Journaling Strips (Photoshop) Tip of the Week by Jenny Binder on August 10, 2009 I m willing to make you a bet. Pick out 10 layouts from a scrapbooking magazine any 10 layouts you don t even have to like them. Now look and see how many use little strips of paper to journal on, rather than a big journaling mat. I m willing to bet at LEAST one uses journaling strips, probably more. Journaling strips can add an element of fun and whimsy to a page. And doing them digitally is so much easier than having to literally glue each of those strips on your page! Here is the left half of a two-page layout. As you can see, I ve left an area in the upper, right hand corner for my journaling. I felt like little snippets of what we have done so far this summer would be better for this layout than a paragraph of journaling, so the journaling strips are a perfect addition to this page. Step 1) Add Type * Choose the Horizontal Type tool from the Tool Bar on the left side of your desktop. * On your page, you can either click and drag to create a text box, or just click once and start typing. I ll just click and start typing, putting extra spaces between different events. * Only return once after each line, even though it might look like the words are too close together. We re going to fix that later. Page 1
* Do NOT click the check mark to accept the type when you are done. Just go on to the next step. Step 2) Adjust Type * Press Ctrl A (Mac: Cmd A) to highlight all of the type, as shown below. (If you have first accepted your type by clicking on the check mark, this will not work, but will put a selection around the entire page instead.) * Open the Character Palette (sometimes called the Font or Type Palette.) If you have it docked to your Palette Bin to the right, you can click on the A to open the Character Palette. (see image below) If you do not see the A, choose Window>Character from the Menu Bar to open it. * Adjust the leading by increasing the number in the leading box, which is shown below. I like to do this by highlighting the word Auto (or the number if there is a number already there), then I just press and hold the up arrow key on my keyboard until the leading is increased to my liking. If you need to move the Character Palette around so you can see your type, you can do that by clicking and dragging the empty gray space at the top of the Character Palette. Page 2
* When you are done with your adjustments, click the check mark in the Options bar above to accept your type. Then close the Character Palette by either docking it to the Palette bin, or clicking on the X. * Now my type is ready for the journaling strips. Step 3) Create the Strips * Add a solid, contrasting colored paper to this page, placing it just below the type layer in the layers palette. * Make sure that the paper is under each of the areas where you will want to make a strip. If it is not, move it into place. * Choose the Polygonal Lasso tool from the Tool bar to the left. * Make sure the settings in the Options bar are the same as I have shown here. Page 3
* Start clicking around each word (or phrase) to draw the journaling strip, making sure to complete each strip by returning to the point where you started that strip. * Add more strips until they are all drawn. * Make sure the new solid paper is the active layer in the Layers palette. * Press Ctrl J (Mac: Cmd J) to copy the selected areas from the solid paper and place them on a new layer. (Nothing will appear to have changed, except the selections will disappear, and you might notice a new layer was created in the Layers palette.) * In the Layers palette, drag the solid paper layer to the trash can to delete it. * What should be left is your journaling strips, placed neatly under your journaling. Add a drop shadow, and you re done! (See next page for my completed page.) Page 4
Here s my whole page, which is only half of my 2-page layout, but you can see how it adds a fun feel to the page something different than just a block of journaling. Give it a try, and have a great week! Credits: Tutorial by Jenny Binder, Page credits: sun by Libby Weifenbach, Melty Pops kit; grass by Cori Gammon, Good Day Sunshine kit; butterfly (recolored) by Fee Jardine, Blush kit; paper by Amanda Heimann, Come Out and Play kit. Fonts: CAC Shishoni Brush (there s something about...); Artistamp Medium (SUMMER and 09); and CK True Type (journaling strips type). Leap Frog To The Next Level!
