1 Movie Poster Open the Poster Background.psd file. Open the Cloud.jpg file. Movie Merchandising Choose Image>Adjustments>Desaturate to make it a grayscale image. Select the Move tool in the Toolbar and drag the cloud image up to the tab of the Poster Background file. Wait for the file to switch to that image, then drag down onto the image to place the cloud image above the background. Move the image until the left edge is against the left side of the background and the clouds are above the water. Choose File >Save As and name the file Move Poster.psd. Double-click the text of the layer and name the layer Clouds. Change the Blending Mode of this layer to Overlay. To make the sky and water to blend in, add a Layer Mask to the Clouds layer by clicking the Layer Mask button at the bottom of the layers panel. Select the Brush tool and choose a 125px, soft, round brush, then set the brush opacity to 20%. Make sure the foreground color is set as black and the layer mask is selected. Brush around the parts that you want to hide. Start with the edges of the cloud image first to soften them and get the image to blend. Keep brushing until you get something similar to the image on the right. If you feel you ve masked too much of the image, just change the foreground color to white. Paint on the parts of the image where visibility should be restored. Using an opacity of black or white while painting on a layer mask will cause the image to be more semitransparent than either visible or not. Open the plane.jpg file. Select the Move tool in the Toolbar and drag the cloud image up to the tab of the Poster Background file. Wait for the file to switch to that image, then drag down onto the image to place the plane image above the cloud layer. Choose Edit > Free Transform to scale and reposition the place, making it fit in the upper right area of the poster. Double-click the text of the layer and name the layer Plane. (imag) Change the Blending Mode of this layer to Multiply. To make the sky and plane blend better, add a Layer Mask to the Clouds layer by clicking the Layer Mask button at the bottom of the layers panel. Select the Brush tool and choose a 125px, soft, round brush, then set the brush opacity to 20%. Make sure the foreground color is set as black and the layer mask is selected. Brush around the plane to hide the edges and the sky around the plane. Changing the opacity of the black or white paint will create a semi-transparent fade of the image. Press the number keys at the top of the keyboard to change from 1 (10%) to 0 (100%) in increments of 10. To resize the brush, press the [ (left bracket) key to make is smaller and the ] (right bracket) to make it bigger. Beverly Houwing Adobe Certified Instructor 1

2 Click the New Layer button at the bottom of the Layers panel to create a new layer. Name the new layer Gradient. Select the Gradient Tool in the Toolbar. Change the foreground color to black, then click the drop down arrow in the Options bar to access the Gradient Presets and select the second gradient which goes from opaque black to transparent. Set the gradient type to Linear. Press the Shift key (to keep the angle of the gradient perfectly vertical) and drag from near the bottom of the image up to the top of the man s head as shown. Change the Blending Mode of the Gradient layer to Soft Light to darken the bottom part of the image. Choose File > Save (Cmd/Ctrl + S) to save the file. With the Gradient layer selected, choose Layer > New > Layer Via Copy (Cmd/Ctrl + J) to duplicate this layer. Change the Opacity to 70% and the Blending Mode to Multiply. The image will appear to fade to nearly black at the bottom but still preserve the color saturation of the image. Select the Type tool in the Toolbar. Click on the middle of the dock just behind the man to set an insertion point for the text. Set the font as Trajan Bold and change the size to 18pt, the alignment to Center and the color to White. Press the Enter/Return key to drop to the next line. Type in PILOT (in all uppercase). Type the (in all lowercase). Click on the Character panel button in the Options bar or choose the Character panel in the Window menu to open it. Select both lines and change the Leading to 54 pt. Select the PILOT text and change the Font Size to 60pt and the Tracking to 240. Move the text to just below the man and with the centered on the dock. Choose File > Save. Choose File > Place Select the Movie Credits.ai file. In the options, make sure the Page option is selected and the Crop To: is the Bounding Box. Choose Edit > Free Transform. Scale the credits to fit within the poster at the bottom by pressing the Shift key while dragging in form the corner. Click in the bounding box bad drag to move the credits so they are centered at the bottom. Press Return/Enter to finishing placing the file. Since this is an Illustrator file, it will be converted to a Smart Object in Photoshop. This will maintain this layer as a vector file. Beverly Houwing Adobe Certified Instructor 2

