oregon. How thrilling to have someone so talented make a scrapbook of my favorite memories! Since I ve taken so many reflection photos at Timothy Lake, I thought I would teach a couple techniques that involve reflections one for a single photo and one for a curved photo grid that will give your pages a wow! factor. Jan Walker will teach you how to transform a photo into a gorgeous vintagestyle print. Jen White finishes up with a tutorial that will woo you outside the box of your regular scrapbook pages with a bold, but eye-pleasing look! 5 Getting to know... Eva Kipler Hi! My name is Eva Kipler. I live in Virginia Beach, Virginia, with my husband and three wonderful children, ages 18, 15, and 11, who inspire me and provide me with a seemingly endless amount of creativity and ideas. My husband, who is a U.S. Naval officer, is often deployed overseas, so the vast majority of my time is spent with my children and our rambunctious three-year-old goldendoodle dog, Lola. I love to make a bold statement with my designs, and it usually comes through in my color choices. My design style is considered to be traditional, as it resembles products you can purchase in paper scrapbooking. I grew up in Santa Fe, and while a student at New Mexico State University, I joined the United States Navy on a whim for a five year enlistment. I wanted to see the world and I certainly did! For over 2 years I was stationed in Wales and then in Scotland for a year. During those years abroad, I traveled at every opportunity I had. Oktoberfest in Germany was one of my favorites! My last duty station was Virginia Beach, Virginia, where I met and married the man of my dreams. In 1993 my enlistment was fulfilled, and instead of re-enlisting, I decided to return to college to finish my degree. In 1998 I completed my bachelor s degree in accounting and graduated Magna Cum Laude. I have been a stay-at-home mom since our last child was born. In my free time I spend quite a bit of time on the computer and on the internet. The discovery of digital scrapbooking was certainly a turning point for me. I am now able to contribute financially to our household while working at home! Being a digital designer is definitely a true fit for me. I have an outlet for my artistic creativity and am here when my children need me. With my husband often deployed, working out of the house makes things so much easier, and the best thing is that I love my work! 13 Extra Tidbit Reflected Title by Linda Sattgast When you have water photos, it can be fun to create a title with a water reflection. Here s how to do it. Type a word or phrase for a title. Use all capital letters so you don t have letters that go below the baseline. Add a stroke outline, if you wish. For my title I added a 3 px black stroke on the outside of the letters. Position the title so it s over some water on your photo. If you didn t add a stroke outline, right click on the title layer and choose Simplify in Elements or Rasterize in Photoshop. If you added a stroke outline, click on the Create a new layer icon on the Layers panel. Shift click on the type layer to select it also, and press Ctrl E (Mac: Cmd E) to merge the layers. Press Ctrl J (Mac: Cmd J) to duplicate the type layer. In Elements: Choose Image > Rotate > Flip Layer Vertical. In Photoshop: Choose Edit > Transform > Flip Vertical. Get the Move tool and drag the flipped title down until it looks like a reflection.

Choose Filter > Distort > Wave and enter these settings: Number of Generators: 5 Wavelength: 45 Min./48 Max. Amplitude: 5 Min./10 Max. Scale: 20% Horiz./16% Vert.

(Click once on the dialog box to exit the field.) Choose Sine for the Type and Repeat Edge Pixels for Undefined Areas. Click OK. If the effect isn t strong enough, press Ctrl A (Mac: Cmd A) to run the filter again. Click on the Add Layer Mask icon to get a layer mask on the reflection layer. Get the Gradient tool. In the Options Bar, click on Linear gradient and choose 100% Opacity. Open the Gradient Picker and double click on the first gradient, Foreground to Background. Make sure the Foreground Color Chip is white. Click and drag from the top of the reflected title to slightly past the bottom of the title. Reduce the Opacity of this layer at the top of the Layers panel. Note: If you don t have a layer mask in your version of Photoshop Elements, either create your own mask using the Layer Mask Workaround video and instructions found in the Extras Folders in either the Reflected Photo lesson or the Curved Photo Grid lesson, or use the Eraser toolset at 30% Opacity to gradually erase the lower part of the reflection.