3 With the Movie Credits layer selected, click the Add a Layer Style button at the bottom of the Layers panel (the fx button). Select Color Overlay from the drop down menu. Click the color swatch to access the color picker. Set the color to: R = 200, G = 180, B = a beige color. Then click the OK button to apply the color change. In the Layer Style dialog box click on the text Outer Glow in the list on the left. This will add a glow and allow adjusting the settings. Change the Opacity to 50% and the color to white. In the Structure settings, set the Technique to Precise, the Spread to 3% and Size to 3px in the Elements settings. Set the Range to 80% in the Quality settings. Choose File > Save. Click on the Type tool in the Toolbar to select it. On the image, click in the upper left area of the poster. Open the Character and Paragraph panels by clicking on the Character and Paragraph panels button on the Options bar or choosing Window > Character or Window > Paragraph. In the Paragraph panel set the alignment of the text to Left aligned. In the Character panel, set the font to Trajan Pro Bold, 18pt size, 24pt Leading and 100 Tracking. Change the color to a dark brown. Type He Sought Adventure. Press the Return/Enter key to drop to the next line, then type And Found His Destiny. Click in the second line of type and change the Indent to 38pt in the Paragraph panel. In the Layers panel, click on the Clouds layer to select it. In the Adjustments panel, click on the Curves button to add a curves adjustment layer. Drag the curve down to darken the overall tone of the image. In the Layers panel, click on the Plane layer to select it. In the Adjustments panel, click on the Levels button to add a levels adjustment layer. Click the Clip Adjustment button at the bottom of the panel so the Levels only effect the Plane layer, and drag the black slider in to about 20 and the white slider in to about 225 to brighten the plane in the image and raise the saturation. Choose File > Save. Choose File > Save As and select JPEG from the options with the maximum quality setting. Choose File > Close to close the Movie Poster.psd file. 4 Movie DVD Case Open the Movie Poster.jpg and dvdbox.psd files. In the Movie Poster.jpg choose Select > All (Cmd/Ctrl + A) to get the marching ants around the entire image. Choose Edit > Copy (Cmd/Ctrl + C) to copy the image to the clip board. Go to the dvdbox.psd file. Click on Layer 0 to select the bottom most layer. Press the Cmd/Ctrl key and click on the mask thumbnail on the Inner Box layer to load a selection of the interior portion of the DVD case. Choose Edit > Paste Special > Paste Into to paste the poster image into the interior of the DVD case. Choose Edit > Free Transform (Cmd/Ctrl + T) to scale the image to fit in the space of the cover. Press the Shift key and drag form the corner of the bounding box inward to scale proportionally. Choose File > Save As and name the file Pilot DVD.psd. Keep the Movie Poster.jpg open. Coffee Mug Open the cup.psd file. Select the Move tool. Click on the image in the Movie Poster.jpg file and drag it up to the tab of the cup.psd file. Wait for the image to switch to the coffee cup image, then drag down into the middle of the image and release the mouse to copy the poster into the file. Choose Edit > Free Transform (Cmd/Ctrl + T) to scale the image to fit the height of the cup. Press the Shift key and drag form the corner of the bounding box inward to scale proportionally to about 30% of its original size. Choose Edit > Transform > Warp. Drag the anchor point and handles on the grid to make the post fit the contour of the cup. Press Return/Enter to apply the transformation. Change the blending mode to Multiply and add a layer mask to paint out and edges that extend to the edge of the cup. Choose File > Save As and name the file PilotCup.psd. 5 T-Shirt Open the Tshirt.jpg file. We will use a Displacement Map of the t-shirt to make the poster art look realistically applied to it. Select Image > Duplicate to make a copy of the t-shirt photo as a separate file. Remove the color from the duplicate image by desaturating it. Select Image > Adjustments > Desaturate. Invert the image so that the dark and light values are reversed. Select Image > Adjustments > Invert. Note: You can use an inverted version of the image or the original grayscale, depending on which will give a better result as a displacement map. Select Filter > Blur > Surface Blur. Enter 5 for Radius & 25 for Threshold. This will remove detail to make the map smoother. Save the duplicate as a Photoshop file. Select File > Save As and name it d-map.psd. Choose File > Close to close this file. Select the Move tool. Click on the image in the Movie Poster.jpg file and drag it up to the tab of the cup.psd file. Wait for the image to switch to the t-shirt image, then drag down into the middle of the image and release the mouse to copy the poster into the file. Select Edit > Free Transform to scale the poster art, so it fits on the front of the shirt. Hold down the Shift key when dragging the corner of the transform box to maintain the proportions of the poster. Rotate the poster slightly by dragging outside the box when you see the curved arrows. Rename this layer Art. Choose Filters > Convert For Smart Filters. This will make the layer a Smart Object, allowing the settings of the filter to displace it to be edited later if necessary. Select Filter > Distort > Displace. Enter 5 for Horizontal Scale & 10 for Vertical Scale. This is because the shirt has more folds going vertically than horizontally. Click OK in the filter dialog box and then when prompted to select a file to use, choose d-map.psd. Apply a Blending Mode to have the displaced poster art interact better with the texture of the shirt. In this case Multiply works very well. Also lower the Opacity of the logo to 95%, so it looks just a bit faded. Select File > Save As and name it Pilot T-shirt.psd. Note: Different Blending Modes will yield varying results depending on the color and luminance of the images superimposed. CD Sound Track Open the CDCoverArt.psd and CD_Case.psd files. In the CD_Case.psd, click the Artwork layer to select it. Go to the CDCoverArt.psd and chose Select > All (Cmd/Ctrl + A) to select the entire image. Choose Edit > Copy (Cmd/Ctrl + C) to copy the image to the clip board. Go to the CD_Case.psd. Beverly Houwing Adobe Certified Instructor 5

6 Choose Filter > Vanishing Point. This will open the file in its own environment in Photoshop. In this file, the CD jewel case already has a perspective grid created on the left side. Note: To create a grid using the Create Plane Tool, clicking on the four corners of the side of the object you wish to have a perspective grid applied to. If a grid is in good perspective it is shown in blue. A grid that may to a little misaligned is shown in yellow. I grid that is out of perspective is shown in red. 2 1 Use the Create Plane Tool (1)to drag a perpendicular plane out from the middle of the CD jewel case spine to extend a grid onto the front cover. Switch to the Edit Plane Tool (2). Press the Option/Alt key and drag the node in middle of the right side of the grid to pivot it, so its angle matches the CD case. Stretch the grid so it covers the front surface of the case. Press Cmd/Ctrl + V to paste the cover artwork into the Vanishing Point filter window. Drag the selected artwork over to the CD case. Once its inside the area of the perspective grid, the cover artwork will snap to it. Move it so it aligns with the back cover, spine and front cover of the CD, leaving a small gap where the case is opened at the hinge. Click OK. Select File > Save As and name it Pilot SoundtrackCD.psd. Location Shot Go to Adobe Bridge Navigate to the folder with the Location Pano Shots. Select all four images. Choose Tools > Photoshop > Photomerge. Note: Photomerge can be selected from within Photoshop. Choose File > Automate > Photomerge Browse to the files you want to combine and select them. 7 In the Photomerge options, make sure Blend Images Together, Vignette Removal & Geometric Distortion Correction options are checked. The Auto Layout option works fine for most panoramas. The four images will be automatically aligned by Photoshop which adjusts the size and shape of the images to register their overlapping areas. Photoshop will also automatically adjust the color of each layer and create Layer Masks to hide the edge seams. The slight distortion and movement in making the four panels merge into one image will leave some gaps around the perimeter, as shown by the transparent areas (checkerboard) along the edges. In the Layers panel menu chose Merge Visible to apply the layer masks and merge all four image segments on to one layer. Click the Magic Wand tool. Set the Tolerance to 15 and make sure Contiguous is not checked. Click anywhere in the transparent area around the image to select that portion of the image that s not filled in. Choose Edit > Fill. From the Use: options, choose Content -Aware. Make sure the Blending Mode is Normal, Opacity is 100% and Preserve Transparency is not checked. Click OK. This image is filled out to the edges by what closely matches it form nearby. Choose Select > Deselect (Cmd/Ctrl + D) to get rid of the marching ants. Fix any small flaws with the Healing Brush or Clone Stamp Tool. Select File > Save As and name it LocationPano.psd. Note: When shooting images to combine into panoramas, use the following tips: Overlap images by 20% Shoot in manual mode so the exposure is consistent Use a tripod to keep images level (or if hand held, try to support the camera to minimize vertical movement from shot to shot Shoot as a focal length of 50mm or greater (never use a wide angle since it will distort the edges too much) Beverly Houwing Adobe Certified Instructor 7
